I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

I love dogs. I love seeing them everywhere. Mine are also part of my family.

I heard of a GP somewhere rural that takes his Dog to work. Just sits under his table and he asks if his patients mind.

I do understand that having an allergy may make it difficult and having designated doggy areas sounds like a good compromise.

People compare dogs and children because both are a choice!

I love dogs!! They are better than people! However I agree with the OP! There was one in John Lewis today walking around the mens section. When was this a thing? Guide dogs yes but this was just someone’s pet. Also in London a couple of weeks ago a guy picked his dog up and walked into Selfridges with it.. I just wouldn’t..

Agree also in cafes .. I would never bring my dog because he’s a pain in the arse.. so leave at home, unless it’s a v cute puppy.. then please bring it x

dogs are NOT better than people.

Again I worry about the humans you've interacted with to come to this conclusion

Kangaboo · 25/11/2023 23:30

@Livelovebehappy its not the dogs I have an issue with, it’s with the owners that cannot leave them at home. As someone said earlier it may be down to lockdown & them never learning to separate (dogs & owners!) I know people that decline events or spend a small fortune on dog sitters so that their dog is permanently accompanied (as you would have to do with a small child) but the dog is never going to grow up so it will be like this for them for years. Madness!

Myfabby · 25/11/2023 23:23

you can't be comparing dogs to children. c'mon!

What additional business do you attract by letting in dogs?

More people. A lot of people now have dogs. A lot of people with dogs want to have a coffee somewhere and take their dogs. By banning access to dogs, a cafe will lose potential customers. I’m sure a lot of cafes haven’t taken the decision to let them in lightly. They will have seen a business need and acted on it.

Um, no clue... Boaters maybe? Golfers? Horse riders?

Or, IDK... dog walkers?

Most of the time, it’s not just that I’ve taken the dog for a visit to a cafe. If we aren’t going on a walk, and just go for a coffee somewhere local, we go minus the dog. But for example, we will drive somewhere (live in a town, so drive to somewhere with walks) to go for a walk, for the benefit of us (getting exercise), and also exercising the dog. Whilst on the walk, we sometimes fancy a coffee and snack, so obviously have to find somewhere on the walk that allows a dog. It’s just that simple.

right, and the XL bullys that have now been thankfully been banned. Amazing, kind and far better than humans.

To be fair @Myfabby it was a bit of a daft question one which has been answered many times on the thread.

If I walk past a cafe with my dog and get tempted by the smell of a bacon butty I'm not gonna walk my dog home and come back to buy a butty. I'm just going to make a butty when I get home but if the dog is allowed in with me...

Ditto days out. We always look for dog-friendly pubs when we're going out for a day with the dog. If we can't find one we don't go anyway but leave the dog we either go elsewhere or we take a picnic.

If you have a business in an area where there are a lot of dogs eg popular walking spots it makes financial sense to allow dogs. If you don't like it, go elsewhere or have a picnic instead. No one is forcing anyone to eat in cafes and pubs that allow dogs. You can't demand businesses lower their profit margins to suit you.

I find the smell of dogs qukte nauseating especially if there is any hint of damp on dog or establishment .each to their own but yes I avoid places with dogs purely due to the smell of them

I just hope you never go blind.

If you don’t like dogs or dogs being inside cafes then just leave and go somewhere else. It’s not really an issue.

Cafes should charge customers a typical amount if they bring a dog into the cafe. They are in business to make a profit. Dogs don’t make them any money,

If the cafe does not allow dogs, then the dog owner will go elsewhere. They will have lost that custom. Simple.

Also, some cafes have a dog menu.

Have you noticed the world we live in now? A lot of people are self entitled and just not pleasant human beings. Wars everywhere. Hate everywhere. Just twatty people with twatty attitudes. Or maybe being in my 50s I’m just weary and intolerant of people and their bullshit. I’ve never met a twatty dog (unless they’ve been looked after by twatty people)

But dogs don’t take a seat. Two people with a dog will still need just a table for two, with or without a dog.

I live very close to a popular walking route frequently used by dog owners. When our dog was alive we took him there almost daily. Along the route is a lovely cafe. It’s generally packed out, dogs are not allowed. They provide outdoor seating and dog treats / water bowls, but no dogs inside.

Humans aren’t that great. We’re killing the planet, we have wars, some humans are paedophiles/murderers/robbers etc.

Dogs work for humans tirelessly helping to stop humans from drug smuggling and blowing each other up. They work as assistance dogs, guide dogs, police dogs, army dogs, the list goes on.

Kangaboo · 25/11/2023 23:48

@Livelovebehappy just to clarify I wasn’t saying that about you personally, that sounds like normal dog ownership, I was referring to the people I know who would either take their dog along or refuse to go themselves because they won’t/can’t leave the dog at home. Although some have such neurotic dogs they wouldn’t attempt to go to a cafe anyway!

I’ve been in places where dogs are indeed on seats, sprawled out in the floor and as others on here have pointed out, they won’t go in where dogs are allowed.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 25/11/2023 23:52

I’d rather be in a cafe full of dogs than full of people!

Never seen a dog sitting on a seat. Can’t imagine there are many that would actually be able to sit comfortably on a seat. Plus responsible dog owners would know it’s a no-no to allow a dogs muddy paws on a seat, where a person might be sitting later. I think you’re slightly exaggerating the situation here.

Customers wanting to bring dogs in must out number customers who won't go in because dogs are present or most cafes wouldn't have dog friendly rules. They want to make money at the end of the day.

Maybe just stay home with your dog and make yourself a coffee.

Whattodowithit88 · 25/11/2023 23:54

Went into a cafe for lunch. It had been raining 15 minutes before hand, the place reeked of wet dog, it was disgusting!! Walked straight back out and went to another place. I love dogs, have one myself but no one wants to pay to eat whilst smelling foul wet dog!!

Why would I do that? It's not me that has the problem 🙃
