AIBU to ask for your real life Hyacinth Bucket quotes

Went to a Christmas fair with my mum at the weekend.

She spotted some Norwegian style Christmas napkins that she liked. Passed them to me and asked, "Are these 3 ply? I will not buy napkins that are less than 3 ply".

It really made me laugh and I wondered if others have Hyacinth style quotes from friends/family?

On MN posters get their arse handed to them if they dare to suggest (or mention that their child eats) any type of food that is remotely 'healthy' and not, say, a packet of Quavers and a Penguin. They're seen as bragging or lying, because surely all children turn their noses up at things like hummus and will only eat chips and toast.

Anyone else been here long enough to remember the green bean casserole at the playdate fiasco?

People are so weird sometimes. Most children surely have a mix of healthy and non healthy stuff. Mine have quavers and penguins too 🤷🏼‍♀️

I had to smile think of this thread earlier today. I was watching Sky news when Kemi Badenoch corrected Kay Burley on how to pronounce her name. Not Bad but Bay.

The entire series of keeping up appearances is on iplayer! Such a treat

The episode where Hyacinth pretends that some posh house is her sister Daisy's, then goes round the back and clambers over the garden wall in her flowery frock and heels, while the horrified owners look on, can still make me laugh now.

This is the one I've watched today! For me it's her facial expressions that are the best bit, from scorn to pursed lip disapproval to satisfaction back to scorn in one fell swoop, there's no one quite like her

To be fair, I think lots of us refer to their cars by the make, like “The Toyota needs a good wash” or “Do you remember that camping trip with the Panda?”.
I’ve called some of my cars by girls’ names. The last one was Paloma (Picasso).

Delusions of grandeur?

When I was married to my first husband we used to do this as it was just quicker but we would generally use the model rather than the make. So for us it was "We need to insure the Astra next month" "Ok, when is the Previa due?"

Not poncey (as reference by the cars concerned!) it was just easier.

That said, when i bought my XC90 I did call it "The Volvo" as that was quicker to say!

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/11/2023 00:49

Oh and the Volvo was called Sven and my current Kia is called Kipps, both due to their reg plates although in Sven's case it was worked in two ways!

Do you decant the wine, or serve it straight from the box?

😂

I am common so straight from the box here!! But I do have proper linen napkins.....papers ones....urgh!

It's up to Kemi how she says her own name, but she's wrong!

Discomboobulated · 28/11/2023 14:15

How does Kemi pronounce Kemi?

Forgotmycoat · 28/11/2023 15:30

'it'll be a crisis. Richard is invaluable in a crisis.' 😂😂

How does Kemi pronounce Kemi?

You can hear her saying her own name right at the beginning of this:

She pronounces Kemi to rhyme with hemi, demi, semi etc. But the pronunciation debate is over her surname. It's a Scottish name and a place in Scotland, and the first vowel sound is not usually pronounced the way she says her name.

My MIL politely requested (when I was expecting our first child), "please, if it's a girl, don't call her Maisy, it's very 'below stairs' "

Utterly gobsmacked at the snobbery.

The first thing I said when expecting our second was "don't worry, this won't be a Maisy either".

I've never considered names in that category thankfully - I either like a name or I don't - wether they'd fit in upstairs or below stairs of a stately home really doesn't come into play.

My MIL said she hoped if my first child was a girl I 'wouldn't call it Sharon or Tracey'. (Odd as she'd named her own Dd Julie & raised her in a semi on the edge of Birmingham ...)

ellyeth · 04/12/2023 19:54

When, as a child I said when offered more food, "No thank you, I'm full up", my Aunt (originally from quite a modest background but who acquired all sorts of airs and graces) pulled a face and said "No, Ellie, you should say "I have had sufficient to fill my capacity"." What the .... !

We used to giggle when DM (God rest her) brought out the fish knives whenever the DCs had fishfingers and chips... 😁

I've just remembered my dear old Grandma used to give me one of the silver fish knives to eat my cod in butter sauce, mash and peas 🤣

Backinthedress · 13/12/2023 13:43

My mum is rather upper class (albeit not all that wealthy any more) and brought me up to accept all her etiquette and rules as de facto: correct. I was a bit bewildered by the faux niceties of my (now ex) in laws when I met them (I was quite young and very sheltered in terms of exposure to families different from my own), especially the insistence on french words for things (serviette, pardon etc). I remember how shocked they all looked when I said 'What?' rather than 'pardon'. I think I actually went down in their estimation as they had considered me posh prior to that and I obviously wasn't if I said what instead of pardon.

I personally don't care that much as long as people chew with their mouths closed <pointed look at tweenage DS. Yuck.> and remember their pleases and thank yous.

sillsi · 13/12/2023 13:51

It is bewildering isn't it. My friend said of people she suspected of being faux posh, that as soon they uttered the word 'pardon' or probably one of the other French terms, she knew she had been correct.

All these identifying words! Even casserole is low down on the list I'm sure, I'd have to check that one. She's a crashing snob, though nice generally.

CasaAmarela · 13/12/2023 14:08

Me and DH have been watching this show after I read this thread. It's the highlight of our day 😂Best episode ever when Hyacinth stays at her posh sister Violet's house and meets the upper class neighbours. Or the one when she borrows a "yacht".

LivingDeadGirlUK · 13/12/2023 14:23

Ah these are fab! My mum is an Asian Hyacinth, hit me up BBC if your looking to reboot it..

I re-watched the whole of this on iPlayer in a week while my dad was dying, in between hospital visits etc, I find it strangely comforting still even though that was a very traumatic time.

DoraSpenlow · 13/12/2023 14:36

I used to work with someone whose surname was actually Bouquet. Poor man was always known as Mr Bucket after Keeping Up Appearances came on TV. He was quite posh too but took it all in good part.

AInightingale · 14/12/2023 08:37

I get this 100% @LivingDeadGirlUK . In fact now one of the things I like best is to watch comedies my late dad loved - he really adored Hyacinth, plus Reggie Perrin, Fawlty Towers, and Laurel and Hardy - and when I watch them I can almost hear him laughing along in my head. It's odd but very comforting.
