When we know how bad the environment is how much plastic and stuff ends up in land fill how poor the workers conditions are why are we supporting them. I see so many people doing big hauls of stuff. I know it’s cheap and maybe it’s all people can afford by you buy cheap you buy twice.

I was looking for something for my mum for Xmas today online. I've never bought anything from temu or shein but the first page of search results was just full of their adverts, so I can see it's easy to end up buying from there that way as well. It's very in your face.

Fionaville · 20/11/2023 18:23

Why is it only those particular sites that bother you? Most of the high street shops sell stuff that wouldn't hold up to your ethical standards. My DD loves Shein, the clothes she's had from there have been as good a quality as Next (maybe we've just got lucky)
I like Temu for the wacky stuff I've bought from there. Stuff that would cost me 10 times the amount anywhere else. Wooden educational toys for one thing.
I take care of our stuff. I've never hired a skip in my life. Everything is either donated, passed on or sold. So I don't feel wasteful. Just because things are cheaper, if you shop wisely it doesn't mean its tat.

I like fast fashion. I like it being disposable and constantly having new clothes.

I don’t care where it came from or the “environmental impact” people whinge about.

Honestly, I don't care either.. when half the world stops blowing each other up maybe I'll care about the tiny amount of impact I make 🤷‍♀️

Namenumber3 · 20/11/2023 18:24

I’ve bought once from Shein and the quality was probably as good as anything high street. I mostly buy second hand from decent designers but you need odd bits every now and again.
I’ve just used Temu. frankly because they had some bonkers stuff I’ve not seen elsewhere. I agree we don’t need more tat as a society but for me it’s once a year.

I more worried about Amazon. The amount of deliveries, packaging and unnecessary stuff delivered the next day is scary.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 20/11/2023 18:24

Boden is made in China now. Still the same price but I'm sure the money's not going to pay workers any extra.

I don't buy it now, no matter how much Johnnie reminds me to buy. It's not good quality and it's not worth the money to me.

I haven't bought on Temu but I know people who have, they like the stuff from there. When I see the adverts I sometimes think, 'that looks handy' but I don't need whatever it is, not really. I'm also trying to declutter.

I completely agree with PP who mentions Maslow's hierarchy; when you're not able to fulfil the basic needs that you have then striving to meet the aspirational moralistic ones is just not going to cut it. I wouldn't judge.

OP, what is it with your thread and all the other navel-gazing/pointless judging ones lately? Are you feeling the need to give people a slapping (that they definitely don't need)?

How do you need a "load" of swimsuits for a holiday? I get that you wouldn't want to buy expensive when shape is changing. But a swimmie from Tesco or M&S is less than £15. Nobody needs a "load" of swimming gear which is designed to last one holiday and then be chucked.

It's so wasteful. Where do you think all your discarded Shein and similar gear goes? Into landfill. Because it is too poor quality to sell, and nobody is going to buy used swimsuits.

Beginning to think the movie Wall-E was actually a documentary.

For me I can't buy swimwear that fits from UK retailers unless I want to pay silly money.
I have stupid sized boobs but size 10 on the bottom, shein has nice none granny dowdy swimwear that comfortably and safely hold my knockers in. I bought loads, buy they will last me a few years, I don't wear a bikini and throw it in the bin.

whatwasIgoingtosay · 20/11/2023 18:24

I've just opened a parcel ordered from Temu and it includes wooden crochet hooks, balls of 100% wool, hessian cord and rope for gardening, plus other stuff that may not be 'natural', but certainly doesn't fall into the 'plastic tat' category - an umbrella, gaiters for muddy walks, gardening gloves, a non-slip doormat, socks for the DC, a couple of pencil sharpeners, rolls of velcro, a tarpaulin, and much more besides. All useful stuff and, critically, at a small fraction of the price I could find these items elsewhere. You should take a look at the website - you'd be amazed! I'm a convert to Temu. 😊

Stroopwaffels · 20/11/2023 18:26

And the slavery and data mining doesn't bother you, @whatwasIgoingtosay ? As long as it's cheap?

PixiePirate · 20/11/2023 18:27

You could replace that with why do people eat animals? Or fly on holiday? Perhaps some of the people using those shopping platforms adjust their carbon footprint or ethical position by not doing some of the damaging things that you or I do.

On the whole, I think gentle encouragement and support is often a better method of changing others’ patterns of behaviour, if you feel so inclined.

He/she without sin … and all that.

BloodandGlitter · 20/11/2023 18:03

I could link you 50 different things on Temu that are on sale on Amazon for three or four times the price, I could probably find them on etsy too at 6x the price on Temu.

Exactly. I’d go as far as saying some things you buy in high street shops and online UK shops too. Bought a baby blanket I had seen on a UK baby site from Temu on sale for around £3, it was £24 on the UK baby site. No issues with quality and washes well. Why pay more buying from a shop when I can do just as the shop did and buy from the manufacturer?

PeonyBlushSuede · 20/11/2023 18:28

Xmaspenguin · 20/11/2023 17:54

I don't actually think there is much difference in the environmental impact between Shein/Temu and many other places on the high street these days. You pretty much need to be spending circa £200 an item to get actually properly ethically made clothing. Which most people don't have spare these days. Then you actually need to be the right size to fit into said brands (God help you if you are over a size 14 and under 5'5"!).

Shein also has one of the best plus sized collections I've ever seen.

I totally agree.

I buy from SheIn as they have such a great range for plus size - reasonably priced nice plus size clothes - not frumpy and/or expensive like on the high street.

I've found the quality good as well - similar to H&M, New Look etc

@ManateeFair 👍

soggytodger · 20/11/2023 18:28

because people are selfish twats which is why the climate crisis has not been averted and why we are going to face an extremely unpleasant future

WhamBamThankU · 20/11/2023 18:29

Can't say I judge people for using them no. Especially this time of year when someone could fill a whole child's stocking for less than a tenner.

Fair play to you for having the balls to say that, but you do realise you sound like a complete and utter moron? Your shitty cheap 10 quid bits are more important than climate change? Quite simply, get the f*ck over yourself. Nobody gives a crap what you're wearing. I'm the opposite of a climate change warrior, but this is so selfish. Nobody, but nobody gives a flying fuck what you wear. Nobody.

elfcow · 20/11/2023 18:29

Snobfest thread lol

PinkPlantCase · 20/11/2023 18:30

I haven’t read the full thread but Shein was the only shop that sold maternity swimwear that came with bottoms that were shorts rather than a bikini cut.

So there you go that’s why I shopped at Shein.

Good for you?

Really selfish if you have children who have to live with the consequences of that.

And to poor people who have your crap dumped on their land.

Limth · 20/11/2023 18:30

I've never bough from SHEIN before but there are some very good reviews on here. LOL. I've got six items in my basket now! Grin

Gilead · 20/11/2023 18:31

I’m disabled, can’t get out often and can’t afford Boden et al, we’ll, not if I want heating.

Tighginn · 20/11/2023 18:31

Too lazy to go to Primark, poundland, ect.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 20/11/2023 18:31

@Nchanged89 It is! I was so impressed.

@Stroopwaffels A load was an exaggeration - I bought three because I don't like sitting around in wet swimsuits. One wear, one wash/drying, one waiting. I'll keep them for wearing in the garden in the summer.

Circularargument · 20/11/2023 18:31

HomeBird43 · 20/11/2023 17:40

Oh op. Unclench and download the Temu app. It’s a game changer, I promise.

Or don't. The idea that you need to " unclench" by buying cheap crap is ludicrous.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 20/11/2023 18:32

We went in a clothes shop in north laine Brighton. The clothes in there were pretty much the same stuff as on SHEIN / Ali express but marked up x 4/5 times.

Same with eBay & Etsy.

listsandbudgets · 20/11/2023 18:32

I won't do it as long as questions remain about whether or not they're using forced labour by Uyghur Muslims in their supply line. They don't deny it just say it was not responsible for third-party sellers using its platform.

China is committing genocide against the Uyghur. I can not support a company that does not deny using forced labour when asked.

Temu: Risk popular website sells forced labour goods

The claims arise from an investigation into a US law barring imports made with Uyghur labour.
