Laurence Fox libel trial

newnamethanks · 22/11/2023 18:07

Laurence Fox has been sued for libel by two people he described as paedophiles in a twitter spat. They described LF as racist. Trial began today, suing and counter-suing. Mr Fox arrived with his - written thus (daily mail) in single quotes - 'girlfriend'. Odd description.

Funniest thing I read today was that he was been considered for a role in Succession until he called someone a paedophile. Seems unlikely he’d be considered (seriously) for such a role.

I hadn’t heard this but it would be quite clever casting given the characters are all meant to be vile

I've just read his twitter ramble. The kindest interpretation is that he isn't very well.

I just googled it and goodness me… is he… calling for a revolution of white people??? Wtaf? He does not seem to be in his right mind

He's the living embodiment of the quote "When you're accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression."

SinnerBoy · 30/01/2024 10:29

Yeah Laurence, I agree that you're totally not racisty.

https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2024/jan/29/laurence-fox-loses-libel-battle-with-twitter-x-users-he-called-paedophiles

Under cross-examination, Fox suggested there were contexts in which the phrase “I hate black people” was not racist. He said: “If a man is just released from a Ugandan jail where he’s been gang-raped by several men and he walks out and he goes: ‘I hate black people’, it’s a sort of understandable response.”

Asked whether it was racist to say “Black people in the UK should go home”, Fox replied: “Depends on what context.”

I really wonder what his black girlfriend thinks about this 🤔

‘Funniest thing I read today was that he was been considered for a role in Succession until he called someone a paedophile. Seems unlikely he’d be considered (seriously) for such a role.’

That’s come from him- to be in Succession - the multi award winning show that features some of the worlds best actors at their very best- you’d need to be a very, very good actor.
i’ve seen more convincing acting from 6 year olds in the school Nativity than anything Lozza’s ever done.
In fact, this role as ‘poor, downtrodden privileged white chap’ as about as convincing as it gets.

SinnerBoy · 30/01/2024 11:51

He's wanking on that the judge wouldn't define the word racist, he may not actually be one, but he's used loads of words and phrases, publicly, which are considered by most people to be racist.

Halllooo · 30/01/2024 12:50

‘but he's used loads of words and phrases, publicly, which are considered by most people to be racist.’

if it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck…

I really don't think he's well.

I agree with you. I wish he had someone sensible close to him who could get him to see his behaviour as abnormal and encourage him to seek help. I can't imagine it would be easy to get him to accept he needs help. I hope someone is trying though.

First klopp, then trump, now this.

What a great fucking week it's been

Marina is never one to avoid kicking a man who's down:

Did some randos calling him a “racist” on the platform formerly known as Twitter cost Laurence Fox his acting career? No, suggests a judgement from the high court, where a judge also found the actor turned thought leader to have defamed said randos by calling them “paedophiles”.

😃

RafaistheKingofClay · 30/01/2024 19:41

Just had a look at his Twitter feed. He’s not taking this well is he?

Not sure doubling down is a wise tactic.

newnamethanks · 01/02/2024 11:01

'I'm getting a wad of cash for this game. . . It's better to be hated and rich than hated and recently fired from Asda"
A quote from an email sent by Mr Fox during the time he complains he couldn't pay a mortgage, so badly had his name been traduced. So, not ill then.just another mercenary for hire in the culture wars. His price? £250k per annum courtesy of Hosking via Reclaim. See today's Guardian article by Crystal, one of the defendants jn ,the libel trial. I hope the libel award clears his bank account and bankrupts him.

And, to add to the merriment, an LBC reporter has been looking into Reclaim funding. It was in the latter hour of the James O'Brien show. It was illuminating, entertaining and informative. Anyone interested will find it on the LBC website.its a very odd set up.

Cornettoninja · 04/02/2024 17:14

I caught that segment on LBC @newnamethanks. props to that reporter for digging into the antics at the reclaim office.

CormorantStrikesBack · 04/02/2024 17:20

Where are they saying the funding has come from?

Cornettoninja · 04/02/2024 17:21

Off the top of my head I’m pretty sure they did name names but I can’t remember who.

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/02/2024 20:07

Watching Free Speech Nation on GB News where the commentator has described Lozza calling people paedophiles as "rhetorical".🙄

No GBN, calling someone a "paedophile" is an accusation. And if you can't provide evidence, it's libellous. Freedom of Speech is not the freedom to accuse innocent people of sexually abusing children.

newnamethanks · 04/02/2024 22:48

Rhetorical? Hysterical and malicious is the correct terminology in Fox's case.

GBnews is more or less the Shady Pines retirement home for post-andropausal, attention-seeking male frothers.

newnamethanks · 25/04/2024 17:37

£138,000 libel award. Guess Fox will have to pay costs too. Good. I expect Hoskins will save him so he doesn't have to sell the house like Katie Hopkins. Good result.

OP posts:
kirinm · 25/04/2024 17:45

It was £180k - £90k each. I assume he is liable for costs. Can't wait to see what those are!
