7 dogs in Starbucks today is too much

I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

I really like dogs, love to play with them, no problem if they lick my hands (I can always wash up)... but I don't like dogs to sniff my plate or cup. I don't think that makes me a doghater. Tables and chairs are often very low at Starbucks, so yes, easy for dogs to come uncomfortably close. Still, it's the dog owner's responsability. People who take their dog out for coffee should restrain their dog from licking plates and such.

faffadoodledo · 26/11/2023 19:01

@Meowandthen how true!

GreekDogRescue · 26/11/2023 19:03

What harm does it do OP.
Live and let live and find another cafe or stay at home.
So many cynophobes on this site.

Lindyloomillion1 · 26/11/2023 19:08

If a dog would just sit under its owners table, not beg for food or try to jump up that could be ok. But not all dogs are like that.
Something has changed, you didn't used to get any but guide dogs in food establishments

Isthisstillmymidlifecrisis · 26/11/2023 19:09

agree ! Our dog is 10. He doesn’t like being in cafes etc as stressful for him with too many smells, legs (and other dogs) and he becomes overwhelmed. So we don’t take him in cafes unless it’s big and mostly empty.
he also gets stressed with other dogs coming in our house. You’d not think this would be an obvious issue but several friends always bring their dogs everywhere- including into my house when picking up their kids from play dates/dropping my child off. It really pisses me off that they can’t leave the dog outside for 5 mins. And just do that Childish giggle “oh he’s just being friendly” as the dog jumps on my sofa or takes my kids/dogs toys

so I’m all for leaving the dog at home every time !

greenbeansnspinach · 26/11/2023 19:09

Some dogs are really well trained and well behaved everywhere including in cafes but a significant minority aren’t. Mainly barking if you just want to sit down quietly. For that reason, I avoid places to eat that are dog friendly.
That choice is really restricted now in our local village and rural area. A recent post on our local Facebook group asked for recommendations for dog friendly cafes and every single local cafe and pub was named.
Seven well trained and controlled dogs in a cafe big enough to accommodate them all would be fine, but out of seven dogs what’s the likelihood of all seven being well behaved?
I do think things have gone a little too far in the doggy direction when it’s impossible to have a cup of tea anywhere without whining, barking, and the possibility of dog-on-dog action.

TmFid · 26/11/2023 19:09

Starbucks support of Zionism and apartheid is a better reason to not go in. Howard Shultz is the largest private owner of Starbucks shares and is a staunch zionist who invests heavily in Israel’s economy including a recent $1.7 Billion investment in cybersecurity startup Wiz.Have been boycotting it for years, along with everyone I know.

I have a dog, I love my dog. But I’m not ignorant to the fact dogs as animals are absolutely filthy..
they lick their own (and other dogs) bums and other regions, will happily munch on their own feces, if your walking one and it comes across fox droppings they’ll instinctively roll in it. By nature they are not hygienic creatures.
If not kept on a tight training schedule they can be disruptive in so many ways, they don’t understand personal space, they will jump at you, whinge, bark, howl etc.

we went out for a Sunday dinner and were seated next to a family with a dog. It kept trumping and stank. Eventually it squatted and did its business on the floor right next to my bag as it had an upset stomach.

With the exception of outdoor areas they shouldn’t be allowed in pubs, cafes etc.

Can ANYONE read the above and genuinely think it’s ok and that dogs should be allowed in pubs and restaurants?! Sure it doesn’t happen very often but the risk of something so rank happening is always there.

Frequency · 26/11/2023 19:12

It really pisses me off when I see dogs tied up outside shops. They don't behave the same way as they do with their owner when they are alone. You can never guarantee your dog will behave when they are unsupervised.

Plus, dog thieves. I used to work with dogs so I know all too well what happens to dogs when they are stolen and it's nothing nice.

I always feel obliged to stay with them until their owner returns.

Worriedatwork1 · 26/11/2023 19:13

I don’t hate dogs, I have my own dogs and have my entire life, but this trend of suddenly having dogs in restaurants and coffee shops is really off putting. Most have outside sitting and no issue in dogs being there, but my own dogs aren’t allowed near the table when we’re eating (or on the furniture) so I don’t want to go out and have a dog sniffing rolling round next to where I’m eating a meal.

Do you know how many people don't wash their hands after they'd been to the loo and after they have wiped their shitty bums?

Have you seem how many pick their noses and then touch everything? Some even enjoy eating their snot, even in public.

My dogs licking their balls is the least of my worries.

Crishell · 26/11/2023 19:16

I don't dislike dogs either. It's just not appropriate.

@ChardonnaysBeastlyCat

none of that is remotely as bad as a dog doing a shit right next to you in a restaurant when you’re eating and drinking.

You're honestly comparing humans to dogs?
You're honestly comparing an animal not washing their hands after going to the loo compared to a animal licking their actual arse crack after shitting on the street?

Speaking of trolls, it’s pretty weird the amount of children haters on mumsnet?
Extremely odd.

You said it. Odd beyond odd.

Morgysmum · 26/11/2023 19:18

I like dogs, but 7 is a bit much. Especially if they are large or medium sized.
I get letting dogs in, but there needs to be a limit, like shops that say only 3 teens at once.

lostonmars · 26/11/2023 18:45

No, just for you and your smelly animals.

My smelly dogs & I couldn't give a toss about your hatred, & neither could thousands of other dog owners.

Seethe away in your joyless little world.

FindingNeverland28 · 26/11/2023 19:19

This would be my worst nightmare. I’m severely allergic to dogs (all furry animals) and they trigger my asthma. I take 2 different tablets and my inhalers daily, but even one pooch will set me off. Never mind 7. I will avoid going to places where there are dogs, but there are times when dogs will come in after I am seated and enjoying a drink or something to eat. I would absolutely expect to see dogs in a country pub near some nice walks, but Starbucks?

Decided today to stop off at a cafe whilst dog walking as I’ve been here several times without my dog and know they have dog beds and treats for them. I go there because I love dogs. It’s one of only 5 in the area that are dog friendly ( 11 are not - yes we have loads of cafes). I would 100% choose the dog friendly cafe over non dog friendly - you do realise they don’t go in the kitchen don’t you?! No more unhygienic than kids, or walking in with muddy boots/ wet coats on. ( though personally I always put a blanket or my coat down if they are sitting on a seat) Spain and Italy are way better than us at welcoming dogs yet we are supposed to be a nation of dog lovers !!

Where are all these dog cafes and bars in Spain, we stayed in an area of Spain that is pretty much 99.9% Spanish i.e no British tourists or other nationalities, spent a fortune on eating out in casual and not so casual places, I didn't see one dog in these cafes/restaurants, not even small dogs, not even in beach cafes.

"Do you know how many people don't wash their hands after they'd been to the loo and after they have wiped their shitty bums?"

No, I don't know. Do you know? Can you share those statistics with us please? And as long as it's not someone handling my coffee in a coffee shop full of dogs, I'm not that bothered (in the context of this thread).

Why yes I am. And it's not the dogs who are the worst offenders in this situation.

You're honestly comparing an animal not washing their hands after going to the loo compared to a animal licking their actual arse crack after shitting on the street?

Quite. I wouldn't call a human hot washing their hands after they have wiped their shit an animal, but if you do then I won't disagree. Much.

How do you know it's not someone who's just made your coffee?

The dog licking anything is the least of your worries, the dogs don't prepare your food with their dirty hands.

Airspice · 26/11/2023 19:24

I like dogs but think they should not be allowed anywhere that serves food, it’s unhygienic. If you want your dog with you at the cafe/pub/restaurant then sit outside. It’s very much a ‘well I like my dog so tough shit to everyone else’ attitude.

Yep, entertainment while waiting for my delicious crumble to cool down.

The anger of the real dog hating obsessives on here is hilarious.
