7 dogs in Starbucks today is too much

I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

@sollenwir the attitude can be compared, though. 'My child/dog is more important than anyone else, and if you disagree you hate all children/dogs'.
It's a growing attitude in a society that prioritises individual rights and an 'all or nothing' mentality. It's not enough to have SOME dog friendly cafes, it's got to be every single one. It's not enough to have plenty of places to take children, it's got to be every pub, every eatery, every festival, etc.
Anything less and the UK is anti-dog, anti-child, etc.
I don't see why dogs have to be everywhere. They didn't used to be and people coped. Ditto children.
I love dogs. I love kids. I think there absolutely should be dog friendly places and child friendly places. I just think it's OK for it not to be every single public space.

I get it when you live where there aren't many cafes/pubs etc full stop, but in a town with lots of places, it shouldn't be so wrong to want there to be some that don't accept dogs. I feel the same about restaurants and children. If there are 20 restaurants in town, 5 being adult only isn't unreasonable. Suggest either of those to some people, though, and suddenly you want all dogs put down and every child locked in the house until their 18th birthday.
We can't please everybody all the time, but there's a balance that goes some way towards that.

I'm in a small ex-mining town in the NE of England and we have no Costa. We have Costa machines inside the local McColls (dogs not allowed). We've only recently gotten a Starbucks. IDK if they allow dogs. I've never been.

We do, however, have at least 2 Wetherspoons, 3 Greggs, 2 McDonalds, and a KFC.

We don't have any of those either - we live in one of the few areas which pretty much doesn't have chains (other than the odd supermarket, chemist etc). A lot of the local places need every penny so have bowed to the dog friendly crowd.

XenoBitch · 26/11/2023 17:23

MsBea · 26/11/2023 17:00

You're not sorry though.

Why should they be sorry? They are not doing anything wrong.

This thread (and most of the posts moaning about dogs being outside their home) is batshit. I simply can not comprehend why people can be so angry at others who are not doing anything wrong. If the rules says a dogs are allowed in a cafe, then dog owners are not doing anything wrong by being in there. Ranting about it online does not change that fact.

Who’s demanding more rights? Are we not just saying it’s ok to take dogs (Fidos to you) into places they’re allowed in.

At the expense of the humans who don’t want them there or can’t be round them

AlwaysGinPlease · 26/11/2023 17:24

@TrishIsMySpiritAnimal oh dear god. We don't NEED to leave them at home when THEY ARE ALLOWED IN SOME PLACES!

This is just going in circles. I have dogs. I will take them anywhere I want that ALLOWS them in and if people don't like it, they can go somewhere that DOES NOT allow dogs! It's really not hard to grasp..although clearly some people are hard of understanding

That’s not demanding more rights is it? It’s going to places we’re allowed to. If you don’t like it start writing to head offices.

Frequency · 26/11/2023 17:34

I agree in an ideal world there should be dog-free spaces and child-free spaces but if the market is not there for it we cannot reasonably expect businesses to cater to this.

How would it even work? Who would decide which establishments were no longer allowed to welcome dogs? I don't know a single business owner who would happily earn less profit to cater to a smaller market who do not like or cannot be around dogs. Nor do I know any staff who would be happy to lose their job because the business is now quieter.

We live in a capitalist society and that is not how capitalism works.

minipie · 26/11/2023 17:35

I never had an issue with dogs in cafes until the other day when a dog repeatedly barked - a really piercing yap, very unpleasant to listen to - owner made no attempt to shush or distract it.

Meanwhile a mum was there with her toddler, toddler had been totally happy and quiet but started crying and covering her ears after the 3rd or 4th bark. Mum had to pack toddler in buggy and take her out.

If your dog (or child) is making a loud annoying noise and you can’t stop them, you remove them. I don’t care if you’re half way through your coffee, you leave rather than ruin everyone else’s peace.

I know not all dogs or owners are like this but I can now see why some cafes are dog free.

Lemondoughnut · 26/11/2023 17:36

When I see the mess left by parents of young children compared to a dog lying by it's owners feet, I know which I find more unhygienic.
I have a dog and am very limited in where I can take her so there are lots of choices if you want to avoid them.

1990thatsme · 26/11/2023 17:37

Stop being sensible @Frequency, the dog haters refuse to accept the reality that dogs are everywhere now and if some posters really can’t cope, there will be places they will exclude themselves from.

Mswarrior77 · 26/11/2023 17:39

So what about service dogs? It's illegal to not allow them

Thistlewoman · 26/11/2023 17:41

Tbh I'd rather have 7 dogs in s cafe than 7 screaming/badly behaved children. There. Said it. The best thing cafes/coffee shops should do is have dog friendly AND dog free zones. Then everyone is catered for.

Sarels · 26/11/2023 17:41

Totally agree more dogs the better ❤️🦮

busymomtoone · 26/11/2023 17:42

Decided today to stop off at a cafe whilst dog walking as I’ve been here several times without my dog and know they have dog beds and treats for them. I go there because I love dogs. It’s one of only 5 in the area that are dog friendly ( 11 are not - yes we have loads of cafes). I would 100% choose the dog friendly cafe over non dog friendly - you do realise they don’t go in the kitchen don’t you?! No more unhygienic than kids, or walking in with muddy boots/ wet coats on. ( though personally I always put a blanket or my coat down if they are sitting on a seat) Spain and Italy are way better than us at welcoming dogs yet we are supposed to be a nation of dog lovers !!

WadiShab · 26/11/2023 17:43

OP I couldn't agree with you more. Apart from guide dogs I do not see why it is deemed appropriate or necessary for dogs to be inside shops but particularly food outlets. If they have outside seating then fine but outside of that it's a firm no for me. Dogs on the seats on public transport is another one, I mean what is the reason for this?

PrueRamsay · 26/11/2023 17:43

Mswarrior77 · 26/11/2023 17:39

Quite. Everywhere accepts dogs, so if you are severely allergic, you couldn’t risk going into a pub or anyway because a dog could just have left.

Even aircraft regularly have sniffer dogs going over every seat just before takeoff.

August1980 · 26/11/2023 17:45

I Agree dogs better are better than humans.
Catering to everyone’s likes and dislikes is what’s wrong with the world today. If small things like dogs bother you, ignore/move on. It’s no wonder we can’t eradicate the bigger things like racism, religious hate, war etc.

Would OP’ and her possie’s disdain still apply if the dogs were guide dogs? I am probably being a bit biased here as a person who works with animals, would everyone who is so anti taking dogs around still feel the same if I told you a dog I know currently supports a 7 year old autistic child who has made such progress in such a short time. Should said 7 year old sit out in the cold with the dog so OP and likes are prioritised? Same with guide dogs? Perhaps dog friendly establishments and bits that cater to everyone’s dislikes should be better marked so people have the option to choose if they go in or not.

LuckySantangelo35 · 26/11/2023 17:46

How do some of you dog lovers cope? Like when you go out to work? Or to a wedding? Or a hen do? Or cocktail bar? Places where you absolutely cannot bring your dog?! Genuinely curious!!

Talkinrubbishagain · 26/11/2023 17:47

Oh dear.
I’ve never seen dogs sniffing cups and plates and most are well behaved.
Allowing dogs in one’s establishment equals more customers. I’ve seen several pubs and cafes with plenty of customers with dogs whilst the others remain nearly empty.

Moreorlessmentallystable · 26/11/2023 17:48

Dogs barking and yapping all the time is not really what you want when trying to have a nice meal out, also very unhygienic, not to mention people with allergies (to dog hair and saliva) are at danger going to all these places...the fact that people compare bringing a dog to a restaurant with bringing kids to a restaurant AND they say they prefer dogs is shocking, it just shows how much people have been brainwashed to love and care more for dogs than their own species.

TrishIsMySpiritAnimal · 26/11/2023 17:52

Lol at not wanting a mutt sticking it’s nose on your crotch and getting hair in your latte being compared to racism 😂

Your pet is not a marginalised group

Faith77 · 26/11/2023 17:53

My dog is cleaner and better behaved than many kids, tbh! Would rather go to a place with several dogs sitting quietly with their owners than a place with several kids running riot whilst their parents to b*gger all to stop them!

I grew up with dogs and until 10 years ago had a lovely Lhasa.

Between me and my parents the dogs

  • Could stay home alone NO issues
  • Were never allowed of the sofa or upstairs
  • We’re treated like a pet not a baby
  • were never taken into any building except houses where they were welcome and the vet

I actually like most dogs, but dog owners in recent years have become the most entitled deluded weirdos and I’m not sure what happened to trigger this

I rarely see kids run around a coffee shop.

Also your dog is absolutely not cleaner than a child. Children wear shoes and don’t have exposed arseholes

What is with all the comparing to kids? It creeps me out that people think they’re the same
