7 dogs in Starbucks today is too much

I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

But to me, training, or at least recognising behaviour that will be unsuitable in certain situations is potentially part of having a dog? A bit like parenting - you don't have a baby and as they grow up, expect them to know by themselves how to behave eg where is suitable to run about (the park, the garden etc) and where isn't (a shop or cafe)
That's a big reason that puts me off having a dog - because I don't know if I have the time/energy/inclination to train it - it seems like having a toddler all over again!

Unfortunately, a significant proportion of dog owners think dogs come pre programmed to do everything they want them to.

We live in a golden age of information at our fingertips that people can access & many new dog owners do very little- they put more care into buying a car than they do a living sentient being.

Or they go the complete opposite way & treat them like very spoiled human babies & believe, as some parents do with their children, that their 'fur baby' can do no wrong.

Personally, I can't stand this type of dog owner as they are a poor reflection on those of us who go out of our way to make sure our dogs aren't being a nusiance to others.

I do think anyone who hates animals are a bit odd, but they can live their lives, but I'd appreciate them not imposing their 'values' on me & my dogs when we are just minding our own business & going about our day.

@justaboutdonenow

why are you trying to pretend dogs don’t lick their own arse and the arse of other dogs? And that some will eat shit? Weird thing to deny.

Its weird to pretend normal dog behaviour is somehow deviant though and be hyperbolic about it.
Most dogs do not eat shit. You’ve never seen a dog eat shit in a cafe.
Dogs might give each other a sniff on a walk but on a lead in a cafe it’s under the owners control. Also see cleaning themselves. It’s not a 24/7 hobby, dogs would rarely do it in a busy space.

Its just a dog. Ignore it.

It's not just a dog. It's 7. 7 in one cafe. Are you suggesting all 7 are docile, angelic and at their owners feet? Because I can assure you that is NOT the case.

And it is deviant at least to me to sniff someone's arse.

I've been into a cafe where there were only 3, and that was mayhem. Sit Ollie, Sit Olllie, Don't be silly Ollie- that lady's very nasal voice and her weak attempts at controlling her wet Ollie who was charging for the other 2 was chaotic to say the least!

SchadenfreudeIstMeinMittelname · 27/11/2023 10:13

I don't think dogs should be in cafes, but then I don't think dogs should be indoors at all. Proper dogs live in kennels.

You are assigning human constructed values of 'deviant' behaviour onto animals.

Animals have no sense of morality, they are literally amoral.

This is anthropomorphising at the other end of the scale from the people who believe their dog is a human child & it does an equal disservice to animals.

In zoology this (to us as a species) 'deviant' mutual anal sniffing would come under the umbrella of appropriate social behaviour appropriate for the species Canis familiaris.

In the case of 'Ollie', if he even exisits, the owner should have read the room & left, because I am absolutely with anyone else who finds this behaviour in a cafe unacceptable.

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 27/11/2023 10:25

I’d rather dogs than small children tbh. I think parents of toddlers are put off by dog friendly cafes. I have wondered if cafe owners do it deliberately as the high chair plus snack box is often just a mess which makes no money.

Bananagirl23 · 27/11/2023 10:27

I think at least some of the comments about dogs involved with faeces & ‘arses’ in relation to dogs is because they do seem to do these behaviours a lot. I live in a city and I see countless dogs pooing on the street or sniffing each other’s bums every day. It’s purely based on observation rather than any kind of obsession

And "proper" owners look after their pets. I don't think you should ever own a dog no 🐕deserves that. You sound awful.

StrictlyComeSnoozing · 27/11/2023 10:43

These posts always puzzle me.

In the vast majority of towns, some places allow dogs and some don't. It can't be that difficult to choose according to your own needs and preferences?

It also can't be difficult to understand that everybody else isn't living the same life and having the same day as you. If you see me in a cafe with my dogs, we're out on an all day hike. No, I won't just leave them at home because that's the point of the hike - they love it, its great exercise and I like doing things that we all enjoy. Similarly when you're on holiday you generally can't just leave your dog in the cottage, so you have to take it wherever you're going.

My dogs lay under the table or at our side. We always choose a table in a corner, out of the way where there is one. They don't bark, they're on short leads and they don't approach people. However, I do see some (not many) dogs that exhibit undesirable behaviour. Similarly, I see some children and some adults behave in unacceptable ways.

The business owner makes the decision on whether to allow dogs. They do so based on how much they stand to make or lose by allowing or not allowing them. Individual needs don't factor into it (unless for an assistance dog), and are yours to manage.

1990thatsme · 27/11/2023 10:45

sollenwir · 27/11/2023 08:02

Surely you can also understand the point of non-dog lovers wishing there were a few more dog free spaces, just as I can understand you wishing there to be lots of dog inclusive spaces?

Edited

Of course @sollenwir I totally agree and understand your point. However, that poster was talking about entitlement which is very different.

This thread is only lengthy because some posters cannot accept that those with dogs are entitled to take them anywhere they are welcomed by the business owner/manager.

Isn't that what takeaways are for?

If i want to drink while i walk i will happily use a takeaway.

If i want to drink after our walk i will use a dog friendly cafe because i can sit down.
Not that hard really.

Not at all weird, my dog licks his privates occasionally but then again men don't always wash their hands. Secondly they aren't doing any of that in a coffee shop.

So if you are invited to dinner by a dog owner do you decline?

TheCatfordCat · 27/11/2023 11:01

I love dogs. Would happily share any space with them. As long as they are well-behaved, I don't mind.

If all service dogs had to live in kennels they wouldn’t be nearly as good at their jobs. They need an intimate bond with a human to be able to perform.

IF? I'm going to make up a story about a badly behaved dog called Ollie on Monday morning because I am clearly a lunatic with nothing better to do.

Call the local hero in Kingston and pull up their CCTV footage then from 2 saturdays ago to verify then , madam knowitall🙄

Livelifelaughter · 27/11/2023 11:06

Shittyflute · 26/11/2023 22:28

Of course every dog in every cafe may not be well trained but it's not going to poo or wee...

Eh? How did you reach that conclusion? There are a couple of posters on this thread alone who have seen dogs wee or poo in a cafe. Extrapolate that out ...

A woman who picks her child up from the same school as my son admitted that her dog had done a poo in a kitchenware shop they were in. It does happen. It's almost inevitable that there will be 'accidents' tbh.

Because literally every shop where I live including designer clothing shops allows dogs...I have never seen a dog poo or wee and mine has not ever.
Yes accidents happen but you don't ban a category in the basis of a potential accident otherwise no one would actually be able to enter a shop at all on the grounds that they may shop lift, waters break, have a nose bleed...

I just put negative reviews on Tripadvisor and google now. If staff are allowing dogs to stand and have their paws on the serving counter. Or they are stroking the dog and then serving food without washing their hands. Or they are allowing a dog to jump up at another so the other dog gets startled and knocks into a
table and thus smashes a water jug. All of which I have seen in the last couple of months.

If enough people report bad experiences then hopefully the businesses may start to take note. Probably more useful than posting here ;-)

OP, leave a bad review of the Starbucks. If enough of us do it, hygiene may rule once again!

Edited

These reviews are really helpful to find places I can take my dog.

That's what you took from my post?

You must be a veritable joy to be around, no wonder so many people prefer dogs to interacting with the likes of people like you.

I offered up some information about the differences between human & annimal social interactions to try & help you understand why a behaviour you consider deviant is normal social behaviour in dogs.

Some people are very distanced from healthy relationships with animals & the natural world in general so I try & help them understand.

You, OTOH, are apparently just nasty.

Oh do go away. Did I ask you to lecture me? Take your sanctimonious preaching to someone who needs it or your best friends - the dogs. You're dull, patronising and quite frankly I have wasted my time engaging with someone as obnoxious as you.

Verv · 27/11/2023 12:11

If you can't cope with dogs in a coffee shop, go to a coffee shop that doesn't permit dogs.
If a coffee shop permits dogs, then dogs will be in there, you don't have to be.

jacksonlamb · 27/11/2023 12:46

Where I live it's very difficult to find a cafe where dogs are not allowed. The local Costa, which has a notice on the door saying 'No dogs except support dogs', regularly has several dogs in there, having a good sniff and lick at the food counter. The lovely staff don't say anything - I do wonder if it is a policy from Head Office to try to keep everyone happy. And I just want a quiet coffee, I don't want to get into an argument with a dog owner.

I don't mind dogs in pubs but I would love to have a venue where I could have coffee or lunch without dogs barking or coming over to sniff and lick me.
