I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

Why on earth would you be in Starsucks! They have been boycotted due to funding genocide and apartheid in Palestine. Keep out of these lowlife places

SheTookChances · 25/11/2023 22:36

I like that dogs are allowed in cafes and shops, it’s lovely to be able to pop in after a walk with ours. In our local cafe, there’s a dog menu and they get free treats and the cafe owners make a fuss of all the dogs. 😊

This

Agree. Especially whingeing people.

It's acceptable because the business owners deem it so. I genuinely do not get why that is so hard for people to grasp.

It isn’t hard to grasp. But just because cafes have started to allow dogs in doesn’t mean it is acceptable for many people or that people have to like it and not complain.

Did the people who don’t want dogs in cafes get a say in this? No. It just seemed to happen overnight and has now become the status quo. Most people are generally polite and don’t complain but if they’re anything like me will be sitting there with gritted teeth and having their meal slightly spoiled because there’s a smelly mutt panting and scratching next to them.

Is that so hard to grasp?

Well this makes no sense. Of course ‘the people’ didn’t get a say. It’s entirely upto business owners who they allow. They’re not going to take it to vote with the general public, are they?🤣 it’s not difficult to grasp that if you own a business, you make the rules.

You can either go to a cafe where dogs are allowed or go to one that doesn’t allow them.

CharlieBoo · 25/11/2023 22:42

I love dogs!! They are better than people! However I agree with the OP! There was one in John Lewis today walking around the mens section. When was this a thing? Guide dogs yes but this was just someone’s pet. Also in London a couple of weeks ago a guy picked his dog up and walked into Selfridges with it.. I just wouldn’t..

Agree also in cafes .. I would never bring my dog because he’s a pain in the arse.. so leave at home, unless it’s a v cute puppy.. then please bring it x

jemenfous37 · 25/11/2023 22:07

@Begsthequestion Of course not. You are being obtuse. People have put their food into the same space where a child's nappy clad bottom has been

Are you seriously saying that having a small child sat in a shopping trolley is less hygienic than a dog sat at a dinner table?

When did people get so strange.

Also, the cats in a cat cafe will be residents. Not visitors who have been out in the mud and rain before putting their paws up on the table and begging for food from other customers.

You mean the cats live in the cafe??

ssd · 25/11/2023 22:45

Yes, bit rank isn't it. Because animals don't really belong in cafes.

Screamingabdabz · 25/11/2023 18:51

One dog in an establishment serving food or dog is too many.

A dog serving food ? Now that would be really lovely ☺️

Lilacdressinggown · 25/11/2023 19:24

I would not go into that cafe. Really unhygienic.

How so? They aren’t making the food or bringing your drinks.

They are sat in the same places that people who don’t was their hand ps after going to the loo, are sitting on the same fabric that thousands of others have sat on or wiped down with a cloth that does the whole cafe/ pub or restaurant.
And staff are just normal minimum wage people often students . Unlikely that many will be anally retentive attentive clean freaks.

ApolloandDaphne · 25/11/2023 18:52

The more dogs the better. They are mostly better than people imo.

I don't know who you've been hanging out. Very worrying.

Kangaboo · 25/11/2023 22:49

I like dogs but totally agree some of the owners treat them like children now. Our dog certainly didn’t come out for social occasions with us when I was growing up.

jemenfous37 · 25/11/2023 22:56

@Begsthequestion I didn't mention a dinner table, and of course, that is a ridiculous notion. I was talking zbout the principle of hygiene and food

Orangesandlemonsq · 25/11/2023 22:56

There was one in Cote Brasserie Oxford today, I cdnt believe it!

Yes we're talking about dogs in cafes. Welcome to the thread

Upwiththelark76 · 25/11/2023 23:00

I find the smell of dogs qukte nauseating especially if there is any hint of damp on dog or establishment .each to their own but yes I avoid places with dogs purely due to the smell of them

Livelovebehappy · 25/11/2023 23:09

Horrace · 25/11/2023 21:33

But the coffee shops and eateries are for paying humans to consume food and beverages. Not for paying dogs

Well clearly cafe owners can see that allowing dogs increases their takings, otherwise they wouldn’t do it. A bit like when pubs started creating soft play areas on their premises, to welcome children, because they saw that it brought the punters through the doors, because we’re now a generation of being family focused. At the end of the day, if a cafe can get more people in by allowing dogs, then it makes sense to them. A lot of Lake District eateries would be practically empty if they didn’t allow dogs.

ChateauMargaux · 25/11/2023 23:09

There are nearly 2 and a half times as many dogs in the UK than there were in 1970, while the human population has only increased by 20%.. so there was one dog for every 12 humans, now there is one dog for every 6 humans..

but what has changed dramatically is that dogs are allowed everywhere.. this did not used to be the case.. dogs stayed at home, and barked. But only annoyed half the number of people and definetly didn't come into shops and cafés.

I don't like dogs and don't want to share my space with them. It is not a choice that I can freely make. I don't want to step in their poo in the park, smell them in shops or have them anywhere near me when I am drinkiing / eating.

Standproperly · 25/11/2023 23:11

In the 70s and 80s it was safe to leave dogs tied up outside shops and cafes but I wouldn’t do that these days as some bugger would steal them

Livelovebehappy · 25/11/2023 23:11

Kangaboo · 25/11/2023 22:49

And neither were children allowed to eat lunch in pubs with their parents. But times change. It’s business.

FloweryPumpkin1 · 25/11/2023 23:12

I'm a dog lover, and while I don't really have an issue with them being in cafes, it's a problem that they're allowed in every single cafe where we live. I get that it's a business decision, but it's really hard for people with allergies or who are scared/really don't like them. We have a lovely cafe in our village and last time I was there a dog pissed right in the middle of the floor. Everyone was grabbing their bags and lifting their feet as it spread (large dog and large piss). Plus we have a problem with aggressive dogs here. It would be nice to have somewhere where we know we can go for a coffee or lunch and know we're not going to encounter them- no issue at all with them being in some places, but it would be nice to be able to choose!

Copperoliverbear · 25/11/2023 23:14

It's better to be over run with dogs than anything else, miserable people is one.

IsabelleSE19 · 25/11/2023 23:20

Interesting to see this thread as I was in Caffè Nero today and had the unholy trinity of uncontrolled screaming toddler, two uncontrolled barking dogs and singing teenagers! (None of which were mine.) Was all a bit much, and what should have been a nice little treat for our family (we can't afford to go out loads) was kind of torture.

But to address the point of the thread, I don't mind dogs in cafes particularly but it's enraging when the owners don't take them out when they keep barking. Exactly the same with the parents of screaming kids too! Just have a bit of consideration 🙏

I don't mind miserable people. As long as they keep themselves to themselves and don't spread their misery to my table. I don't want to hear them, smell them or trip up over them.

you can't be comparing dogs to children. c'mon!

What additional business do you attract by letting in dogs?
