7 dogs in Starbucks today is too much

I turned around and walked out again, don’t get me started on dogs sniffing cups and plates of food whilst sat next to the owners.
What is the solution ?
Can’t dogs be left anymore?
AIBU to think dog separation cannot be so painful that dogs have to go everywhere!

What do you want them to use? Loo roll?

No, I don't want them there in the first place. Leave them at home

I’ve never seen a dog go into an eatery and pay. Have you?

Pretty sure my lurcher can cope with Apple Pay. His round next...

PoppyOrange · 25/11/2023 22:13

I love dogs but feel much the same about children!

Oh is it you that makes the rules?

I think she should. This is an excellent idea. I’m thinking about all of the pets I’ve known people have over the years;

  • Jackdaw
  • miner bird
  • tortoise
  • giant African snail
  • parrot
  • rabbits/mice/Guinea pigs etc
  • Snakes
  • cats
  • goats
  • donkeys
  • sheep
  • hens
could you imagine a mass day if direct action and everyone turns up with their pet. I’m having a lot of fun imagining it. My life sucks at the moment and this is cheering me up proper. Thanks Nanaof1 .

The more dogs the better. They are mostly better than people imo.

Love this comment

I did see a man with an owl on his shoulder in a pub in Glastonbury once.

Oh, shame on me, I totally forgot our aviary friends. Hawks, canaries, parrots, etc. all need to be allowed if dogs are allowed. I saw that a PP mentioned horses. Of course a horse should be allowed. Along with goats, pigs, chickens and any other pet that can be imagined. Well, it might be difficult to bring your pet fish in if they are not in water, and carrying in an aquarium could be awkward.

I am clicking YABU, because I am sick of the dog hating threads now. It's becoming tedious .. Not all dogs are bad, and neither are all dog owners.

Dink53975 · 25/11/2023 22:17

I’d rather be in a cafe full of dogs than one full of NCT groups with screaming children!!

Standproperly · 25/11/2023 22:18

Yellowtrouser · 25/11/2023 21:38

@Standproperly re dog pound on the island. Are the lots residents with dogs and it is them the cafe wants to attract?

Sorry, I don’t understand this?

Livingoncaffeine · 25/11/2023 22:20

Where we live is around a 30 min walk to the town centre. If I meet a friend in town for lunch I can walk the dog there, have lunch and walk back, then do something else with my day. Rather than having to walk there and back, and then go out for another walk with the dog. Obviously places allow dogs because it helps them attract more customers for whom it is convenient, like me. Our town is very dog friendly in general but I can think of at least four places that are dog free, and really good ones too, so there is always a choice.

TinklingToadstools · 25/11/2023 22:21

The staff probably enjoy the company of dogs more than the customers who are fond of complaining about anything and everything.
In the USA people walk around in shops with all types of "therapy" pets including an alligator.

FaryNuff · 25/11/2023 22:22

WinterWarmth · 25/11/2023 21:50

Didn’t there use to be food hygiene regulations whereby animals (except service dogs) weren’t allowed in premises selling food?

Has that gone to dogs too?

I quoted you to explain. Many people are passing their pets off as service or assistance dogs in the UK as there’s no formal register of training required for them. A lot of people ‘owner train’ them so basically anyone can walk into a shop/cafe/restaurant and claim their dog is an assistance/service animal. They need no documentation, no training records and the dogs don’t need to wear any sort of lead slips, harnesses etc identifying them as an assistance/service dog. As far as I know, assistance/service dogs aren’t allowed in kitchens but are allowed in serving areas.

I have dogs, I don’t feel the need to take them everywhere with me. A lot of dogs bought in lockdown now can’t be left as they’ve never been trained to be alone which is part of the problem.

Whiteday · 25/11/2023 22:23

Horrace · 25/11/2023 22:02

The question is, why do people feel the need to take their pets out with them. Do they take them to work also.
This is a genuine question.
I have animals and I leave them at home. Wouldn't dream of taking them anywhere with me.

I WFH, so she's at work with me, then we go out lunchtime to eat or have coffee.

Fannyannie · 25/11/2023 22:23

Dogs over screaming kids/babies every day. Thanks❣️

Cannot stand that piercing screaming the little darlings seem to do everywhere. Kid free but dog friendly would be perfect.

Can she be left on her own? The reason I’m asking as I know a few people who got dogs during lockdown and can’t leave them alone.

One dog in an establishment serving food or dog is too many.

Why?

You are quite welcome! Like you, I think it would be immensely amusing if everyone brought their pets on the same day/time. I am sure the dogs would respect the cats and the cats the rats and the hawks the bunnies. I mean, the more the merrier, and we do need to be fair. There are people who have pet alligators, tigers, monkeys and other assorted zoo animals too, so we need to be courteous to all. I would happily videotape the cacophony. It would be a day to remember. 😆😇😉

I think if a place allows dogs, they should have to allow any and all pets. Could make it interesting to see dogs, cats, rats, snakes, hamsters and lizards all "co-mingling" in cafes and pubs.

Actually, my sister has therapy ponies (American miniature horses - they’re just a bit larger than a Retriever) and they go all sorts of places….shops, coffee shops, railway stations…. It’s all part of their training so that they can be taken indoors to care homes, hospitals and schools and take it (literally) in their stride. If you’re discombobulated by a dog or two in Starbucks, I’d love to see how you’d deal with being up close and personal to one of them Grin

Whiteday · 25/11/2023 22:26

@FaryNuff yes she's fabulous on her own! We leave her if we can't take her, so some restaurants etc. but when we can take her we do.

I do work out of the house once a fortnight, no issue.

1990thatsme · 25/11/2023 22:28

Actually, I just remembered, our local hospital (big) has dogs too!!

They do ward rounds throughout, visiting patients and spreading joy to patients who are bored, scared, in pain.

I love having dogs everywhere and think it’s a positive thing that has changed in society post pandemic.

Littlelucas · 25/11/2023 22:30

It's acceptable because the business owners deem it so. I genuinely do not get why that is so hard for people to grasp.

It isn’t hard to grasp. But just because cafes have started to allow dogs in doesn’t mean it is acceptable for many people or that people have to like it and not complain.

Did the people who don’t want dogs in cafes get a say in this? No. It just seemed to happen overnight and has now become the status quo. Most people are generally polite and don’t complain but if they’re anything like me will be sitting there with gritted teeth and having their meal slightly spoiled because there’s a smelly mutt panting and scratching next to them.

Is that so hard to grasp?

Actually I think the same, however the dog owners should prevent their dogs from wandering to other people's tables.

Beachwalker66 · 25/11/2023 22:33

But if you don’t like it, what is the point in complaining? Just go somewhere that’s dog free.

Vote with your feet. Leave us animal lovers to it with our gorgeous smelly fur babies.

OK, I admit I used the term fur baby deliberately to rile up the dog haters 😂

I'd be up for this, no problem. I love horses. They don't lick their bums. And they smell divine
