To not put the toaster in the cupboard?!

Obviously not a serious topic but…

I keep my toaster on the side in the kitchen. I regularly visit my brother and sister in law and they keep theirs in a low cupboard. I find this insane. Like me they use it daily (if not multiple times a day) and they’re forever getting it out and putting it back. Their kitchen is not tiny or anything, it’s probably larger than mine.
I just want to know… is this normal and am I a weirdo for having my toaster out all the time?!

YABU - I keep my toaster in a cupboard
YANBU - what is this lunacy, my toaster is out on the side!

It just depends how you were raised Grin

ShirleyPhallus · 24/11/2023 15:12

I do, but I hate clutter on countertops. Use it maybe once a day so not a huge deal.

ProvisionsOnTheDock · 24/11/2023 15:14

My toaster lives on the work surface. Toast is my favourite thing in the world so I wouldn't want to put any additional faff between it and me.

Coconutter24 · 24/11/2023 15:15

I always used to keep my toaster in a cupboard to keep sides clear but then like 6 year ago I thought wtf am I doing haha so now keep it on the sides

Protestants put the toaster in a cupboard, catholics keep it on the countertop.

Are you a Catholic and sil a protestant who is imposing her protestant traditions on your dB?

CurlewKate · 24/11/2023 15:17

My ds once put ours on the wrong shelf after late night beans on toast then went camping and therefore out of touch the next morning and the toaster was lost for several days.

sweetpickle23 · 24/11/2023 15:17

I would think this is a fire hazard! You're not even really meant to position them under cupboards because of the build up of heat. I wouldn't do this!

I think they take it out of the cupboard to use it...

I put mine away. I hate clutter on the counters,

Verified by a sample of one lapsed Catholic.

I don’t use it below a cupboard… it’s open above the toaster.

This only works in NI, though, as I know south of the border Church of Ireland people who don’t hide their toasters, and when I lived in England, we had English Catholic neighbours who kept, not only their toaster but their kettle and their fruit bowl, in a cupboard.

MaliciaKeys · 24/11/2023 15:21

My toaster coordinates beautifully with my kettle, airfryer and slow cooker. It stays out.

Evaka · 24/11/2023 15:22

I'm picturing them all dancing together.

That is true. I found it very amusing that my very catholic fil kept it in the cupboard.

CeruleanSal · 24/11/2023 15:23

Yes! My toaster matches my kettle. They’re the only two things that really stay out because tea and toast are always on the go!

Very interested in this Protestant-catholic Irish angle to the debate!

I don't know if it is or not but that was one of the classic differences between catholics and Protestants on the blackboard in Derry Girls.

I was brought up catholic, now an atheist, and my toaster is on the counter, as is that of my catholic parents.

I understand the desire to keep worktops free of stuff, so I can see why someone might want to put their toaster away, but if they use it at least once a day and often more, it does seem a bit odd.

Each to their own - I mean, wherever someone chooses to stow their own toaster, it doesn't affect me in the slightest - but this would certainly not be my preferred modus operandi. My own toaster is very much out and proud.

Do they put their kettle away in the cupboard after each use as well? I think I can just about get my head round the toaster thing as weird-but-acceptable, but if someone put their kettle away after each cup of tea, I would assume they were a psychopath.

I'm now imagining your brother and SIL putting everything away, all the time. Placing their bedside lamps in a drawer each night after switching them off. Rolling up the doormat for storage every evening. Popping the toilet roll back in the bathroom cabinet after every wee.

My current ones match. It makes me feel very grown up to have them matching.

WildCherryBlossom · 24/11/2023 15:26

I don't have a toaster at all but when I did... my flat mate (Catholic European, not Irish) put it away. I kept leaving it out and it kept disappearing (not always into the same cupboard đŸ¤¯).

I can't be bothered with them any more. Seldom eat toast. If I want to eat toast I put bread under the grill. Simples.

And a special cupboard for the children.
