Laurence Fox libel trial

newnamethanks · 22/11/2023 18:07

Laurence Fox has been sued for libel by two people he described as paedophiles in a twitter spat. They described LF as racist. Trial began today, suing and counter-suing. Mr Fox arrived with his - written thus (daily mail) in single quotes - 'girlfriend'. Odd description.

@justteanbiscuits thanks for reposting the quote and showing quite clearly she does say she is worried and uses his skin colour as a reason

She's worried about his comment. His comment was that he didn't think racism is a big issue in the UK. She's worried that he can't know this, because he is white and privileged and therefore has not experienced the prejudice and discrimination that is faced by people of colour.

I would be worried if a man stated that there is no problem with sexual violence in this country. Because, as a man, he wouldn't have grown up with catcalling, flashing, unwanted touching and sexual assaults. That wouldn't make me a sexist.

She was worried about him assuming he knows what it’s like to be black, given that he is white.

But you knew that.

Others have answered better than I have.

I will ask you again, as I have before. Do you think a privileged male can understand what it is like being a woman and the things women are subjected to? Do you think a trans woman can have the same level of understanding of what it is to be a woman? Or, would a man claiming to know what it is to be a woman worry you?

He 'interrupted' her because she was telling him she was 'worried' about him having an opinion because of the colour of his skin.
Most people would interrupt if someone was using your skin colour as a reason to be 'worried' about your opinions.

Sensible, reasonable people on a literal discussion show would allow someone to finish their sentence rather than interrupting them a few words in...

It shows a certain level of entitlement to feel it's appropriate to interrupt people after just a few words rather than waiting for them to finish their sentence.

CormorantStrikesBack · 29/11/2023 16:51

That woman fromQT really needs to sue him for calling her racist. Because what she said was not racist. She was correctly pointing out a privileged white person can’t understand /doesn’t have experience of racism.

Lilacanemone · 22/11/2023 18:51

If he loses he should sue them for libel for calling him a racist. The people suing are happy enough to call people unfounded names but get upset when the same is done to them.

Problem is, he IS A RACIST and they ARE NOT PAEDOS!

hear hear!

entitlement borne from white male privilege. They can't be challenged and by a black woman too? How bloody dare she?!

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 16:59

The discussion was about Megan Markle. The lady thought it was racism that was causing the press to go against Megan.
Just because she said this it doesn't mean it's a fact.
LF disagreed with her statement. He is entitled to do that. He does not have to be black to agree or disagree.
The lady then uses the fact that he is white as a reason that she is worried about him commenting/giving his opinion on this.

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 17:04

@Myfabby seriously because he interrupted her he is now using his white male privilege.
Then trying to suggest that it is because she is a black woman that he has done this.
Wow.

But what she was challenging was his assertion that there isn't a problem with racism in Britain.

It was racist. She used the colour of his skin as a reason to shut his opinion down.

No, she didn't. This is a very deliberate obtuseness. He said racism isn't a problem in this country, she pointed out he can't know that because he wouldn't experience it because he is white and privileged. It's beyond ridiculous to call her racist because if this.

And I note you have tried to drop the swastika discussion as you've realised that's indefensible as well, so you're clinging to this imagining that you have a point.

We all see through her.

@Delightfuldays You better quit whilst you are ahead and use your energy to set up a gofund me for your beloved LF. He's in the hole for legal fees to the tune of £200k right now and with no job prospects, can't get a mortgage, lost the role of Batman😂😂

Oh no, I cannot find my tiny violin, it's too small for human eyes to detect 😂

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 17:15

No he didn't say racism wasn't a problem. He said it is easy to throw the race card at everybody.
That is his opinion.
A lot of white people have been falsely accused of racism.

He feels that is the case.
The lady on the Jeremy Vine show said he was racist and then she apologised because she couldn't back up what she had said. So that is his experience.

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 17:16

@Myfabby you don't need to get rude. Just have a discussion.

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 17:17

@TheOtherSideOfTheStory I haven't got involved in the Swastika discussion. As I said I don't know enough about what was posted to have an opinion on it.

monsteramunch · 29/11/2023 17:19

@Delightfuldays

If a man told me that there isn't sexism in this country and that women play the 'sexist' card too often, and I said to him "what worries me about you saying that is that you are a male who has no experience of this", would you honestly say I was being sexist against him?

I've honestly never met someone who uses the phrase "the race card" who isn't, when the surface is scratched, someone with racist beliefs.

OK let's rephrase then.

If a man told me this is a lovely, tolerant country and that women play the 'sexist' card too often, and I said to him "what worries me about you saying that is that you are a male who has no experience of this", would you honestly say I was being sexist against him?

Delightfuldays · 29/11/2023 17:22

Any thoughts on this? I'm curious as I wonder if you really would have the same reaction if it was sexism, not racism, that was the topic.
