7 dogs in Starbucks today is too much

I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

Yup bit like annoying kids

Animals and humans are not comparable.
This has been stated many times already, on this thread and on others.

SnailBlazer · 26/11/2023 20:53

It always amuses me on this threads when the only argument that some dog-owners have is, ‘but, but kids are worse’! That’s your only way to defend the behaviour of incompetent and selfish dog-owners like you? Says it all really!

*decent dog-owners are exempt from this comment.

Member869894 · 26/11/2023 20:54

The more.dogs the better. I love dogs!

sollenwir · 26/11/2023 20:54

@BitOutOfPractice exactly, I live more rurally but essentially share your thoughts - it isn't dog 'hating' to not want them everywhere we go. In fact lots of people like dogs but simply don't want to be forced to be surrounded by other people's pets! Comments like 'stay at home if you don't like dogs', from some entitled dog owners, show just how ridiculous the situation has become in terms of thinking dogs are more important than humans. They are not and never will be!

Fanofbrianbilston · 26/11/2023 20:54

You’re unreasonable for going to Starbucks and so are they

Skodacool · 26/11/2023 20:58

Ellejay67 · 26/11/2023 18:17

What's the difference with a service dog?

  1. They’re trained to not be a nuisance
  2. There are fewer of them
H007 · 26/11/2023 20:58

@sollenwir there’s plenty of places, and where there’s not it’s probably because there isn’t a good enough market for it and is a demand for dog friendly.

There might be 'plenty of places' in your area, you cannot possibly know that to be true of all areas.

H007 · 26/11/2023 21:16

@sollenwir 🥱

I Vote with my feet too and won’t go into coffee shops that allow dogs in.

This country is becoming over run with bloody dogs! The solution is to stop treating them like babies and leave them at home.

That suits us down to the ground, more room for dogs!!

Do you always respond like that when someone provides information?

Humans are more important than dogs.

Bananagirl23 · 26/11/2023 21:40

I’m not a dog hater but I’ve had some pretty bad experiences at the hands of irresponsible owners and untrained dogs. Filled dog poo bags left in our bin, dogs vomiting in the sea near my swimming child, dogs jumping up on me with dirty paws, dog poo on the street getting stuck in buggy wheels, etc. etc. So I don’t mistrust dogs per se, I just don’t think every dog in every cafe is going to be well trained. Plus I worry treating dogs like people is making their behaviour worse, not better

What harm does it do OP.
Live and let live and find another cafe or stay at home.
So many cynophobes on this site.

Stay home? Bloody hell, how entitled are you?

Frequency · 26/11/2023 22:01

No one thinks dogs are more important than people. No one on this thread has stated that dogs are more important than people. Not one single poster.

How many times/ways does this need to be explained? It is not about people hating non-dog owners. It is not being done to spite people who do not like dogs. It's about profit.

It's business. Plain and simple. Business owners noticed a demand for dog-friendly spaces and supplied them. It's not complex. I don't know much about business but even I understand the basic principle of supply and demand.

If there are no dog-free spaces in your locale it is because there is no demand. If you think that is not correct, brilliant, you've identified a demand. Open your own dog-free space and supply.

In the meantime, someone taking their dog into a dog-friendly space is not entitled or selfish. Someone wanting businesses to ban dogs at the expense of their profit margins and the staff they employ to suit a minority is entitled.

H007 · 26/11/2023 22:07

@Frequency 100% agree!

@Cosyblankets
Re: "Costa
I'm sure there will be a few near you"

Errr, nope. There's a Costa machine in the petrol station. There's 3 not-Costa chain places and 2 independents, all accepting dogs.

Livelifelaughter · 26/11/2023 22:09

The thing is businesses aren't daft. Dog owners walk the streets every day of the year whatever the weather... meaning going for a coffee on days when other people will be sitting at home. If people don't like dogs in cafes they don't need to go to a dog friendly cafe , if the cafe owner has a problem with dogs or thinks it's stopping business he would not allow dogs. It's that simple really.

Of course every dog in every cafe may not be well trained but it's not going to poo or wee...

GlomOfNit · 26/11/2023 22:23

Our local small market town (SE, semi-rural area) boasts several cafes and pubs, and to my current knowledge, ALL of them apart from the bloody Waitrose cafe welcome dogs in. Some entitled git with a grievance went round all of them, grilled the cafe owners about how nice it would be if this was a dog-friendly town (I didn't think it wasn't one already) and pressured them into taking a 'dogs welcome here' sticker for the window - the more who took one made it harder for the rest. So now there is virtually nowhere in town to have a coffee without there being dogs in there too. Not all of them are well-behaved - I've lost track of the times a dog's barked and barked and not been taken outside.

Not everyone loves dogs, and even if you like them, sometimes you don't want to share cramped, overheated and badly ventilated space with them. Dogs can smell. In winter they're often pretty muddy from the country walks round here. My autistic son's terrified of dogs, but likes a cafe - so where does he stand?

DodoNest · 26/11/2023 22:24

sollenwir · 26/11/2023 20:41

I've already stated my opinion, but to save you trawling through the 30 odd pages.

I think that 'dog friendly' doesn't necessarily mean any dog can automatically go in the premises - at the least the dog should be well trained to sit under the table/at owners feet (so not on seats), not beg/drool at other customers, not be allowed to roam around the place, ideally not soaking wet and shaking itself randomly, and owners should also bear in mind how many dogs are already in there as they enter/the layout (especially if you have more than one dog with you/larger dogs that need more space).

I think that if somewhere says 'sorry, no dogs' then unless it's a service dog then of course you don't take the dog(s) in there.

Ideally I prefer non-dog friendly places but sadly they are harder to come by these days.

I actually agree with all your points except I prefer dog friendly places and try to avoid those that are non-dog friendly. My dog would meet all your criteria (unless wet in which case I wouldn't bring her) and is bred to be hypoallergenic (I know this isn't 100% but all the people I personally know with allergies are fine around her).

Shittyflute · 26/11/2023 22:28

Of course every dog in every cafe may not be well trained but it's not going to poo or wee...

Eh? How did you reach that conclusion? There are a couple of posters on this thread alone who have seen dogs wee or poo in a cafe. Extrapolate that out ...

A woman who picks her child up from the same school as my son admitted that her dog had done a poo in a kitchenware shop they were in. It does happen. It's almost inevitable that there will be 'accidents' tbh.

agonyau · 26/11/2023 22:38

Maybe it’s true more places are welcoming dogs, but there are plenty that don’t still.
Usually those that do welcome them have a designated area for dogs (in the case of one pub I go to for example) so those who wish to can sit apart from dogs, perhaps this practice should be implemented more widely to keep everyone happy.

Again, in some areas there are not 'plenty' of non-dog allowing places.

ChestnutShell3 · 26/11/2023 22:46

Our local cafe owner stopped a man at the door who was attempting to bring his dog in. I was so pleased I vowed I’d go in even more and give more of my custom. Like it’s been said further upthread, you have to vote with your feet.

Honestly, I’d never eat anywhere that allowed dogs inside. It’s really unhygienic, and I don’t know how these places can get away with it. Aren’t all places that service food obligated to follow the practices outlined by the Food Standards Agency?
