AIBU to not pick 4 year old DD from school?

marshyrun · 20/11/2023 11:10

DD2 is 4 and in reception. She’s had the usual on off cough / colds since starting in September and is just coming to the end of a bad cold, she went to school throughout with me just giving her calpol in the mornings.

She woke up today absolutely fine, had breakfast, in good spirits. Still a slight cough but had some calcough before leaving.

School have just called to say her teacher has said she’s not herself, they checked her temp (all fine), she doesn’t feel sick or anything, they’ve said she’s just being quiet and clingy and not enthusiastic about participating in some of the activities. They’ve asked me to come and collect her if she’s still being “clingy” after lunch.

AIBU to not pick her up unless she’s actually poorly? I’m the first one to drive to school if my child is poorly but this doesn’t seem to be the case today. She’s naturally shy and quiet anyway so her being reserved is not out of character at all!

Haven't read the whole thread but go and pick her up. You say she's naturally reserved, school is saying she's clingy. Surely those things are opposites and should prompt concern?

DemelzaandRoss · 21/11/2023 11:53

YABU.
Exactly that.

ChiefWarlockOfTheWizengamot · 21/11/2023 12:10

She's four! Of course you should pick her up, poor little thing.

toomuchfaff · 21/11/2023 12:14

You're exactly the reason why schools are full of colds and illness, you sent your child to school full of a cold dosed up on calpol so all the kids got to share the germs, now you're thinking not to go collect her when specifically asked by school?

Why are people still telling the OP to pick up her child??

JANEY205 · 21/11/2023 12:21

FYI if your child is needing Calpol they shouldn’t be at school. That is how you know if they are well enough to be in or not. By your own post you said this was a ‘bad cold.’

Probably shock at how terrible the parenting is?

Lachimolala · 21/11/2023 12:23

I had this all last year, school phoning to collect for every little issue. But then I got in bother with the attendance officer? Not to mention almost losing my employment.

This year I’ve told them I’ll pick up for actual illness only.

She did. Yesterday.

Viviennemary · 21/11/2023 12:28

She has been ill for days and yet you still sent her to,school.

hotcandle · 20/11/2023 11:45

I wouldn't pick her up unless she's actually poorly.

She obviously is poorly though or school wouldn't have phoned. They have noticed she is behaving differently and that she isn't feeling right. She should be at home so she can rest

Marblessolveeverything · 20/11/2023 12:05

If you need to give Calpol your child should not be at school.

Why would you not pick her up?

This. The 'calpol parents' drive me nuts. Sick kids are forced into school and by mid-morning, when the calpol is wearing off, they are feeling awful with elevating temperatures and we have to call for them to be collected. It's a shitty thing to do to the kids and their classmates.

grumpycow1 · 21/11/2023 12:59

I would have said “I’ll come and get him” right then and there if it was my son. But appreciate your work meant you had to get cover. She wasn’t herself so I’d want to check her over and let her have a duvet day. I see you did that though 😊 It is tough juggling holidays and kids sick days!

Sausage1989 · 21/11/2023 13:05

Why on earth did you send a 4yr old to reception when they were poorly anyway?! Of course go and pick her up

You do know education isn't optional in the UK, right? What a strange thing to think that people are only sending their kids to school for free childcare.

Education isn't optional, no. But school is optional. Obviously most parents will choose to send their child to school as that is the cultural norm deemed best for all children, and also because most parents will need to work. However, school itself is, in fact, optional.

whynotwhatknot · 21/11/2023 13:27

my niece gets a cough cold rouhgly every month for a week-should she be off because shes been given calpol

Yes, that used to drive me insane. I was the one who had to call parents to come and collect when teachers kept sending them to me to be sent home (after the head insisted that children should be given calpol and sent in), and got shitty if I said they were fine to go back to class, and as welfare AND attendance officer, I then had to call a lot of those poor parents and stress them out about attendance.

I had a lot of parents telling me I had a fucking cheek as well as the head having a go at me for sending kids home and ruining his attendance (and his bonus), and on the other hand, I had teachers bitching at me when I didn’t.

I had to sit in attendance meeting while parents shouted at me and then when they left, have SLT bollock me too. I couldn’t do right in that job for doing wrong.

3 years I did that bloody job before I snapped and walked out one day.

Fivebyfive2 · 21/11/2023 13:36

@Leah5678 surely the obvious assumption would be a birthday in the year 88?

marshyrun · 20/11/2023 14:32

@takemehomecountryroads I’m not debating anything. I’ve already collected her over 2 hours ago, if you check the update.

Damned if you do damned if you don't. People on here don't understand the pressure you are under. Take it with a pinch of salt.

If you couldn't find someone to cover you then what she would have to stay in school. The school will understand the only reason why they ask you to collect her is because in a way it would inconvenience the teacher having to watch over her. You need to work to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head.

I am shocked you stayed there for 3 years 😲

Chocoletta · 21/11/2023 14:07

If she needs calpol before school then she's clearly unwell and shouldn't be at school.

Who will pay the bills and put food on the table and clothes on their backs. I will await your response. A woman told me she couldn't have sick leave or else she'll be out of a job.
