Shared by an elderly friend of my mum’s on Facebook. I find it offensive but I’m debating whether it’s worth the hassle of saying so.

It’s certainly not kind, it’s condescending and misogynistic. I’ve known her my whole life and I’ve never seen her be unkind before, actually she did my mum a great kindness many years ago, so I’m not looking to be confrontational or mean.

I just think shit like this being unchallenged makes the world a little bit worse off every day.

I mean I don’t think it’s very pleasant for anyone - man or woman - to wear those kind of shorts in public, even if someone has an ‘amazing’ figure it’s not pleasant to look at in plain public, I’m not against shorts but I don’t want to see anyone’s bum cheeks hanging out when I’m doing my everyday business in public, although I don’t think that’s what the post was trying to get at…

It's highly offensive but I really don't think there's anything to be gained by challenging an elderly woman on Facebook.

@WOtnow I’m guessing that I’m older than the woman posting the text. It’s very lazy (at best) to suggest that she’s a “product of her time” showing no understanding of the awareness and struggle that women my age lived through in the 50’s onwards. Educate yourself woman.

ManateeFair · 29/11/2023 16:12

Obviously it's a pile of old bullshit but you will achieve nothing at all by commenting. If she saw a problem with it, she wouldn't have shared it, and she's not suddenly going to be enlightened by you giving her a telling off on Facebook.

If it was one of your own friends who had posted it, fine, say something and have an argument about it. But an elderly woman who's a friend of your mum's? Really not worth the hassle. Just mute her.

TinkerTiger · 29/11/2023 16:12

You won't change her mind

blacksax · 29/11/2023 16:13

Well if that doesn't objectify a woman's body I don't know what does.

Laughing at your update OP and have to share a similar story. About 3 years ago I was staying at a distant relatives up in the Lake District and had just come back from a long holiday. We stayed a week and I discovered a nasty undertone about "forriners" around the dinner table, brushed it off. Couple of mentions of the country "going to the dogs since they've taken all the work", brushed it off with a raised eyebrow. Got home and a day later had a long message from the hostess informing me that she had to BURN MY MATTRESS because it had BEDBUGS in it and it's the only way to eliminate them. Long ramble about how I must have bought them back because I've been abroad and "like refugees" Confused Apparently the UK has never had bedbugs until the boats started crossing over to Kent. She knows I like immigrants because I gave old clothes to a charity. Now her husband was most distressed as it was a new mattress and she wanted the money back for it immediately. She feared they might be in the carpet and making their way through the house! Huge paragraphs about how sorry she was to tell me I was infected with them and that they probably were hiding in my suitcase... I've never laughed as much as when I imagine my face reading this Confused after the initial shock went. I took that point to remind her than before I stayed she had had a French family to stay, I had not ever been bitten, certainly don't have them at home or in my suitcase and I feared she may have just ruined her lawn by burning a perfectly good mattress. We've not spoken since.
Some people are just completely batshit.

CoffeeCantata · 29/11/2023 16:14

I can't read the text, so I can't comment really.

But I do find those short shorts offensive. I don't want to see her butt cheeks.

I'd just roll my eyes and move on. My mil put a post on fb calling young people today snowflakes....a week after my teen dd tried to take her life. She just literally doesn't think at all. Tbh she wouldn't think she's done anything wrong.

The whole snowflake thing came about from people saying how everyone is unique and special in their own way like a snowflake and idiots said, "Not in my world!" When the idea of having an independent thought or personality is mocked and reviled, how would she know she'd done anything wrong? Nobody has told her to think that yet!

It's the most accurate translation of the Song of Solomon.

I think it's a Fight Club reference. "You are not a unique and beautiful snowflake."

@CoffeeCantata Luckily both your eyes and head move so you can look away.

notmorezoom · 29/11/2023 16:19

I'd be tempted to just do a laugh response and leave it at that!

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 29/11/2023 16:20

I couldn't be bothered to be bothered by it to be honest.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 29/11/2023 16:23

It’s fucking awful. I’m not sure where you’d begin with challenging it though.

SnowFir · 29/11/2023 16:23

You could pretend you thought she took the photo and write "Did the lady mind you taking a photo of her bottom?"

Why are YOU offended about what I do with MY body? Stop looking at it.

Superduper02 · 29/11/2023 16:33

You will be the bully if you pick on someone for expressing their own thoughts or sharing other opinions they agree with.
You don't agree - big whoop! Just leave it alone. A person can be good and have conservative values towards female dress. This modern notion that everyone must be Liberal in order to be kind or nice is so tiring.

Everanewbie · 29/11/2023 16:36

I think YABU to find it offensive, its just stupid shite on the internet with an underlying philosophy that you disagree with (me too for what its worth). Chuckle to yourself about how daft they are and how old fashioned and unconsciously misogynistic they are, and don't give it another thought.

@Sunandnomoon Purely out of interest, does this person ever post quotes from Tom Hardy or Cillian Murphy sort of looking moody and pensive and gazing into the middle distance, where the quote is some crap about only having a few friends, but if you screw me I'll make your life hell i.e. nothing to do with Cillian Murphy or Tom Hardy, anything they or their characters in Peaky Blinders or anything else have ever said?

AhBiscuits · 29/11/2023 16:37

If you argue with all the offensive shit you see on FB you won't get much else done.

Have you ever checked in the mirror, though?
