Of 745,000 people a year isn’t what the 17 million people who voted for Brexit in 2016 thought they were voting for?

YABU = Yes, this is what Leave supporters voted for.

YANBI = No, they didn’t vote for this.

But what does a sensible conversation look like, who would have it, how would we decide the outcome, who enforces that.

i just don't see how, with (potentially) a year to go, Labour should even be mentioned.

People seem quite certain Labour will be in. I’d say it’s a good idea to look at how they’ll deal with migration pressures.

The idea you can’t mention a potential party is a bit head in the sand.

Look at how quickly we are seeing events emerge, and the general societal and political landscape change. If we have lax border policies for five years against rising right with more stringent measures in many other countries, we will find it very difficult.

This is a Tory problem, which they have created, that is where the spotlight should be.
Hilarious Braverman is criticising! who the heck does she think has been HS for the last year?

We ve poss another year to go, we certainly don't need another 3/4m people coming into the UK.

Labour can be quizzed when the next GE is announced but of course you can mention it, i'm not the MN Police!!!

Crikeyalmighty · 24/11/2023 10:56

@thewooster same issue here in Bath. The thing is they have had to go after the non EU international students because the EU ones aren't coming anymore in the numbers they did- and the fees demanded are the things propping the Unis up

I’d want people to acknowledge climate pressures, mass migration and what border control should be.

It’s why you’re seeing political outcomes across the EU

I’m not really focusing on visas as much as the huge incoming issue that will get more problematic.

I mean waiting until the GE is announced as some sort of starting block, well you can, but it’s an arbitrary line and we may as well talk about the next five years.

We’re going to be see even more destabilising events more quickly.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/11/2023 11:07

I think a biggie was that being in the EU we had lots of younger 'immigrants' who came for maybe a year or two - that's very different to huge amounts of legal migration by whole families from developing country's- there was a Pakistani medical consultant on James o Brien the other week and he was very blunt in saying that it no way compensated for all the EU people they had lost as the level of training was very different and it took a very long time to get people almost 'retrained' - it's not like bringing in Americans , kiwis or Australians (very few of who are applying to come here)

Hi crikey, one of the unis here still has French , Swedes, Danes and German exchange students who come for a year or a semester. They stay in the housing near my daughter and another lot is due in Jan. My daughter loves mingling with them and has made some good mates.

But we have always had an influx of Asian students going back to about 2005 when they started coming en masse. I was told it was when the unis 'became businesses' whatever that means!

The irony of anti-immigration posters saying they plan to emigrate.🙄

A friend's father is an out and racist and voted for Brexit to stop "all the bloody foreigners" from coming over here.

Last year he sold his massive house on the south coast and bought a one-bed flat, where he stays when he visits from his home in Spain, where he is now officially resident.

He's not at all amused when friend teases him about being an immigrant in Spain. It's completely different, apparently.

Opinion pollsters and those who analyses the results do indeed seem quite certain, you are correct.

You’ll still see huge issues incoming as I said in pp

Polls won’t help you with reality of mass migration.

Especially if other countries go further right and we are the most lax under Labour.

We will struggle even more as a comparatively attractive and easy place for asylum.

Asylum seekers make up a very small proportion - less than 10% of the net migrants to the UK. It would be easy enough for the UK to open up more safe routes for them to come here and reduce the amount of net migration at the same time.
For some reason that I can't fathom the current government aren't interested in doing this, instead they like to demonise desperate people fleeing persecution whilst welcoming a range of other migrants.

The reality is that our welfare system is too generous. Hunt should have raised the limit before income tax is payable and reduced benefits so that more unemployed people get a job, even if it means being a carer or picking fruit.

Do you really think that £84.80pw is too much for a single person to live on and pay all their bills? Because that's how much they get, unless they're very unwell/disabled.

If they're renting, they'll get more, but they'll be worse off because the amount they get towards their rent is invariably a lot less than they'll be paying. Even Hunt recognises this, which is why he's raising the local housing allowances, which have been frozen for 4 years.

Sadly the current Prime Minister announced in September measures to increase climate change and the consequent migration.

EasternStandard · 24/11/2023 11:52

One big problem is people can’t envisage a few years on when we really see social cohesion strain

Although the speed at which things are happening in the EU it looks like it could be quite fast

Mn has generally been very against any discussion on borders or immigration but there’s another thread with 80% yanbu for a control type question

So it seems a minority now are more averse to discussion, or are head in the sand over it

HannibalHeyes · 24/11/2023 12:10

But you seem to be entirely head-in-the-sand about the fact that it is this Tory government that has cause the current issues, and are desperate to blame Labour for issues that have only arisen in your own head!

Fififafa · 24/11/2023 12:15

@LakieLady Oh don’t forget he isn’t an immigrant, he’s an expat don’t you know!

EasternStandard · 24/11/2023 12:15

🤷‍♂️ I’ve been interested in climate pressures and mass migration a while

I haven’t ’blamed Labour’ that’s just more nonsense. I’m looking at what’s to come and how we’ll cope with it.

There’s a few who still attack or whatever based on a party loyalty (upset about Labour blah blah) but generally I’m noticing a shift on here.

People can discuss it and the majority view is shifting. I’m glad to see it. It’s the biggest thing our dc will face so I’d prefer people discuss it.

HannibalHeyes · 24/11/2023 12:27

I'm not a Labour fan by any stretch of the imagination, but you are constantly harping on about what Labour might do, whilst ignoring the masses of evidence that show the blatant destruction being caused by the current government.

One might almost suspect you were a shill...

I haven’t even said what they will do 🤷‍♂️You are probably a shill for Labour who knows. I imagine there are a few.

My main point is it’s a good idea to look forward as we’re about to see huge pressures increase

Notice what’s happening in the EU and try to envisage how we’ll be in a few years

And think about societal cohesion when mass migration really picks up

Labour is about the least interesting part of it, it’s you and others who care more about their fate

I’m more interested in sorting things for dc as they get older

You have reminded how much you Labour lot insult and attack though so it hasn’t completely stopped. We still have you 😀

HannibalHeyes · 24/11/2023 12:39

Ooh, great comeback! "I'm not a shill, you are!"

I've already said, I'm not a fan of Labour, but if a Labour government will get rid of this bunch of criminals, it's a good start.

Why aren't you worried about what the Tories might do about these impending crises? Particularly given that they are currently causing them in the first place!

That is what sounds like a shill...

Well are you? Maybe who knows. I don’t really care tbh but I look at posts like yours crying out for your party rather than acknowledging the biggest incoming issue your dc are likely to see and I find that strange

I don’t get that, but then the Labour posters bizarrely angry when not everyone votes as they do or doesn’t spend mn rhapsodising on Labour being the answer to all issues

It still looks like misplaced weighting to me.

Atm I’m looking for overall system change as I don’t think the current set up will cope with the strain, we’ll see if anyone offers it
