newnamethanks · 22/11/2023 18:07

Laurence Fox has been sued for libel by two people he described as paedophiles in a twitter spat. They described LF as racist. Trial began today, suing and counter-suing. Mr Fox arrived with his - written thus (daily mail) in single quotes - 'girlfriend'. Odd description.

The discussion was about Megan Markle. The lady thought it was racism that was causing the press to go against Megan.
Just because she said this it doesn't mean it's a fact.
LF disagreed with her statement. He is entitled to do that. He does not have to be black to agree or disagree.
The lady then uses the fact that he is white as a reason that she is worried about him commenting/giving his opinion on this.

She was responding this comment from LF

"Britain is the most tolerant, lovely country in Europe’, ‘It’s so easy to throw the card of racism at everybody and it’s really starting to get boring now."

That is the comment that worried her. Not that Megan Markle has, or had not, faced racism. Or that he was giving an opinion. Her worry was a response to him saying that Britain is the most tolerant lovely country in Europe.

@TheOtherSideOfTheStory I haven't got involved in the Swastika discussion. As I said I don't know enough about what was posted to have an opinion on it.

Is it appropriate, at any time, or for any reason, to post a swastika? Simple yes or no answer is all that is needed.

newnamethanks · 29/11/2023 17:45

And it looks like he's been giving tuition to some posters. It's tiresome and repetitive.

It was racist. She used the colour of his skin as a reason to shut his opinion down.

No she didn’t.

i am not Australian. If there was a conversation about difficulties of being Australian I would not join in and say well I think you have a nice country what are you talking about. Because how could I know?? He can’t know if there is racism in this country because he won’t come up against it on a daily basis.

pointythings · 29/11/2023 17:50

@Delightfuldays could you be so kind as to give me some circumstances when it is appropriate to use the image of a swastika to make your point?

Hint: There is a right answer. Five letters. Begins with 'N'.

CormorantStrikesBack · 29/11/2023 17:50

Her worry was a response to him saying that Britain is the most tolerant lovely country in Europe.

but can’t you see that if you are white and male you might think it’s a tolerant country. But that actually you have no idea about the intolerance faced by others.

@Myfabby you don't need to get rude. Just have a discussion.

And for some reason you don't care to find out? I wonder why.

TheOtherSideOfTheStory · 29/11/2023 17:55

monsteramunch · 29/11/2023 17:25

Any thoughts on this? I'm curious as I wonder if you really would have the same reaction if it was sexism, not racism, that was the topic.

Something tells me you won't get an answer to this.

When you are discussing symmetry. Because a swastika is quite unusual in that it has rotational symmetry but not mirror symmetry.

I guess this is quite tongue in cheek, but you still wouldn't post a swastika on your twitter feed to illustrate rotational symmetry because everyone knows how offensive it is. And most people value their own reputations and careers, even if they don't care about other people's feelings.

You are correct I wouldn't post such on my twitter feed, but then I don't twit.

I'm not getting into the whole discussion about the swastika. I don't know what he posted it for and in it what context so I can't comment on it.
I know you want to pin me down on something regarding this. As I said I can't comment on it as I don't know the context. As I said previously if he has posted it in support of the Nazi's or anything to support them then it is disgusting.

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 18:07

@TheOtherSideOfTheStory because that's a whole other discussion.
What do you mean you wonder why? What are you trying to imply?

BettyBakesCakes · 29/11/2023 18:09

I wonder who they will get to play LF in next years tv dramatisation of the trial....

I’m going to hazard a guess that if LF auditioned for the role someone else would beat him to it! 😂

he can play himself- he plays obnoxious, misogynistic, racist, entitled, privileged white school boy very well 😂

He doesn't agree with pride month, or the campaign for equal rights. So he made a swastika out of pride flags.

You're not that obtuse. So let's have a straight answer: do you think there is any situation when it is acceptable to post a swastika on social media to illustrate a point you are making? Simple yes or no will do.

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 18:23

@monsteramunch if a woman was saying that Markle was being treated badly by the press because she was a woman.
I would disagree with that as well.

A man can disagree with it as well. A man is allowed an opinion.
Just because you 'feel' something doesn't mean it's true. I wouldn't shout down a man's opinion on sexism just because he is a man. I would listen to what he had to say and discuss rather than use the fact that he is a man against him.

If you are talking about Nazi's and doing a project on symbols then yes maybe you would show a Nazi symbol to demonstrate what the symbol was.
But if you are using the symbol in support of a right group or in any form of hate then that is disgusting.
But as I keep saying I don't know what context this symbol has been used.

Your listen? Rather than interrupt?

Maybe Laurence Fox should have tried that.

Yes a man can have an opinion. And a woman can then say his opinion isn’t valid because he has no lived experience. They can disagree over that. However it would not make her sexist for saying this.
