Do you believe in Mediums?

Some years ago I went (very sceptically) with a friend to see a well renowned Medium. I had waited almost 2 years to see her. I booked the appointment via telephone on a withheld number. I Gave only my first name which isn't unusual and no other information.
As I say, I was a very sceptical and pretty much a non- beleiver, but just went along with a friend to see what it was all about and a giggle. I had previously lost my husband quite young in a very unusual way. The woman seemed to know a lot about this and even specified that it was abroad, an accident and he was surrounded by water, which he was 🤯 she then went on to say he was with her and was trying to tell her a nickname he used to call me so that I would believe he was there. I was completely confused as I couldn't remember any nicknames that he had for me (non to my knowledge). So this is where I had her, or so I thought! I said no, there has never been a nickname. He never called me anything other than my Christian name. She then said she would give me the first letter of the nickname. I just looked at her blankly and said no. She then shot out the nickname and I was completely and utterly blindsided. It was a ridiculous name. I won't say it on here because it's embarrassing and silly 🤣 but it's something in humour that he used to call me when it was just the two of us (and very unusual/not guessable for her AT ALL). I had totally and utterly forgotten about it. So how could she have known this if even I had forgotten and absolutely nobody else knew? I've never to this day been able to understand how she could know. She also went on to say several other things were that were outstandingly accurate and things that nobody else could possibly have known, for example I was in the middle of a private dental claim which she said was legal (I was) and that I would receive a substantial payout very soon (I did). She told my friend she was pregnant (she was, 6 weeks, but had told nobody bar her DH) This one visit to this Medium changed my entire belief system regarding mediums and the spirit world which I never thought would be possible. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

No, I don't believe in them.

Beamur · 30/11/2023 14:15

A medium told my friend that she wouldn't get the cancer that killed her Mum and neither would her sisters. 2 out of 3 sisters have since had cancer.
It's cynical hokum.

LubaLuca · 30/11/2023 14:16

No, I don't believe they have any paranormal gift. Some are skilled con artists, some are genuinely deluded.

Allfur · 30/11/2023 14:16

I prefer a happy one

CurlewKate · 30/11/2023 14:18

Read/watch Derren Brown on cold reading. He explains how all this stuff is done. Do you have a recording of your session, BTW?

Thedogscollar · 30/11/2023 14:19

@Beamur that is shocking. Considering 1:2 of us will get cancer in our lives she couldn't possibly know this and that is very dangerous information to give out.
Fwiw I don't believe them I think they are skilled con artists.

Snowballs138 · 30/11/2023 14:19

I understand and respect a lot don't believe in them - I didn't- but how do I explain how she knew the private nickname my DH had for me?

This

Beamur · 30/11/2023 14:21

OP, it's up to you what you believe. Personally I think nothing good can come from mediums. Live in the now and the real world.

ShowOfHands · 30/11/2023 14:21

I've a friend who claims the same as you. Extraordinary detail, couldn't have known, truly amazing, gobsmacked etc.

I was there. It was cold reading and my friend gave her every bit of information through her reactions and confirmations. There was nothing supernatural about it. It is embellished with each retelling.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 30/11/2023 14:21

No it's a load of bobbins

TrumpetOfTheMatriarchy · 30/11/2023 14:22

I used to, sadly it's more XL these days.

ChipOffTheOldBloch · 30/11/2023 14:22

Some are deluded, some are off their trollies, and some are skilled con artists. None have ever or would ever stand up to "blind" testing for paranormal ability.

Thepeopleversuswork · 30/11/2023 14:27

No. Most of them are chancers, a few of them are nutbags who have convinced themselves of what they believe. It's a load of bollocks.

CurlewKate · 30/11/2023 14:27

@ShowOfHands " I understand and respect a lot don't believe in them - I didn't- but how do I explain how she knew the private nickname my DH had for me?"

Nobody can answer that because we weren't there. We don't know what clues you unconsciously gave. Or whether your memory is not as accurate as you think it is. Or whether the medium was primed. We don't know. But honestly-she didn't know.

I think I will be in a clear minority here, but, yes; I believe and have had a similar experience. The woman I spoke with told me which exact tune had been played at my Fathers graveside at his funeral; The occasion was attended by just 4 people and was in 2004. No one bar me is still alive. She also told me who played it (it was a trombone solo, odd though that sounds) and how much my Father had appreciated it!

She gave me so much other information, and was very exact on names, although not with dates, but none of the 'do you know anyone whose name begins with XYZ?' :) She also gave me alot to (almost) laugh about and told me some funny but long forgotten incidents about my late parents which absolutely cheered me up!

She was great and very comforting which is why I went and I haven't been since. Her charge was 30 pounds for a sitting that went on for about 90 minutes, about 7 years ago, and like you I waited a good 9 months to see her. So yes, I 'buy' it.

Verv · 30/11/2023 14:36

No, but I have had one say something to me that was weirdly specific once.
I hadn't visited her or gone looking, she was at a colleagues house for a girls night in.
The thing she said, nobody else knew.

FinallyFinalGirl · 30/11/2023 14:38

I'm sorry for your loss, OP.Flowers

Mediums are scammers. And IF (big if) there are some who know all kinds of impossible things, then I think they have invoked some kind of demonic shit.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 30/11/2023 14:38

No. At best I think they have good intuition or good cold reading skills. V. uncomfortable about how they exploit the bereaved, though.

boudiccathecat · 30/11/2023 14:40

I was in a medium meeting, the subject gave the medium all the information. And then it was mirrored back to her. TBH it was like a counselling session. So I think it has its place. But not for me.

MalcolmTuckersSwearBox · 30/11/2023 14:41

No, I think they are exploitative shysters who should be taken to task.

usernother · 30/11/2023 14:43

No, of course not. Money grabbing charlatans.

Beginningless · 30/11/2023 14:44

I think many are scammers, but there are many things in this world we can’t explain. I’d far rather be open minded to things I didn’t believe possible than sneer at other’s experiences. Not saying everyone is doing this here but it’s the general response on threads like this.

SisterMichaelsHabit · 30/11/2023 14:46

How did you pay? They probably got your name off your credit card and they'd need the billing address as well.
A "renowned" anyone wouldn't take a booking in the way you've described with no other info and a promise to pay them in 2 years' time. 🤣
