How long is your school and nursery run in the morning ?

codfeemug · 21/11/2023 07:13

I leave the house at 7:45 and I'm not back until past 9 am.

It seems really long to me. All driving !

First I drop my son at a nearby nursery and then I do the bigger drive to my DD's preschool.

It's really tiring !

Just wanting to have a moan and understand if my school run is the norm ?

We leave at 8.30 and I'm home by 8.50. Being close was one of the main reasons we chose the school.

Mountainhowl · 21/11/2023 12:07

I leave home at 8.40 and am home by 9.05, it used to be 9.25 when my youngest was in a private nursery, I'd get home at 9.05, throw him in the car and drive him to nursery for 9.15. He's at the school one now so no extra drive, he rides his balance bike because he's quicker on that than walking

TheValueOfEverything · 21/11/2023 12:09

Ten minutes walking- 20 mins there and back.
I usually take the dog and give him a loop in the park on the way home so 45 mins all in. Leave at 8:15 home by 9am.

KeyboardMash · 21/11/2023 12:13

I used to do this but ON FOOT. Took DD1 to school then DD2 to nursery then back home for work. Left at about 7.40, back by about 8.50. Now that was tiring. I felt very virtuous though. Less so now they're both at school!

But I think it's fairly unusual for it to be that long based on the limited pool of people I know, whether you're driving or walking.

Sparklyhat · 21/11/2023 13:07

30 seconds to walk there so about 5 min round trip, probably less most of the time.

Over an hour is a very long time!

Do they not have free transport on school buses in England?

In Scotland children get free buses if they live more than 2 miles from their designated school if aged less than 8, and for over 8's if they live more than 3 miles.

Yes it’s the same in England. Most of these school runs will be shorter distances.

Mine are both close. School is 10 minutes away, nursery is 20 minutes away - but in opposite directions. Also, our nursery was at my workplace which was very convenient until the lil ol' pandemic when I started WFH - meaning I had to schlep back to where I started after dropping off every day!

PurpleCar02 · 21/11/2023 14:48

Mine is about 40 minutes in the morning, but can be up to an hour for pickup, I have to do school before nursery because the wraparound times are shorter and it puts me in loads of traffic during the pickup run. I can’t wait until they are both at school then it will be about 20 mins!

Bearbookagainandagain · 21/11/2023 15:12

15 min walk each way. I can understand commuting for school, but why choosing different nurseries/preschools for your children? Is there one that would both near you?
Unless there is really a huge gap in their early learning program it's not worth it really. And there is a lot you can do to compensate at home at that age.

tiredmama23 · 21/11/2023 15:16

If I'm office based I leave the house at 7am, do nursery drop off at 7.30 (the time it opens so I'm often queuing outside), park up at work at 7.45 and get to the office for 8am. If I'm working from home it's a 45/50 ish minute round trip from leaving the house for nursery to getting back home.

Abbyant · 21/11/2023 17:00

3 minute walk to dd’s school, then 5 minute walk to Ds’s nursery back home within 20 minutes, about the same if dp drives.

Snowpaw · 21/11/2023 17:05

School starts at 8.55am. We put shoes on at 8.45am and are there in time - I thank my lucky stars for this.

mrsed1987 · 21/11/2023 17:08

I leave at 8.35am, get home by 8.55am. 5 min drive

FearMe · 21/11/2023 17:15

About 1.5-2 hours in the morning depending on traffic, from home to secondary school and back to office.
About an hour pickup as he gets bus out towards home.
We live in an area unserviced by public transport and his school is not in a direct route from us.
Long story, SEN, was the best school choice for him, but he's not SEN "enough" to qualify for school transport.
Not in the UK.

Nevermind31 · 21/11/2023 17:24

4 min walk round trip.
it used to be a 30 min walk round trip, and then a 40 min drive ( round trip - dir to traffic, it wasn’t very far).
it makes a huge difference being so close to school , life is so much easier

SnappyDragony · 21/11/2023 17:29

I leave at 7.10, walk 20 mins to the bus stop, 20 min bus ride and a 10 min walk the otherside. Usually get there about 8.20 depending if the bus is on time, usually end up waiting between 5 and 20 mins for the bus. Never learned to drive so reliant on the bus. Does us both good though 😁

Danikm151 · 21/11/2023 17:30

Leave home at 7:50 at nursery by 8:05( used to be 8 with the pushchair but we’ve said goodbye to that now 😭)
If I work from home I’m back by 8:15 but if I go to the office then I get there by 8:45 (walk and bus)

ISeeTheLight · 21/11/2023 17:31

We recently moved house (and kept DDs old school as she's settled and it's a good school, plus only a couple more years left). Plus there's a whole load of roadworks due to new estates being built (so single file traffic with temp traffic lights) - I drive the long way around so takes 30-45min there and back.

Before we moved it was about 5min each way by car so 10min total, twice a day. Definitely feeling the longer distance and it's a bit annoying especially with the roadworks; otherwise it would take 20min twice a day which would be fine.

Tiredmumw · 21/11/2023 17:32

For school, we leave at 08:15. It takes us 25 minutes to walk there. Then 25 mins for me to walk back. I’m home by 09:15. I work from home 4 days out of 5. If going to the office I get the bus outside the school and it takes me an hour to get to work so I arrive at work at 10. For breakfast club we leave at 07:15. I’m used to the hour round walk now. I don’t drive so no other choice.

Homesweethome23 · 21/11/2023 17:36

Primary school we left at 7:30am for drop off at school gate at 8:35 then drove to work to sit at my desk at 9:10.
Now at secondary school we leave at 8am drop off at 8:30 I’m at work by 9:05.

casuarinatree · 21/11/2023 17:42

40 minute round trip here. Previously it was an 8 minute round trip.

DH and I share it now as it takes too much time for one of us to be doing it all the time.

Mamabear48 · 21/11/2023 17:42

I leave at 7.30 and get back for 8.50ish. If it’s my non working day and I just have to drop my daughter at school it’s 10 mins walk away and then back

GreyhpundGirl · 21/11/2023 17:49

5 min drive to nursery on the way to work..The primary school.we want is at the end of our road but none on our list are more than a 10 min walk which my husband will do as he works from home.

usernother · 21/11/2023 17:54

Do you work from home OP? My school run was 4 miles drive in rush hour traffic that took nearly an hour then drop offs at 2 different school then had to drive across the city to get to my place of work.
