I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

Dog bashing threads are rapidly over taking teacher bashing and benefit bashing on MN.

We just need a thread where a MIL on benefits has parked badly, popped in uninvited and brought her dog for MN Bingo full house. Grin

Don't forget to include some nhs bashing for a full house

Tatumm · 26/11/2023 02:33

Where I grew up dogs lived outdoors and certainly were not taken into areas where people eat. It’s disgusting.

And where you live now people take them to coffee houses and pubs.

CatOnTheCludgy · 26/11/2023 06:53

Isnt it because dogs now are so expensive and stealable that owners won't leave them outside a shop? Whereas about 5 years ago they would have.

MyCircumference · 26/11/2023 06:57

not 5 years ago but 20+ years ago the dog would have been left outside a shop
but left at home if the owner wanted to go out for coffee
coffee shops are a more modern phenomenon.

The dog thread police have arrived 🤣

Beefcurtains79 · 26/11/2023 07:09

Speaking of trolls, it’s pretty weird the amount of children haters on mumsnet?
Extremely odd.

SharonEllis · 26/11/2023 07:14

"I Love seeing dogs out and about, enjoying themselves."

Part of the problem is they are often not enjoying themselves. I see so many stressed dogs in places they don't want to be, yapping at what's going on around them. And untrained dogs straining at the lead or getting over excited. And owners oblivious, incompetent, or thinking its cute. These dogs are a nuisance to the rest of us. I definitely avoid a place where there are dogs and both my kids have come dislike them because we've had several experiences of badly behaved dogs and unplesant owners who just don't care.Children find rude aggressive adults very unsettling.

Yeah, it's weird. I wonder if there are say, bike forums around where posters just hang around going, "Bastarding bikes everywhere, can't bloody move for them, and cyclists...worst people in the world, yeah, much prefer this electric scooter. Still though, haven't got anything better to do than hang out with you guys on Bikenet"?

MrsDotCotton · 26/11/2023 07:22

We're seeing an invasion of dogs in places where you want peace and quiet too eg nail salons and hairdressers. I'm paying substantial chunks of money for a service and then you hear it - that unexpected bark. Uurrrghhh...as regards service dogs then no one would object to a proper service dog.

One of the many advantages of sitting next to a dog in a cafe is that they don't watch stuff on their phones without headphones on. I'd take a slobbering dog over that any day.

Good heavens. You must be fun to be around. How can someone sitting with headphones on offend you Confused No impact on your life at all.

C01dWat3r · 26/11/2023 07:25

I find that with children though. Nothing annoys me more than paying £££ for a haircut only to have kids running around salons during the holidays. It’s not the chilled ambience I’m paying for.

SamphireAndSalmon · 26/11/2023 07:33

EdgarsTale · 25/11/2023 19:09

I agree. It’s so annoying. Unfortunately a lot of dogs will whine & bark if left, so you also have to think of the poor neighbours if the dogs are left at home. It feels like everyone has to have a dog these days.

My dog is fine at home thanks. She actually never barks.
If I've been at the park exercising her and want to pop into a nearby cafe, then they will only get my trade if she can pop in with me.
I'd never let her sit on a chair/sofa in a cafe!
She wouldn't try to steal anyone's food. Or be anywhere near the food.
So, I guess it's up to the owners if they want my custom or not. Not you op 🤷🏻‍♀️

Whiteday · 26/11/2023 05:48

How about children? Surely they are as well?

What a silly & typically unsympathetic comment. Children tend not to lie on the floor.

C01dWat3r · 26/11/2023 07:36

Um they often do and they run around untethered by leads.

Newuser75 · 26/11/2023 07:40

I didn't realise dogs were allowed in Starbucks!

I love dogs and have two but I can't help thinking that it's a bit rank to have dogs inside at a food establishment. And also what about the people who are allergic to dogs.

Frequency · 26/11/2023 07:42

It might vary by area but I think a lot of people need to give their rose-tinted specs a wipe. Dogs in pubs has always been a thing. I remember being a teenager and having to visit a certain pub every night out to see the white GSD that lived there. We used to holiday in popular dog walking spots and the pubs all dogs in. There'd be dogs running around the campsites too.

There used to be more dogs in shops too because there were more locally owned shops and the owners generally lived in the flats above them. The whole family, including the dog, would wander up and down the stairs to talk to their parent behind the till.

People would kick their dogs out on a morning and let them back in at dinnertime. Quite often one or two would break into a local primary school and cause mayhem. This idea that dogs need to be under perfect control 100% of the time and never show an ounce of personality or self-awareness is a relatively modern concept.

I'm not suggesting we go back to lone dogs wandering the streets but some of the posts on threads like these make it seem like pet dogs are a recent phenomenon. Humans have kept dogs as companions since the dawn of humanity (admittedly they were wolves back then).

It says without headphones, not with.

@SharonEllis they're more of a trip hazard, sorry and all that!

But there are far, far more of them and they are anthropomorphised, and people are sentimental about them to an unprecedented degree.

Yes, it’s revolting and should be banned. It’s very backward. I won’t spend my money anywhere that admits dogs.

May I ask what bastion of enlightenment is was where dogs are kept outside? As opposed to the backward practice of taking them to the coffee house in the UK.

As for your money, you're perfectly right to spend it where you want.

AlwaysGinPlease · 26/11/2023 08:35

Why are the frothing rabid dog haters blaming the dogs and owners and not the owner of the establishment that ALLOWS THE DOGS INSIDE! 😂

You lot need to find something else to do. It's so fucking boring. There's a new anti dog thread almost daily and it's always the same old waffle.

I will now take even more joy than I already do, taking my very well behaved dogs in dog friendly places and hoping that one of the MN anti dog frothers is sitting silently stewing about it but of course not saying anything because it's allowed! If they said anything to the owner they'd get short sharp shrift so of course, they don't.

Corgiowner · 26/11/2023 08:37

Daveismyhero · 25/11/2023 19:16

Dogs are everywhere now, inthink part of the issue is that people are shamed on places like mumsnet and Facebook for leaving their dog home alone and told that if they are going to go out they shouldn't have a dog, so that encourages them to bring the dog places that allow them in. There is certainly a shift, my previous dog never really came anywhere with us, we walked him and played with him and that was that. Current dog comes a lot more places not because he can't be left but just because more places accept dogs now. I have been shamed for going to work and leaving him hone alone even though I know he doesn't mind, so that's probably got a lot to do with the shift in culture
