When we know how bad the environment is how much plastic and stuff ends up in land fill how poor the workers conditions are why are we supporting them. I see so many people doing big hauls of stuff. I know it’s cheap and maybe it’s all people can afford by you buy cheap you buy twice.

I would want anything from temu I don’t want a house full of plastic badly made crap I’m currently trying to clear out my house don’t need to add more to it x

Good for you! People can buy what they like it's freedom of choice! Temu isn't for me, but shein like others have said is cheap and better quality than some high street stores!

caringcarer · 20/11/2023 18:47

Temu has loads of nice wooden toys. I buy lots of goods on there. I bought some icing nozzles for piping on the top of cupcakes for less than half the price anywhere else. I bought my 2 DGS's a bubble gun each. Exactly the same gum is 3x more expensive on Amazon.

So don’t shop there then. But your sample size of one does not generalise to the rest of the population. I don’t have any need to use a car mechanic but I don’t object to their existence on that basis.
Incidentally, I have gym clothes from shein which I workout in daily and haven’t had to replace it in two years. I bought expensive gymsharks (which, let’s face it were probably made at the same factory) and they started pilling after two washes.

RudsyFarmer · 20/11/2023 17:41

I’ve never shopped in either of these places but i’m now considering it!

Edited

Neither have I, but have just had a look and I will be putting an order in at one or both outlets, as the prices are really good.

So thanks @HappySunday1, for letting myself and others know about Shein and Temu. I think you have just got them some extra customers, which I do realise was not what you were aiming for, but it’s going to save me some money, just when I really need it. Just can’t understand how they can sell things so cheap, makes even Home Bargains and B&M look expensive!

lesdeluges · 20/11/2023 18:47

At the start of Covid around Feb 2020, The virus which originated in Wuhan, spread quickly around Europe. One of the reasons was that Chinese workers in the HIGH END FASHION INDUSTRY of Milan were returning from Chinese New Year back home, and brought it back with them.

So you see, the Chinese have conquered the world. Not only do they sell so called "tat", they also run a lot of the (presumably la la labeled) fashion clothing factories that supply high end shops in Europe and other countries. People buy it, thinking it is oh so good, look! it's made in Italy, the centre of fashion, so it must be ethical!

I lost interest in a lot of the eco guilt trippers after realising that. No one really knows what they are buying and from whom. The masking of Chinese labour in Europe and elsewhere is very effective. Made in Italy indeed.

So you see I much prefer to KNOW I am buying from China, than to be hoodwinked into THINKING I am buying from Italian high couture. I hate to be fooled.

I don’t care whether other people give a shit what I wear Confused

I care that I like what I wear. And I like lots of different outfits, so fast fashion it is.

I also don’t care about climate change, and no amount of whinging/sob stories/made up crap is going to get me to. The more I hear about it, the less I give a shit.

Climate change also doesn't give a shit about you. It's about to totally fuck you over in the most stupendous fashion in actual fact.

HappySunday1 · 20/11/2023 17:43

I’m on about the people buying stuff they don’t need if you need a coat and can only afford a Shein one then get one but does everyone need a pack of some plastic crap

Not everything they sell is plastic.

Ginmonkeyagain · 20/11/2023 18:48

Which high street is Shein better than exactly? Curious, I just has a look at the Shein website. The clothes look terrible, all too tight dresses and badly badly cut polyester jumpers and all displayed clearly computer generated models. It's like a Poundshop Jane Norman.

soggytodger · 20/11/2023 18:48

@FestiveSandman nice fighting talk but you against the climate, I wonder who's going to win there?

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 20/11/2023 18:49

@Circularargument but what I am trying to say is the stuff from SHEIN / Temu / Ali express is everywhere. Doesn't make you any more worthy buying it from a shop. All that's happening by buying direct is cutting out the middleman.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 20/11/2023 18:49

whilst I agree I will have to also say don’t be so naive. Everything that you buy has an environmental and ethical impact and not in a good way. Boo hoo awful working conditions in Leicester! Products that are marketed as sustainable most of which come from China, a well known homeware stores many cases of child labour, your mobile phone has a lithium battery the mining of which is unethical. It shouldn’t be a case of just shaming these fast fashion businesses in far flung places you need to think about this in everything you consume. They key is consume a lot less.

Catza · 20/11/2023 18:50

User79785435 · 20/11/2023 17:49

Because they sell exactly the same things as you get in shops. You just cut out the middlemen. All those in between have to charge markups for shipping, customs, admin, staff, brick and mortar rent, marketing, etc.

And no, you are not taking business away from lovely small, businesses. The core competition for Shein and Temu are mega corporations like ASDA, Tesco, Amazon, garden centres, discount stores. They are run by a bunch of wealthy, faceless men in suits and I have no qualms not lining their pockets when I can get exactly the same things directly from the factories.

Plastic waste is negligible because they're sending an item that is 100% wanted directly to the consumer. There is absolutely more waste involved with traditional retail because companies need to import masses of plastic crap that they haven't even sold yet. Anything leftover gets thrown away.

You do take business away from small guys when you shop on Temu. I am a surface pattern designer and many of my colleagues had their work copied and placed on products without their consent or licensing fees. At least, Shein pays their artists.

StarTrek6 · 20/11/2023 18:51

Once all the others have gone bust and we only have 100% Chinese options to shop in they’ll raise their prices and we’ll be stuffed

Halfemptyhalfling · 20/11/2023 18:51

If you use the sites instead of the high street it would be hypocritical to also complain that the high street is rundown, council tax going up potholes, local council being slow finding a space for your SEN child, country not being patriotic, china economy growing faster than us etc etc

Malarandras · 20/11/2023 18:53

To paraphrase Billie Piper: because they want to!

HeWhoMustNotBeNamed · 20/11/2023 18:54

YANBU although PP are probably correct that the quality, sustainability and worker conditions are unlikely to be much better in high street chains.

Personally I almost exclusively buy my clothes in charity shops as I feel I don't need to worry about sustainability and worker conditions if the garment is already in existence and has already been sold once.

If I shop on the high street, I will look through every label for materials and country of manufacturing (drives DM up the wall if we're shopping together) so shopping in charity shops saves me loads of time and disappointment 😅

Bikechic · 20/11/2023 18:55

Because they’re aged 15.

Gowlett · 20/11/2023 18:56

I think it’s just that the younger generation shop online now. It’s no different from me going to Primark etc as a teenager.

Verbena17 · 20/11/2023 18:57

I don’t think that enough people in the UK worry about the ethics of companies like Shein etc who probably have children making garments and getting paid very low wages. The UK is a long way away geographically and it seems that means people look the other way and overlook how their fast fashion clothing may have been made.

There’s a website that compares company ethics and Shein had a negative write-up.

Course it will 😂

hotcandle · 20/11/2023 18:58

I love Shein. I've bought some really reasonable gorgeous clothes.

Wellhellooooodear · 20/11/2023 18:59

Chickenkeev · 20/11/2023 18:29

Fair play to you for having the balls to say that, but you do realise you sound like a complete and utter moron? Your shitty cheap 10 quid bits are more important than climate change? Quite simply, get the f*ck over yourself. Nobody gives a crap what you're wearing. I'm the opposite of a climate change warrior, but this is so selfish. Nobody, but nobody gives a flying fuck what you wear. Nobody.

She does. You may not care about wearing fashionable clothes but others do and that doesn't make them morons.

MrsCarson · 20/11/2023 18:59

I've had stuff from Temu. It's the same stuff you find in Home Bargains and B&M So far none of it has been crap, but I haven't bought toys. Never had anything from Shien, nothing I really liked on there.

Lovemusic82 · 20/11/2023 18:59

For a similar reason people shop at primark. It’s cheap, fashions change so quickly and when you have teenagers to clothe you don’t want to be paying out a fortune for something that might only get worn a handful of times? I have bought a few bits from Shein, some have been awful and other bits have been brilliant, I would rather shop at better quality shops but sometimes I’m a bit skint and just want a new jumper/top.
Temu and Shein sell lots of things, not all of its plastic tat (yes a lot is), people are always going to be drawn to a bargain and many don’t think about where it’s come from or where it will end up.

momager1 · 20/11/2023 19:01

I use both temu and shein. I live in the carribean and have a post office box in miami that delivers here. The clothes here are either very poor quality of very expensive. I needed some swim shorts recently, as both my pairs were wearing thin. I ordered them thru temu. Imagine my surprise when they showed up that they were the identical shorts to what I had bought in Canada a year ago in a very well regarded store! Sorry but in this COL crisis, I will buy whatever is the best price for the quality. So far no real misses on either temu or shein.
