To think that you shouldn’t choose to rent an upstairs 2 bed flat if you have 4 noisy kids

Just after your thoughts. We rent a ground floor flat, we expect to hear some of the usual sounds of upstairs neighbours such as footsteps, doors closing, washing machine, Hoover, the odd thud. Am absolutely fine with that.

A new couple moved into the flat upstairs, normal neighbour noises could be heard. No problem with that. Soon after they told me they had lied to our landlord and that it won’t just be the two of them, their 4 boys from the ages of 2 -11 would be coming over from their home country and living in that flat with them. Theirs is a 2 bedroom flat, no outside space, our flats are converted from 1 house. As she told me this she laughed and her exact words were oh you’ll know when they’ve arrived. Things are going to get very noisy!

Since the kids moved in the noise levels are ridiculous. Constant loud bangs, thuds, shouting, squealing, we can hear them running up and down their flat. It isn’t occasional. It’s all day every day as not all of them attend school.

I know kids make noise. On a couple of occasions I’ve knocked on and as nicely and politely as possible explained how it’s impacting us. For example when my child was crying and couldn’t go to sleep at bedtime because all the kids in the room above were jumping off the sofa onto the floor, our lampshade was swinging from the impact. At other times they’ve all been running and screeching so loud it sounds as though they are actually in our flat with us. The neighbours have then shrugged, argued back and said they’d try to keep the noise down but there’s nothing they can do.

I don’t know what we can do other than move out ourselves, but with the housing crisis the way it is, it wouldn’t be easy. I feel angry that they lied to get the tenancy and moved the family in knowing that it would disturb us and make our lives difficult.

Would any of you say I’m justified in feeling this way, any practical advice you’d give?

Go for a lie down dear.

please Don’t ring 101. This is why the police are never available for, you know, crime.

ring the council and report to them. And speak to the landlord.

LBFseBrom · 27/11/2023 20:27

To the person who suggested I read the first post, I did read it but by the time I got through this thread I had forgotten the bit where the op said the people told her they had lied to the landlord about having children.

Gosh, they must have trusted the op to tell her that, I doubt most would. They must also have been desperate for somewhere reasonably decent to live to go that far.

It is a pity the children's noise upsets the op but it cannot be all the time. They are not old enough to be having noisy parties until the early hours and the two eldest are at school.

We are not there so cannot really judge. Everyone has different tolerance levels.

I wouldn't report them to the landlord, that would be mean. I'd put up with it and maybe get to know them a bit better. I doubt they intend to stay in that flat forever.

PinotViogner · 27/11/2023 20:43

It is wild that so many people are so open to believing that this woman just told the OP, who she'd just met, that she was doing something legally suspect 🤔

As if people who've just moved to a new area, country even, will just immediately trust their neighbour with info like that 😂

PinotViogner · 27/11/2023 20:49

@Tessabelle74 and yet not a one half as bothered and emotional as any of yours 😂 or creepy for that matter...

FrenchToastLover · 27/11/2023 20:58

Who the fuck uses hashtags as a way to be smarmy in 2023 🤦🏼‍♀️🤣

Oh my gosh right!! How are the people on here defending this woman so gullible? Who on earth would show their arse like that? Oh yes we've just met so let me confess this very legally dodgy thing that I'm doing, thanks for listening total stranger 😆

Of all the things that didn't happen, this didn't happen the most! Absolute troll.

@PinotViogner I dont think she had her nap 😴😂

Zooeyzo · 27/11/2023 22:40

@shatteredmama Just report to the landlord. A lot of Local authorities have strict rules about the number of people living in a property- the councils come out to inspect as well.
If the couple lied to their landlord about kids then it's their own doing if they're evicted.

lollipoprainbow · 27/11/2023 22:40

@FrenchToastLover @PinotViogner grow up

Search her handle, things seem a bit miserable for her based on her threads so continuously being a dick to strangers online seems like her cope. Let her prattle on 😊🤷🏻‍♀️

If this is aimed at me, I've not started a thread in a good 6+ months 🤣 you and your little friend calling people names however, seem quite content to be dicks to strangers online so at least I'm in good company, cheers! 🤣

JFT · 27/11/2023 23:32

Uh why are people on MN always accusing the OP of starting other threads and then it turns out they didn't. It's a pattern!

FrenchToastLover · 27/11/2023 23:32

@Tessabelle74 I was talking about the other xenophobe but go off 👍🏼

Ops only other thread is one where she's complaining about a teacher not blindly believing everything her son alleged about another child in school.

Then maybe be less cryptic? The person you commented about re. the hash tags was me, clearly. If you're going to make smart remarks, maybe target them so we all know which strangers you're being dicks on the internet about?

lollipoprainbow · 27/11/2023 23:39

You think the comment that had someone else tagged in it was about you? That's some main character syndrome right there 😂

They do need to grow up, you're correct! Imagine 2 strangers coming together like that to troll another stranger yet claiming that the other stranger has a miserable life thats why THEY do it. They need a mirror

Turkey98 · 28/11/2023 00:54

Sounds just like normal noise for a large family - if you need peace and quiet, you shouldn't choose to live in a flat; you need to be comfortable with noise. Normal noise includes people making noise, and children being children. Sounds like you may need a detached property, and just have been lucky to have neighbours to your liking up to now.

I'm not sure why all these comments on overcrowding are coming from - the flat could house many more people. children under 10 aren't considered (and are ignored as they grow) and a two bed, one sitting room flat would be generally deemed suitable for 6 adults to live in.

You have the wrong expectations, they are acting perfectly normally.
