When we know how bad the environment is how much plastic and stuff ends up in land fill how poor the workers conditions are why are we supporting them. I see so many people doing big hauls of stuff. I know it’s cheap and maybe it’s all people can afford by you buy cheap you buy twice.

I'd rather go without than buy that cheap tat.

There are other outlets to buy goods cheaply. I'd much sooner buy better quality second hand if I needed to.

JRBLB161821 · 20/11/2023 18:32

I've not had many good experiences with Vinted and wasted far too much money on it.

It mostly seems like people trying to sell their dodgy sized clothing or people who squeeze themselves into clothes they're too big for, stretch them right out and then try to sell them on as the size in the tag despite it now being stretched out to twice the size.

Nearly everything I've bought from there other than a couple of jackets have been unwearable and definitely not the size they claimed to be.

Also it seems cheap on one hand but postage on every single item can really rack up and end up costing you more than buying a handful of things new from one place.

Fair play to you for having the balls to say that, but you do realise you sound like a complete and utter moron? Your shitty cheap 10 quid bits are more important than climate change? Quite simply, get the f*ck over yourself. Nobody gives a crap what you're wearing. I'm the opposite of a climate change warrior, but this is so selfish. Nobody, but nobody gives a flying fuck what you wear. Nobody.

I don’t care whether other people give a shit what I wear Confused

I care that I like what I wear. And I like lots of different outfits, so fast fashion it is.

I also don’t care about climate change, and no amount of whinging/sob stories/made up crap is going to get me to. The more I hear about it, the less I give a shit.

You could replace that with why do people eat animals? Or fly on holiday? Perhaps some of the people using those shopping platforms adjust their carbon footprint or ethical position by not doing some of the damaging things that you or I do.

On the whole, I think gentle encouragement and support is often a better method of changing others’ patterns of behaviour, if you feel so inclined.

He/she without sin … and all that.

Except nobody who uses Temu gives a dick about the environment 😂

Shein and Temu shoppers are not going:

Ooh I need to be mindful of my carbon footprint. I'll lay off the steak this week. They're buying multiple swimsuits and jetting off.

Matildahoney · 20/11/2023 18:33

I've had to buy maternity clothes to last 6 months, New Look is just about affordable, supermarkets are reasonable but not enough choice, so Shein has lots of choice for a reasonable price and good quality for the stuff I've ordered..I will be keeping hold of it in case I'm lucky enough to have a second child. But I need something to wear to my work Xmas do for less than £35 as I'm so close to my due date and no actual guarantee I'll make it, so shein I'm sure it will be! I've searched vinted and eBay, there's not a lot to my taste on there.

Begsthequestion · 20/11/2023 18:33

Because they want cheap crap they don't really need, and they don't care that slaves who are literally forced into camps and suffering genocide are the ones making it for them.

If you don't believe me then Google it.

PurpleWisteria1 · 20/11/2023 18:33

The thing that people don’t realise about these sites (in particular temu) :-

  1. Not only are they using slave enforced and child labour - which if you actually give it a moment to think why would you even want to touch a product knowing that a slave child has packaged it / made it? No matter how ‘poor’ you are. Very few to none of us in the UK are actually poor. The very fact that you are living here means you have options that the majority of the world don’t.
  2. Even if you don’t give a shit that a 6 year old slave made your window stickers for you (or whatever) Temu’s sister company is being implicated and investigated for spy ware, data collection and by virtue it’s highly likely that Temu are also doing the same. And by that I don’t mean just a few details about your shopping habits. I mean code placed on your phone, bypassing phone security to monitor apps, texts, hack your Facebook and other accounts by changing passwords, monitoring emails and using that email to access passwords to other sites, cloning your identity and stealing your funds. I already know several people who’s Facebook was hacked not long after downloading the Temu app. Google it if you think I’m making it up.
  3. Even if you really don’t care about all of that, Temu and shein are having a severe effect on UK sellers. I own a small business selling personalised gifts online and myself and thousands of other sellers are having all their business taken because we can’t sell products for £1. Not to mention that thousands of us are getting our product photos directly stolen and placed on one of these sites where they will try to reproduce our handmade goods (and they will be 100% shit). These sites are not only taking from small sellers. They are spending such huge marketing amounts that large brands are getting completely wiped off searches. If you want to keep British brands, shops we know and love online and high street, if you want interesting goods by small sellers, if you want the money to go back into the UK to benifit YOU, your kids and grandkids, please please don’t use these sites. Yes I know they are cheap- but I would explore you to buy quality, buy less rather than have cheap crap shipped directly from these sites, before that’s all there is left.

We went in a clothes shop in north laine Brighton. The clothes in there were pretty much the same stuff as on SHEIN / Ali express but marked up x 4/5 times.

Same with eBay & Etsy.

North laine? Well of course they were. Might as well go to Bond St.

Ebay can be very cheap if you shop carefully.

Ponoka7 · 20/11/2023 18:35

miniegg3 · 20/11/2023 18:15

I've just bought some cute cheap bits for elf on the shelf and some Xmas window stickers 🤫

Their Christmas stickers, bath mats, cushion covers etc are great. I'm tempted to try the diamond painting over winter.

There's much more expensive brands often recommended on here, who fail the ethical shopping tests. Primark is often mentioned on here, even though they were the first to pay up when the clothing factory disaster happened. The designer brands, Mango, Benetton etc had to be chased for their compensation. Shein's range is amazing, especially if you are plus sized and the quality can be as good as M&S. I've never seen such poor finishing of garments than in Zara.

Well that’s not actually true. And no need to be aggressive.

FlissyPaps · 20/11/2023 18:36

You answered your own question. It’s cheap.

Unsustainable, unethical? Yes. But does everybody take that into account? No.

SicParvisMagna · 20/11/2023 18:36

I had to buy some storage for my son's room earlier this year, things to have headphones on etc that were stuck to the side of his wardrobe. Having bought these from Amazon, finding them extremely handy and needing more I was a bit miffed to find the exact same items on Temu. Not for over £15 like I'd paid, but just under £3. Same pictures advertising them. Shipped in the same box. From the same factory. Multiply that sort of thing by x y z and that's why.
I have placed two orders so far and yes they have been what could be considered "hauls". Mainly because I ordered everything I could think of that I needed and just did big orders to save on the amount of parcels that shipped, and because I had the money at the time. All stuff for the house and garden with a pair of trousers and a t-shirt for myself. All fantastic quality which surprised me. For a low price, I didn't expect much but thought if they're not great I could wear them gardening etc. I wore them all summer. And no, I won't bin them, or throw them away. I don't do fast fashion. I take care of my stuff and it lasts year on year. But we all need new things now and again, whatever it may be. Why should I pay more from Amazon or the high street? The idea of paying more for decent quality is so outmoded now most retailers ship everything in from abroad anyway.

slugseverywhere · 20/11/2023 18:36

This is why I take none of this "climate crisis" nonsense seriously. There may well be a catastrophe in terms of the the planet naturally warming but it's certainly nothing we can do anything about. Clearly. It's an idea sold and the new way to make money. Nothing more.

When you can explain to me why world governments don't stop massed produced pointless shit from China from finding its way to their countries, landfills and seas.

When you can tell me why a massive, heavy, brand new electric car with a battery made from materials laboriously and dirtily dug from the earth by children, powered by electricity often from dirty sources is more economical than driving your old '05 Fiesta you've had from new into the ground.

When you can tell me why cows and their 'methane pollution' is worse than vegan/veggie ultra processed production line food being pumped out from a factory, with ingredients often shipped or flown from the other side of the world where they've deforested a few thousand miles of land to grow the plants in the first place. Not to mention the shit tonne of cancer causing pesticides? Is the cow worse?

When you can tell me why we are encouraged to use the eco setting to wash our clothes, replacing good old hot water with chemicals. Now we add Dettol to our 20 degree wash, our bodies and our waste waterways. Lovely.

Plastic plastic plastic. Mrs Hinch types peddling their cheap crap for financial gain.

I could go on. Someone, somewhere makes a lot of money out of this. That's why.

Gameofmoans81 · 20/11/2023 18:38

I can’t afford high street so buy everything off vinted. All the people saying it’s cos it’s it’s cheap could do the same and help with the problem rather than add to it

wokbun · 20/11/2023 18:38

UsernameAlreadyTaken101 · 20/11/2023 18:08

I've never used them but I know lots of teachers use Temu for bulk buying classroom resources like counters, dice, cubes etc. I know they shouldn't but some schools are so badly resourced and teachers want the children to have practical materials to use to support their lessons. Even just buying storage boxes and baskets for books and utensils can cost a small fortune and every new teacher needs to supply all this (at least they have needed to in any school I've worked in).

They should go without then

Lovingangelsinstead · 20/11/2023 18:40

It's nothing to do with the COL. That's just an excuse. People are on the whole selfish and don't care about the environment/working conditions in other countries/fair pay for someone else etc

StaunchMomma · 20/11/2023 18:40

In the words of my 10 year old - That cost of living do be crisis-ing, tho!

Iloveechocolate · 20/11/2023 18:41

I have twin babies so it's more affordable for me to shop on these sites right now. The clothes have always been quite good quality imo.

Allfur · 20/11/2023 18:41

All this crap that every one 'needs' - will just end up in landfill, just as long as their bottomless pit of desire is filled

TodayForTomorrow · 20/11/2023 18:42

I've bought from there and some of the stuff I've worn a lot. I've had a couple of nice oversized jumpers that are great.

I woulf far far far rather buy from a charity shop or Vinted but the prices are often ridiculous and it's too much of a gamble. Some people seem to want £10+p&p for second hand Primark that you can't send back if it doesn't fit.

I would love to see second hand clothing become A LOT cheaper, then I'd be happier to take my chances.

Ponoka7 · 20/11/2023 18:42

Re child labour, the worst culprits are chocolate companies, Cadbury, mars, aero etc. Then you've got H&M, Forever 21, Gap, Nike, Zara, Adidas, Uniqlo (a favourite on here), Victoria Secrets, La Senza, Apple, Disney, the tobacco industry, Coffee industry etc.

Sugarfish · 20/11/2023 18:43

I would love to be able to buy something from a decent shop but I can’t afford it at the moment. I do look in charity shops and on vinted but I can never find anything I like. I do care about the world, and people. But if I’m honest, I care about feeling good in how I look a bit more.

Flickersy · 20/11/2023 18:43

It amazes me how much people are willing to use slaves so they can have a different dress to wear to every party they go to. Or so their kid can have stickers or some other frivolity.

Ginmonkeyagain · 20/11/2023 18:44

As a general rule is if you're not paying then someone else is, and it ain't the owners of Temu and Shein.
