I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

Just go somewhere that doesn’t allow dogs.
Non issue.

My mother (who actually loves dogs and would be trying to make a fuss of any and all dogs in coffee shops) was complaining to me today that someone took a chihuahua into the GP surgery waiting room - apparently it was barking at everything, so doesn’t sound like it was an assistance dog. Now that really is an inappropriate place to take a pet.

Edited

Assistance dogs bark! My friends assistance dogs was trained to bark when her blood sugars were low. I also know of an assistance dog who was trained to bark when his owner was starting to get anxious.
And assistance dogs can come in all shapes and sizes.

Love to.

And when there’s a dog in the one dog-free section of the only cafe within 10 miles that refuses to move when asked, what then?

I genuinely didn’t know that! Thanks for the information.

It absolutely wouldn't be an assistance dog of any kind, they are trained to be neutral to their environment when working.

No problem, it's a misconception a lot of people have. But it's the only real way a dog can communicate with people other than their owners.
In the anxiety case it meant people generally moved away giving the person more space.
In the blood sugar case it was a rhythmic bark that told my friend to check her sugar levels.
Anxiety dog was big strong staffy because his owner was big built and the dog needed to be able to overpower him if he needed dragging from a situation to a safe space, the blood sugar dog was done sort of tiny fluff ball poodle looking thing (I'm a cat person can you tell 🤣)

Some dogs are trained to bark in certain situations! Not all assistance dogs are hearing and guide dogs

Fair point that I forgot to consider, yes, some dogs are trained to alert bark.

But there are some people who use the excuse of their pet dog being small as an excuse to take them everywhere.

There's a woman here who regularly stuffs their sickly looking 'teacup' dog down the front of their baggy hoodie to take it in the supermarket, I've seen her shove the poor thing's head back down when it tries to escape.

I agree Op. I’ve been trying to book a cottage for next summer this weekend, all 3 of the ones I really like are ‘dog friendly and welcome up to 3 dogs’. No thanks, I don’t want to pay £1500 to stay somewhere dogs have been sleeping on all the furniture for the previous 2 weeks (and longer).

After going to a cottage once that reeked of wet dog and had multiple glade plug inside to try and fail to mitigate the smell we now try to find pet free places. (I'm not a dog hater but the smell was very strong and off putting) They are pretty difficult to find, and often more expensive as well.
I'm fine with a dog or 2 in a pub or cafe if they are not bothering anyone else but not keen on barking or jumpy (or friendly) dogs.

And as I said previously I wasn't expecting to see dogs at the opticians, and wonder where else they might turn up unexpectedly!
Someone in an office down the corridor from my workplace brings their dogs to work. They go berserk every time anyone knocks at the their door (or the entrance to the corridor) ....which is fairly frequently throughout the day. They are quite cute but it's more peaceful when they aren't there!

THIS

WadiShab · 27/11/2023 14:23

You are right they don't consent neither do they consent to being dragged around everyone YOU feel like going.

70% of people do not consent to dogs inside eateries either.

It's that old love me love my dog attitude.

Yes the concept of marrying a dog IS ridiculous because animals and humans cannot be considered the same therefore just because a person can go to a resturant or coffee shop and eat inside that doesn't mean it's appropriate for their dog to be inside. I'm fine with them being allowed when there is outside seating and kept under control and not sniffing and the next person's desert on the next table.

LadyMary50 · 27/11/2023 14:34

Coffee shops and eateries are for humans as they serve human food.I am a dog lover but have never taken my dog into a coffee shop as I like to relax while there.I think it’s ridiculous the amount of places that now allow dogs.Dogs enjoy running around green spaces not sitting under a bloody table.Plus dogs can get very unsettled in crowded situations it’s not fair on them.

No. 70 % of this forum, which is a small sample of people likely to have similar characteristics. Not statistically relevant at all.

Its not a matter of consenting to anything. We are talking about places where dogs are already welcomed by the proprietors.

And it’s also not an attitude at all. My dog is actively welcomed into some establishments, where sometimes I take her and she clearly loves it. If she didn’t like it,I wouldn’t take her. I don’t expect anyone else to love her - they mostly do, but I don’t push her on people.

LadyMary50 · 27/11/2023 14:40

Elastica23 · 27/11/2023 13:31

The dog haters need to get over it or stay indoors as dog friendly places are proliferating.

Why should I a human who actually enjoys a cup of coffee have to stay home because a dog who doesn’t drink coffee is allowed. It’s madness, dogs don’t drink coffee neither do they eat chocolate cake..

Catwench · 27/11/2023 14:42

As a person that is petrified of dogs I avoid places that allow dogs inside. People also have allergies, and I’m not convinced it’s hygienic. I’m rather fed up of pubs and places allowing them in as I don’t want to sit next to someone’s dog. Dog lovers seem to have the expectation that you will like their dog, want to fuss them, want them to jump up you in the park etc. it’s about time it changed. I don’t expect people to like my cats, don’t expect me to like your dog.

Because the cafe owner has decided they are happy to have dogs. They are choosing to allow dogs.

I honestly don’t get why this is so difficult for posters to understand…

greencheetah · 27/11/2023 14:46

There is obviously a huge overlap in the Venn diagram showing “dog lovers “ and “people who want to own hospitality venues” as well as the clear financial benefits for those businesses in admitting dogs.

fruitstick · 27/11/2023 14:48

It depends on the venue surely.

I take my dog into cafes and pubs that are part of my dog walk.

I rarely take him into town or cafes there because what dog wants to go shopping?

But if it's a rural cafe and people are out for a walk, no they don't want to leave their dogs at home.

Livelifelaughter · 27/11/2023 14:57

Shittyflute · 27/11/2023 13:01

I have never seen a dog poo or wee and mine has not ever.

Based upon on your poll of ... er, one, I'm going to have the throw in the towel and declare you completely right.

Sorry I didn't realise I needed a poll to state my own experience. And actually if dogs pooped and wee-ed frequently OPs post wouldn't be here because Starbucks and everywhere else wouldn't allow dogs...

Some places have a menu for dogs, or at the very least have a puppuccino type drink for dogs. Dog friendly places usually have a jar of dog treats on counter. Some even take photos of visiting dogs and put it on their social media.
If a particular establishment allows and encourages dogs, then dog owners are doing nothing wrong by being in them.
Plus, some dogs do enjoy visiting them.

nationallampoons · 27/11/2023 15:09

@jacksonlamb Costa have a strict policy of no dogs allowed in store unless they're service dogs

Report the store and it'll stop

kurotora · 27/11/2023 15:23

I absolutely love dogs, and I think you’re not unreasonable. It’s not fair on those who are phobic or highly allergic when there are a large number of dogs in an indoor cafe.

But more to the point was your comment about separation these days. Yes, something has definitely gone mad. I was highly active in dog rescue in the early 2000s and leaving a dog for upto 6 hours was widely considered as okay in rescue. It has been typical for decades for dogs to be able to stay home during an average working day, having had a walk before and after work, then often at night too. Now we see dogs completely riddled with separation anxiety and people online freaking out at others for leaving a dog home more than a couple of hours without a walker or doggy daycare!

Something has certainly gone very wrong to convince the nation’s dog owners that dog ownership has become this ultra demanding life altering thing. And the dogs are anything but happier and more relaxed.

HamBone · 27/11/2023 15:30

I agree, @kurotora . Some dogs absolutely do have separation anxiety, but many don’t, including my dog. He’s completely fine left at home for an afternoon, although he’s rarely home alone for long as we wfh a lot. He has a strong bladder and quite happy to snooze for a few hours.

Cordychase · 27/11/2023 16:01

Providing those dogs werent interfering with you then yes, you are totally being unreasonable, your comment is devoid of any knowledge of dogs. My dog loves going out where he gets to experience different places and spend nice time with his family. Dogs are sociable creatures, their owners are literally the centre of their world. Why should they be left at home because of miserable dog haters?

sollenwir · 27/11/2023 16:17

A slight aside but I the only person who finds the word 'puppaccino' ridiculous?
Pup cup isn't much better.

This isn't a reflection on whether I think dogs should get treats, we had one who loved a cup of tea and/or cornflakes with milk at breakfast time, just the silliness of the word!
