7 dogs in Starbucks today is too much

I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

@Goldenbear your husbands cousins auntie’s hairdresser must be right then, and all the dogs I saw over that two year period were hallucinations 😂

Perhaps you just frequented establishments with that inclination being a dog lover there must be a bias towards liking those places. Yes, outside as it is easier to sit outside in Spain and you are expected to but this is not comparative to dark, cold Northern European cities were the eating culture is not predominantly outside. In a November dark afternoon in England, we surprisingly didn't want to sit outside.

ArticWillow · 26/11/2023 20:07

I like the smell of my dog: it's earthy with a hint of grass.
But I agree, stale or wet dog smell is unpleasant.

To add, no it is just my husband's direct cousin, no hairdressers, Aunts of hairdressers, don't know where you got that from, he has lived there all his life not just for 2 years!

Those of you complaining that dogs smell, I wonder how you will survive a trip on the Central Line in July. Or at any other rush hour indeed. People stink, of garlic, of spices, of perfume only they like, of unwashed armpits, of stale fried food and and because apparently there is a shortage of toothpaste in some London boroughs.

Dogs are fragrant compared to most humans I encounter on TFL.

Are you sure you aren’t smelling yourself? Wet dog is a far more disgusting smell than I have ever smelt on the Central Line!

Thistlewoman · 26/11/2023 20:14

Well very few areas cant be segregated, given we used to have to do the same for smokers/non smokers. Not all dogs are smelly, any more than all children are badly behaved. And frankly some people are pretty smelly and I wouldn't want them anywhere near me-indoors or out. The key is tolerance-we live in a heavily populated country, so have to adapt without banning. And I still dont agree that humans 'trump' animals-thats an assumption which you may make but not all of us humans do.

Dartmoorcheffy · 26/11/2023 20:17

Wtf does it matter if there is a dog in a place that serves food

The dog isn't doing the cooking or serving. It hasn't touched your food.

If they are on a lead, not barking and not at your table what effect is this going to have on you ?

Faith77 · 26/11/2023 20:18

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/11/2023 17:55

I rarely see kids run around a coffee shop.

Also your dog is absolutely not cleaner than a child. Children wear shoes and don’t have exposed arseholes

What is with all the comparing to kids? It creeps me out that people think they’re the same

Ummm...are you THAT daft that you think childrens' shoes are cleaner than dogs' feet?! They BOTH walk on the street outside!! Dog feet are no dirtier than human shoes.

And, for the record, I have NEVER seen a dog relieving itself in a café or restaurant. I have, unfortunately, experienced entitled parents changing their kids' dirty nappies on tables in Starbucks and my daughter won't set foot in a Harvester anymore after an experience where an inattentive carer resulted in someone defecating whilst we were eating our dinner. Humans aren't always cleaner than dogs. Far from it.

To be fair, many people are happy to eat other cute/intelligent animals such as rabbits, horses and pigs.

"A" dog is fine. Usually - if it sits quietly by its owner and doesn't get in the way or bother other customers

The issue arises when there are several of them and or they won't leave other people alone.

As for food it becomes a problem when the staff fuss over a dog and then serve food without washing their hands. And yes, it does happen. Often.

SnailBlazer · 26/11/2023 20:24

I just put negative reviews on Tripadvisor and google now. If staff are allowing dogs to stand and have their paws on the serving counter. Or they are stroking the dog and then serving food without washing their hands. Or they are allowing a dog to jump up at another so the other dog gets startled and knocks into a
table and thus smashes a water jug. All of which I have seen in the last couple of months.

If enough people report bad experiences then hopefully the businesses may start to take note. Probably more useful than posting here ;-)

OP, leave a bad review of the Starbucks. If enough of us do it, hygiene may rule once again!

What harm does it do OP.
Live and let live and find another cafe or stay at home.
So many cynophobes on this site.

A phobia is an irrational fear.

It's not irrational to be scared of dogs.

But actually I am not scared of them, I just don't like being hassled by them and having to change where I go to avoid out of control animals.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 26/11/2023 20:27

Moll2020 · 26/11/2023 18:29

I didn’t even know dogs were allowed in Starbucks!

There are very few places they are not allowed these days. Maybe indoor swimming pools.

Ah well, you might well get some I suppose.

Happylady56 · 26/11/2023 20:38

Some time dogs are better behaved than children, My dog comes every where with me and knows how to behave. She is excellent with children as she is a therapy dog who had worked in Children’s Hospices. I think we have to understand other people’s needs, while our children are important, they shouldn’t be wrapping in cotton wool.
well behaved dogs are easier than children who run wild, scream ,throw food around and generally misbehave.

sollenwir · 26/11/2023 20:41

DodoNest · 26/11/2023 18:30

I agree it's ok to not like dogs. People can dislike whatever they want.

I don't think it's ok to impose your dislikes on other people. For instance telling people with dogs not to visit dog friendly places.

Where do you fall on this?

I've already stated my opinion, but to save you trawling through the 30 odd pages.

I think that 'dog friendly' doesn't necessarily mean any dog can automatically go in the premises - at the least the dog should be well trained to sit under the table/at owners feet (so not on seats), not beg/drool at other customers, not be allowed to roam around the place, ideally not soaking wet and shaking itself randomly, and owners should also bear in mind how many dogs are already in there as they enter/the layout (especially if you have more than one dog with you/larger dogs that need more space).

I think that if somewhere says 'sorry, no dogs' then unless it's a service dog then of course you don't take the dog(s) in there.

Ideally I prefer non-dog friendly places but sadly they are harder to come by these days.

Dartmoorcheffy · 26/11/2023 20:41

"As for food it becomes a problem when the staff fuss over a dog and then serve food without washing their hands. And yes, it does happen. Often."

Thats hardly the dogs fault. I'm a private chef and there are often dogs at the houses i go to. I don't pet them until after I've finished handling food.

Moll2020 · 26/11/2023 20:42

@Didshejustsaythatoutloud
do you mean me?

H007 · 26/11/2023 20:43

The solution is for you not to go into dog friendly places, there are plenty of places that aren’t dog friendly.

You've maybe not read all 30 odd pages on this thread, but many folk are confirming that it's becoming harder and harder to find dog free options in many locations.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/11/2023 20:46

Dogs are literally everywhere I go now. Bearing in mind I live in a city centre:

my shared office space: dogs
my local supermarket: dogs
my local pub (urban): inside: dogs
my local pub (urban): outside: dogs
john Lewis: dogs
lovely restaurant next to my office: dogs
park run: dogs

that doesn’t include my walk to work

I think it’s he gym is the only place I’m not in contact with them.

they literally are everywhere. And I’m No dog hater. I like them. But good lord give us a rest !

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/11/2023 20:49

You are reaching so much it is actually laughable. No one would ever go out to a cafe, restaurant, pub, bar, if they were worried about staff not washing their hands after going to the toilet. The argument against dogs in cafes is different, I don't know why you are being so obtuse about it.

Marypopalot · 26/11/2023 20:50

Yup bit like annoying kids

busymomtoone · 26/11/2023 20:50

Well said 👏👏

BitOutOfPractice · 26/11/2023 20:50

I’ll not even mention the dog shit left outside the lift on the fifth floor of my urban apartment block. A block where dogs aren’t even allowed and yet someone thinks it’s ok for them to not only shit but to leave it there.

and yet dog owners still take this moral high ground about how lovely dogs are. Irrelevant when their owners aren’t.
