Do you believe in Mediums?

Snowballs138 · 30/11/2023 14:11

Some years ago I went (very sceptically) with a friend to see a well renowned Medium. I had waited almost 2 years to see her. I booked the appointment via telephone on a withheld number. I Gave only my first name which isn't unusual and no other information.
As I say, I was a very sceptical and pretty much a non- beleiver, but just went along with a friend to see what it was all about and a giggle. I had previously lost my husband quite young in a very unusual way. The woman seemed to know a lot about this and even specified that it was abroad, an accident and he was surrounded by water, which he was 🤯 she then went on to say he was with her and was trying to tell her a nickname he used to call me so that I would believe he was there. I was completely confused as I couldn't remember any nicknames that he had for me (non to my knowledge). So this is where I had her, or so I thought! I said no, there has never been a nickname. He never called me anything other than my Christian name. She then said she would give me the first letter of the nickname. I just looked at her blankly and said no. She then shot out the nickname and I was completely and utterly blindsided. It was a ridiculous name. I won't say it on here because it's embarrassing and silly 🤣 but it's something in humour that he used to call me when it was just the two of us (and very unusual/not guessable for her AT ALL). I had totally and utterly forgotten about it. So how could she have known this if even I had forgotten and absolutely nobody else knew? I've never to this day been able to understand how she could know. She also went on to say several other things were that were outstandingly accurate and things that nobody else could possibly have known, for example I was in the middle of a private dental claim which she said was legal (I was) and that I would receive a substantial payout very soon (I did). She told my friend she was pregnant (she was, 6 weeks, but had told nobody bar her DH) This one visit to this Medium changed my entire belief system regarding mediums and the spirit world which I never thought would be possible. Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Yes - I've had an extremely accurate reading where my grandad and mother came through. She described my oldest and youngest sons to a tee, knew it was my birthday in the next week plus some extremely specific memories. I also booked on a withheld number. My dh (does not believe AT ALL) says she must have seen my Facebook but I can't see how - she didn't have my name or number. It gave me enormous comfort either way so I was so glad I saw her.

Busydayahead · 30/11/2023 18:37

Yes, I believe. I was someone who was very sceptical but I was recommended a medium by a friend.
Still to this day I am blow away by our meeting.
I was going through such pain and heartache due to losing my baby boy.
I don't know what I expected, I just wanted to stop hurting for a little while.
The lady knew how my baby died due to an infection and everything that lead to his death. She told me I was pregnant and I was adamant I wasn't. She told me I would be due in August and would be another boy. She told me things, no-one knew unless you were me or my DH.
I was told how my DFIL died and it was sudden. Many other things we discussed and she was 100%. I don't know how she knew as I wasn't on any social media, my friend who also had a meeting with her didn't know some of the things I had been through in my life. Also, she never charged much money at all. 2 hours I was with her and I came away feeling peaceful.

Busydayahead · 30/11/2023 18:38

I forgot to add. I did have another baby boy in August. I would of been around 4 weeks pregnant and definitely not showing.

MargaritaThyme · 30/11/2023 18:42

Of course not. 🙄

Mostly because I’m not a complete moron, but also because they are not a harmless part of show business. They are cynical charlatans who prey on the stupid, the gullible, the suggestible & the bereaved.

MartyMcFlysPurpleUnderwear · 30/11/2023 18:42

Anyone remember Sylvia Browne? She told Amanda Berry’s mother that her daughter was dead and in water. That poor woman stopped searching for her missing daughter that day and died believing Amanda was dead.

It turned out that Amanda wasn’t dead and was in fact being held against her will along with two other women.

Mediums, psychics, fortune tellers…all just con artists.

She must have seen my Facebook but I don't see how

She can run your face through facial recognition. Probably loads of people look like you. But the one with a Grimsby Facebook page is probably you if you're doing the reading in Grimsby.

"But my Facebook is private!" For someone who knows what they're doing it's like locking a door - but burglars always find a way in.

In Chinese universities there was a big noise about cheating in exams using tiny earpieces glued inside the ear. A camera on a button or something to also see the exam paper then someone on the outside googling and feeding them answers.

If a student can manage that why not someone who could gain thousands of pounds from it?

Internet would show you're bereaved. Would show your children. Your birthday is easy.

Onelifeonly · 30/11/2023 18:45

Listen to Fake Psychic on BBC Sounds. It's all a con. Of course dead people don't communicate - they're dead. If it was possible I'm sure a few murder victims would have let someone know about who killed them and how.

She either did background checks on you or used techniques to prompt you into giving her clues. Probably the former.

'She then said she would give me the first letter of the nickname. I just looked at her blankly and said no.'

Ask yourself why she would suggest only the first letter?

She was buying time and gauging your reaction.

Your body language and facial expression would have been open for her to read.

Pet nicknames between husband and wife are common and often based on appearance so without being rude to you, she may have guessed it was ' Chubby cheeks' or 'Miss Piggy' etc.

Yeah and, of course, all the things she guessed wrong will have been totally forgotten and only the astonishing bits remembered. The fact she had to ask about nicknames and try for a first letter says it all. As though a dead relative wanting to prove his was in the room would say "Ooooh give her a first letter.". He'd come out with 20 facts, all correct and no preamble.

Cold reading works, it's all over youtube and it isn't supernatural.

(This post was dictated to me by an Elderly Gentleman in the spirit world who's name begins with J."

If she tells everyone it's their birthday next week she's going to be spot on one in 52 times. And that will be remembered and the other 51 people will forget. Except some people will say "Oh it's the week after that or or last week, that's good enough." and suddenly you're at 1 in 17.

I have something that is sort of the other way round:
Years ago, I agreed to be a “fortune teller” at a village fund raising fete. (This was my friend's village, not mine, so no one knew me)
My friend was taking the money and ushering the clients in to my dim, dressed up tent. She would whisper things like “divorced, two kids” and leave me to it.
I was a complete fake and it was easy to go on from there.
They all went out saying “isn't she good”, etc.
However after a while my friend got bored and buggered off to the beer tent, leaving me absolutely stranded.
So I began telling them the first things that came into my head, no matter how outlandish, as I thought it would at least be entertainment value, even if I said someone's uncle had been a circus acrobat, or whatever.
I got hit after hit and they still carried on telling the waiting queue how good it was.
It was a laugh and also very strange.

It’s not really. Look up ‘Barnum statements’. Also, most people are very readable — their self-presentation, posture, clothes, hands, voice, accent, vocabulary will tell anyone of reasonable perceptiveness a lot.

Also, the type of people who would go to a fortune teller or a ‘psychic’ are very much a particular demographic. Not hard to make accurate guesses.

YouJustDoYou · 30/11/2023 18:59

No. I gave up with them. I've been to quite a few over the decades and not one ever got anything right. It was so crushing. I can't keep putting myself through that disappointment.

Coffeeandacatchup · 30/11/2023 15:30

I visited a medium many years ago. As the session was coming to the end, she said "This isn't something I usually do but the person coming forward is very persistent and needs you to pass a message on. He is saying that the message is for someone that sits near to you at work". She then proceeded to give me a name and details of his passing along with the message.

There was nothing to link me to this colleague or the person that had passed. I tracked down the person that the message was intended for and passed it on - treading carefully as I did not know how it would be taken. I have never seen the colour drain from someones face so quickly. They believed in what I said as the details given were accurate.

From the dead persons POV why did you need to be involved in this? Couldn't the dead person have just given the medium the details and the medium contacted them direct?

Nodancingshoes · 30/11/2023 19:09

@LylaLee
Hmm maybe...however if she did manage to hack my Facebook, my most recent post was a birthday memory for my dad who I lost as a child and she never mentioned him at all. Who knows - I hope there is some truth in our loved ones still being around

Or the dead person could have gone to the colleague’s house, switched the lights on and off, distracted the family dog, and played significant songs on the radio while dropping white feathers in the garden, which seem to be common ‘woo’ activities engaged in by the Mn dead.

Doggymummar · 30/11/2023 19:11

No it's complete rubbish

CountryStore · 30/11/2023 19:26

I think it's complete bollocks. I can't remember where I read it, but it was about a woman who worked as a medium and she thought herself to be genuine - until she heard about cold reading and realised that she was a natural at it, so good that she hadn't previously realised that was what she was doing

CountryStore · 30/11/2023 19:29

I've also known someone to have been told some that their dead partner is thinking about them and watching over them, and the living partner then saying 'I want to go and join him' and it really does make me very angry at some of these people, especially as I know a particular one to be a proven liar about many other non-supernatural matters.

LowbrowVictoriana · 30/11/2023 19:35

I have no idea what you mean.🤔 😉

Of course so-called mediums are fake. On this thread alone they are credited with: seeing into the future, seeing into the past, and communicating with the dead. Christ on a bike, how is any of that possible? At what point does critical thinking and common sense kick in to say er... nah. It's kind of depressing that sensible educated adults can give any credence to these scammers.

There has also been mention of tarot cards on here. Tarot is a GAME; it's a variety of playing cards. There's nothing supernatural about it. I have several decks and they're beautiful and an enjoyable tool for reflection.
Woo they ain't.

Isseywith3witchycats · 30/11/2023 19:41

ive met a few who definitely got it wrong notably at spiritualist church she saw me with red hair, nickname issey so really isabel, picked me out as having a scottish connection lol the went on to describe my grandmother haha total opposite of her,

but i did meet one lady under weird circumstances and no way could she have done any research on me, in a crowd watching some filming going on round the corner from work and she said did i mind if she spoke to me, named someone whos funeral i was going to a couple of days later no i wasnt dressed in black as he was a biker in our social circle not someone close to me and a few other things she said were very true,

i have a friend who is like me picks up things in the atmosphere good vibes or bad but no i dont speak to the dead, we have known each other a short time but the first time i met i knew i had known her in a previous life as i felt like we really knew each other some may scoff but i have picked up things i couldnt possibly know from life experience

Not to accuse OP but I have a theory these threads are commonly a way of getting people intrigued= making money. A poster above has already asked for a private DM with details of a medium

This truthfully isn't why I posted. I just wondered if anyone else had ever had a similar experience to me. I don't tell many people IRL about my visit, because obviously I'm correct from the many responses on here - people will think I'm bonkers!
I'm not saying I do believe or I don't, I'm on the fence, but I have never been able to explain how she could have known so many very personal accurate details of my life. Genuinely just wondered if anyone else had experience of this. Sorry if I've caused concern for anyone by my post.

Familiar medium tropes…
I sense a change of circumstances…
I see a man in suit
I see a man in uniform
I sense a female presence
I see the initials P or M
I see flowers
Is there a brother?
There is something that wasn’t spoken about…
They’re telling me you feel guilt…
I sense there is unhappiness around a big decision…

All great prompts for you to feed them with all the information they need for them to appear so ‘accurate’.

It’s a manipulative scam.
