Do you believe in Mediums?

Some years ago I went (very sceptically) with a friend to see a well renowned Medium. I had waited almost 2 years to see her. I booked the appointment via telephone on a withheld number. I Gave only my first name which isn't unusual and no other information.
As I say, I was a very sceptical and pretty much a non- beleiver, but just went along with a friend to see what it was all about and a giggle. I had previously lost my husband quite young in a very unusual way. The woman seemed to know a lot about this and even specified that it was abroad, an accident and he was surrounded by water, which he was 🤯 she then went on to say he was with her and was trying to tell her a nickname he used to call me so that I would believe he was there. I was completely confused as I couldn't remember any nicknames that he had for me (non to my knowledge). So this is where I had her, or so I thought! I said no, there has never been a nickname. He never called me anything other than my Christian name. She then said she would give me the first letter of the nickname. I just looked at her blankly and said no. She then shot out the nickname and I was completely and utterly blindsided. It was a ridiculous name. I won't say it on here because it's embarrassing and silly 🤣 but it's something in humour that he used to call me when it was just the two of us (and very unusual/not guessable for her AT ALL). I had totally and utterly forgotten about it. So how could she have known this if even I had forgotten and absolutely nobody else knew? I've never to this day been able to understand how she could know. She also went on to say several other things were that were outstandingly accurate and things that nobody else could possibly have known, for example I was in the middle of a private dental claim which she said was legal (I was) and that I would receive a substantial payout very soon (I did). She told my friend she was pregnant (she was, 6 weeks, but had told nobody bar her DH) This one visit to this Medium changed my entire belief system regarding mediums and the spirit world which I never thought would be possible. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I've had a lot of readings but only one was spot on. She even knew that one of my sandals had snapped that morning (I wasn't wearing the broken pair) and said I had flowers coming later that day (a friend dropped off a tray of bedding plants that evening, unprompted and no, she didn't know I was seeing that medium who lived 30 miles away).

The reading was recorded and I listened to it a year later and everything was correct.

I've not had a reading since.

'She then said she would give me the first letter of the nickname. I just looked at her blankly and said no.'

Ask yourself why she would suggest only the first letter?

She was buying time and gauging your reaction.

Your body language and facial expression would have been open for her to read.

Pet nicknames between husband and wife are common and often based on appearance so without being rude to you, she may have guessed it was ' Chubby cheeks' or 'Miss Piggy' etc.

Elphame · 30/11/2023 15:36

Many are frauds I agree but I've known a couple who are genuine.

You won't change the minds of any of the posters who don't believe though. Sadly their minds are too closed.

LBFseBrom · 30/11/2023 15:39

I most certainly do not believe in them and think they are clever charlatans, dangerous and exploit vulnerable people.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 30/11/2023 15:40

Went to a pretty famous medium, who used to visit a well known princess. Everything she told me was utter crap, and in fact the opposite of everything she said happened, complete waste of money and my time.

LubaLuca · 30/11/2023 14:16

No, I don't believe they have any paranormal gift. Some are skilled con artists, some are genuinely deluded.

Definitely this. It is also cruel.

Hijinks75 · 30/11/2023 15:41

DW definitely does, I definitely don’t, one told my mum she would live to see three grandchildren, she died early this year, 12 grandchildren, 9 great and one great great, not exactly accurate

Sparthan · 30/11/2023 15:42

I’m a Medium. Except in Uniqlo I’m a Large.

SwankyPants · 30/11/2023 15:42

Yes I do. I had an amazing reading years ago where things discussed have come true. That was recorded.
I've had others since that were less detailed but still talked about stuff that was accurate. Not stuff that could be gained by reactions. I do think there are people out there that take advantage of people and are rubbish but also that some have a gift.

The closed minds are the ones who refuse to consider the non paranormal explanations for things. An open mind considers all eventualities and chooses the most likely one. A closed mind says "Oh yes, obviously paranormal" despite evidence to the contrary.

Dotjones · 30/11/2023 15:45

I think many, probably the vast majority, are scammers. People who are good at picking up on signs and planting false memories. Some are dedicated to the extent of creating fake profiles on social media to track down information on audience members in advance, some are just bullshitting and blagging.

There are undoubtedly some who genuinely believe they have a gift and they are conversing through a spirit guide for example. They may or may not be genuine, maybe they've conned themselves.

If a medium can genuinely find out information that they couldn't possibly know, they'd be able to do things like tell the exact order a shuffled, independently provided deck of cards is in. Usually they just give out information that is knowable, no matter how unlikely it might seem they themselves should know it. A nickname falls into that category. People have known it, so it can be known to people.

cerisepanther73 · 30/11/2023 15:49

Hi @Snowballs138

Can you pm me to let me know who this medium is,?
as i would love ❤️ to arrange an appointment with them too.

Thanks

Lou197 · 30/11/2023 15:51

I had my tarot cards read a few times when I was going through a very difficult time. The lady who did the reading was lovely and spent ages with me for a very small payment (around £10 for 2 hours) - everything she said was true or came true, was very reassuring at the time.

Bollox, my mind is very open. That sort of argument is used to shut down those who accuse these people of scamming the vulnerable.

We only really booked it as a bit of fun and I'd never seen one and was open minded (albeit sceptical)
The nickname my DH had was beyond anything anyone could really guess- very obscure - and so this is what has always baffled me.

Like most on here I firmly believe all mediums are skilled con artists, some a lot better than others.

If you agree to see one, even for a ' laugh' , they have the advantage and upper hand, because nobody really goes as it's a ' bit of fun'..you go because deep down you want something from it.

Taking the nickname thing ..you are obvioulsy not supposed to be able to work out how they knew it, but I am fairly confident someone like Derren Brown could unpick that if they saw a recording of the session, and give you the nick name as well.

Mediums are now skilled at two things: Searching online for background information on you, even if you swear blind you have no online presence, and reading your body language, including they way you speak, what you are wearing - jewellery or not - what colour clothes you are wearing, style of shoes, style of hair, amount and choice of make up etc all go into their profiling.

'Mediums' do not have other worldly powers; they are just excellent confidence tricksters, and that is really all there is to it.

Vegetus · 30/11/2023 16:04

The James Randi foundation offers a million dollars to anyone able to prove their abilities, many have tried and every single one has failed.

Hocus pocus bullshit

You had new sandals on and maybe you were touching them as they rubbed. They didn't exactly match your outfit perhaps? - the guess is then you quickly chose another pair as something had happened to your old ones and you hadn't got time to change. If it was incorrect you wouldn't have remembered it.

Lot's of people who visit mediums do it to coincide with an anniversary - not a long shot to suggest someone might be sending you flowers, and it isn't such a hugely unusual thing to happen anyway. depending on the season it might have been a good guess to suggest you would be getting bedding plants at some stage..your complexion might be that of someone who spends time in the garden..she might even know that about you anyway.

Ittastesvile · 30/11/2023 16:06

I saw a show with a guy similar to Derren Brown. He told people loads of stuff that "he couldn't possibly have known". It was very impressive, and he was obviously skilled, but no spirits were required to do it.

I also have a few friends who are not mediums, but have a history of "knowing" when other people are pregnant or ill before they know themselves.

I am open to there being some real mediums, but on the whole no I don't believe in them.

SharSharBinks · 30/11/2023 16:07

It's utter nonsense IMO.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 30/11/2023 16:09

Using critical thinking doesn’t mean you have a closed mind.

ginasevern · 30/11/2023 16:10

I've been to several "fortune tellers" over the years, mostly when I was young in end of the pier or fairground type scenarios and they were all rubbish. Except in 2013 I went to a reasonably well known medium. She was so accurate about the next 18 months of my life that it actually scared me rigid when her predictions came to fruition. So much so that I will never, ever visit one again. I will never again engage with the unknown in that way.

seenisambol · 30/11/2023 16:10

I've known two of my friends had recently found out they were pregnant within the first 30 seconds of seeing them. One just by watching her get out of her car. I don't know how - I must have picked up on the way she was carrying herself differently. I think we're totally unaware of how many signals we're giving off and how people are able to tune into them.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/11/2023 16:15

None of us can say how she found out the information, but she clearly did. That's what they do. However unlikely you find any of the methods she could have used to find out, they are still way more likely than the existence of psychic powers. For starters, anyone who had genuine psychic powers would be fabulously wealthy, wouldn't they? Because they'd be able to make a fortune on the stock market etc. They are con artists. Some of them are very good at it. And if she was 'renowned', she's no doubt a better con artist than most.

collectspples · 30/11/2023 16:16

MixedCouple · 30/11/2023 15:23

Yes there are legitimate ones who do have some contact with the devils to aquire such information . They do some pretty messed up stuff in order to obtain SOME information. But it is 1 part truth and 10 lies. But majority are fakes.

This is mental.

Listeningtogold · 30/11/2023 16:17

Not me but our DD saw a psychic at the beginning of november.
We were on holiday in the canaries.
He asked her to think of a name of a loved one who had passed.
DD thought of her dog who died the same day as my mum was buried.
He gave the dogs name and described my mum and gave her name.
Mums named is Italian but non of us are. (named after her dad's favourite teacher)
He also told dd that I was ill but it was nothing serious.
While in the canaries I was ill but hadn't told our family as it wasn't serious.
DD hadn't booked the session it was through a work outing and it was all paid cash.
