How long is your school and nursery run in the morning ?

I leave the house at 7:45 and I'm not back until past 9 am.

It seems really long to me. All driving !

First I drop my son at a nearby nursery and then I do the bigger drive to my DD's preschool.

It's really tiring !

Just wanting to have a moan and understand if my school run is the norm ?

My kids are older now at secondary school but it is 5 minutes there and back. In the traffic if I run them up there - its about 10-15 to walk.
When they were at the same junior school it was 5-8 minutes walk then the same back. Nowhere to park and so close we walked everyday.
When they were at separate junior and infant schools it was 5-8 minutes to the junior school and an additional 5 to the infants but less than 10 to walk home as it was more direct.
The longest was when one was at infants and one at playgroup when it was less than 10 to the infants then 20 to the church where the playgroup was and 1/2 an hour back home.

Nursery was next to work, so 15 minutes there and about 5 minutes to the office.

We leave (walking) for the school run at 8.20 and back home by 8.35 😊

ZenNudist · 21/11/2023 07:29

5 mins drive. 10 min round trip for ds2.

Ds1 is on 40 min school bus so if I have to go to his school (rare) it's a 15min drive there.

CoalCraft · 21/11/2023 07:31

Takes about 50 mins for all of us to get to work / nursery in the mornings (they're on the same industrial estate), and 50 mins to get home again in the evenings. Used to take about 35 mins but the traffic has gotten steadily worse, I guess as people have gone back into the office?

It is too long in the car for the kids really so as soon as the youngest is old enough we'll move them both to a different settings just 5 mins from the house.

RichTea63 · 21/11/2023 07:32

My dd couldn't get into the school which is 2 mins away from us.....so we leave at 8.15 and I'm back 9.15 (driving). All done with newborn in tow who hates the car seat 😫I absolutely hate it, but she's so settled that I wouldn't move her if a space did come up closer.

Birch101 · 21/11/2023 07:33

20min drive to nursery each way if no traffic and can find parking close then approx 45-50min round trip with drop off

anon3455 · 21/11/2023 07:34

45 minute drive each way!! It's a nightmare and we've been doing it for 2 years now (only because our DD absolutely loves the nursery and so do we). Can't wait for next year 'til she's at a school I can actually see from my living room!

3luckystars · 21/11/2023 07:35

8 minute walk

gingercat02 · 21/11/2023 07:35

Don't do either anymore, but the nursery was a 15-minute detour on the way to work. School was about 5 minutes if dropping at breakfast club. 20 mins on the days I went to the playground. He walked home most days with me or my mum, 15 min depending oh how many tomes we had to stop to look at stuff.
High school is a five minute walk now

berksandbeyond · 21/11/2023 07:35

We leave at 8.35 and I am back home by 8.50. It’s one of the reasons we chose to buy this house, the walking distance to the school!

When she was at nursery it was a bus journey (chose a nursery near our work and then work changed in covid) I do not miss that at all and we had to suck up a draining commute (especially) during winter as she was settled there and felt wrong to move her with school approaching!

1984Winston · 21/11/2023 07:37

It's 2 minutes walk but I always go early so leave at 8.30am, back before 9am

Peanutbutterismyjam · 21/11/2023 07:37

Eldest child has taxi to school (ALN school) which is about 15-20 minutes depending on traffic.

Youngest was a 10 minute drive but is now more like 15 because of 20mph restrictions. Can't walk it as it's nearly an hour for an adult on bad roads, let alone 4 yr old.

Mrsm010918 · 21/11/2023 07:37

I've got an hours round trip on foot to drop DD at school.

Once I go back to work I'll have to leave at 7.15 to drop at a minder to then get to work for 9 😴

ButtonDownBev · 21/11/2023 07:40

Maybe a 5 minute walk there and back (I could do it quicker but ds only has little legs lol)

SnapdragonToadflax · 21/11/2023 07:40

That sounds rubbish. Are they the closest, or did you choose them for a different reason? Do you at least live close to a school for when they're older?

Our nursery run was 8 minutes in the car (sometimes longer with traffic, but rarely). School is now a 4 minute walk. It's great.

I had a 1.5 hour commute for years pre-Covid which I now only do one day a week, and it makes such a huge difference to my quality of life, I would never go back to a long daily commute again.

3 minute walk door to door

Edited

About this for primary/nursery. We can see the school field from the back of our house.

Secondary is about a half hour round trip but we lift share so only do the mornings.

BarryKentPoet · 21/11/2023 07:40

7 minutes walk each way. All kids at the same school.

JollyJellyCat · 21/11/2023 07:41

15 mins drive, park as close as possible and 7 mins walk, wait for the gates to open, walk back to the car, 10 mins either home or office. 40 minutes in total.

No schools in walking distance and most have little parking nearby especially at pick up time, so we couldn't shave off much time by walking, though we are not at the closest school by a long way.

Didn't realise the school run would add so much stress and time to my day! (DH does do half)

dontforgetme · 21/11/2023 07:41

We walk, leave 8.25 and I'm back by 9.10 latest. It's no time and I still hate it Grin

MaggieFS · 21/11/2023 07:42

If we walk it's an hour round trip, nursery then school. Now it's dark I pick up in the car, reverse route, about 30 minutes.

DiscoBeat · 21/11/2023 07:43

It used to be a 10 minute walk to primary, now they're at secondary it's a 90 min round trip to drop DS15 off to one school then DS13 off to another. There are buses but unfortunately they usually can't get a seat on them so I just drive them (annoying, because it's £350 for the bus pass!) DS13 can get a seat on the way back for some reason so the return journey is around 40 mins.

SoftKittyBazinga · 21/11/2023 07:45

Husband drives 6 miles to the village to drop daughter off for the high school and off to work he goes. Then I drive 6 miles to the village 30mins later with our son for the later primary school start and come back home for work.

we alternate pick ups. It’s a bit mad but we chose to live where we do and knew this would be the deal.

Stressfordays · 21/11/2023 07:48

Mine have varied over the years. When I had some in pre school and some in school it was leave at 8.10 and back for 9am. When they were all in primary its leave at 8.30, back for 9. My eldest is in secondary and he catches the bus so its still the same for me. He leaves at 7.40 and is back for 3.45 usually.

MexterDorgan · 21/11/2023 07:49

15 minutes round trip, including taking DC onto the playground

Ohthatsfabulousdarling · 21/11/2023 07:50

That's DDs morning school run! We leave at 7:30 though and arrive home usually 8:45 though have arrived home just gone 9 a few times this past week.
DD goes to a school out of our catchment area, because all of the schools in our area were oversubscribed, then when it came to time to move on up to upper school we sent her where she knew people.
There's traffic the whole way there and back and it can take 30 minutes to leave the school so that's fun.

The one good thing is at 2 when I leave to collect her traffic isn't so bad, so I tend to have a much shorter journey and were home by 3.

I was looking forward to it stopping when she left school, but now she's looking at going to a college that's quite hard to get to by public transport, so if I take her to the point she cab then get there directly by bus, its going to take me 90 minutes still each way, each day. With a toddler and a baby.

I don't like driving OP. 😒
