No petrol

I have to pick up Dd from school ( very close by) then Dh (15 minute drive) from work. His car is in the garage so has been using mine (our other one) he drove to work the last couple of mornings, when he got out of the car, I started to drive home and saw there was literally no petrol in the car, it was on one last bar that means it’s low but ok, that bar has gone now…does this mean zero petrol or enough for me to pick him up (15 min drive) stupidly he has the wallet with cards and cash in (one of those days)
Will I be able to make it to him?

It's hardly unusual for people to fill up then realise (genuinely) they're without any means of payment.

But seeing as 99% of people will have just filled up a vehicle that can be traced to their home address or workplace then garages know that most people will come back and pay.

But to cover themselves they have a form where the details can be recorded and you also sign to confirm that you will pay but if you don't they will call the police.

Icedlatteplease · 01/12/2023 04:59

That is actually theft.

It's also card fraud to let someone else use your card. You should never ever let someone know your pin, especially not someone who thinks it's OK to commit theft rather than find his own way home.

What a gem of a man

araiwa · 01/12/2023 05:17

What are you on about? Theft? Fraud?

User136921 · 01/12/2023 05:53

I filled up once then realised I had forgotten my purse, this was before Apple Pay and stuff like that, I just filled in a form and went back, I think it's not that uncommon, it's a bit embarrassing though. It's only theft if you don't go in and tell them and/or don't go back and pay

KingsleyBorder · 01/12/2023 07:13

Why would he be “stood in the cold outside work” if you didn’t pick him up?

Except he didn't use her cards, just cash. Can't you read?

It's not fraud if you have the card owner's permission.

And theft is defined as the intention to permanently deprive someone of their property.

Not all phones are compatible with apple pay and similar. My bank offers a similar service through their app and one time when I was in hospital I forgot to bring my phone back with me after home leave. I got my partner to read out the long number added the card and then when I came to use it that my phone wasn't compatible and the payment couldn't be processed. Another patient lent me the money for my coffee and I paid her back after my partner brought my purse on the next visiting day

betterangels · 01/12/2023 10:21

He could have walked home. I can't believe the pandering when this situation was his own doing.

Or taxi, bus, lift from a colleague to a bus stop or train station, or to within walking distance.

OP is a huge mug.

KingsleyBorder · 01/12/2023 10:56

And she clearly didn’t call him to discuss possible alternatives, nor did she even try to put a card on her phone. There is no helping some people. For all we know it was just a case of her messaging to say “no petrol in car and you took my wallet you muppet!” and he’d have said “no worries I’ll get a lift with Steve”.

cutcopypastereplace · 01/12/2023 10:59

Er THE wallet????

You are nuts to "share" your purse.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 01/12/2023 14:14

@jc12689, I didn’t actually mean a literal auxiliary tank. I only meant a ‘remaining amount of fuel once the indicator shows empty’. For example, my old car’s ‘fill up!’ warning came on with 50miles of range and a notch on the indicator dial still showing. My husband’s car’s light only comes on when there are no notches on the indicator still showing and there are around 20miles of range. So it varies between cars.

OP, I cannot believe you went ahead with the fuel fill up knowing you couldn’t pay. Did you fill up and then reveal you had no payment method, or did you agree that would you fill up and pay later before you accessed the pumps? Given you mention she was unhappy, I’m guessing you sprang your lack of payment method on the shop assistant after you’d filled up…

Yikerswhatalife · 01/12/2023 14:24

@Valeriekat What??? We’re married with a child, dog, mortgage in both our names, together for 30 years, it’s ok if he needs some change for a coffee and vice versa right? We class all our money as *Our money…just family money really. He earns more but over the years, I have at some point, then he has, then me..etc

KingsleyBorder · 01/12/2023 14:26

So, did you even contact him at work to tell him that you had no money or petrol? after 30 years you should be quite good at communicating with each other, surely?

JenniferJuniper80 · 01/12/2023 14:30

My old Renault would fo 70+ miles on the red!

Shame I don't know your car.

Fill it up.

Yikerswhatalife · 01/12/2023 17:11

@KingsleyBorder Of course I did.

I think people are determined to see this in the worst possible light. I really don't think it's cool to be sending you personal insults about being a mug. If this was a very regular occurrence and was evidently been done out of spite, yes it would be an issue. But I don't see anything more dramatic than that happening.

KingsleyBorder · 02/12/2023 11:37

Yikerswhatalife · 01/12/2023 17:11

@KingsleyBorder Of course I did.

And he said that the best solution was you to do what you did? Really? What a selfish arse.

MrsMarzetti · 02/12/2023 16:55

BoobyDazzler · 30/11/2023 18:27

Can’t you just pay on your phone? Do people really still get their cards out to pay for things?

No, i don't get my card out, i get cash out of my purse.

Yikerswhatalife · 02/12/2023 20:49

@KingsleyBorder He couldn’t get a lift, no public transport nearby, there weren’t many options tbh

Ozanj · 15/08/2024 17:16

In my small car an empty tank gives me 20 miles on an A Road/motorway or 40 miles if I’m pootling along at 20/30.

GasPanic · 15/08/2024 17:28

Check under the sofa for pound coins.

I found £6.50 last time I checked. That should enable you to get enough fuel.
