To expect husband to come home with me

Pickledprawn · 19/11/2023 08:16

I am pregnant and having morning sickness. We went out with our group of friends last night for dinner. He was drinking and smoking (I didn't complain I am happy for him to enjoy himself). It came to the time we needed to leave for the babysitter but he didn't want to come home with me. Normally I wouldn't mind but I feel like he could at least offer some moral support with me being pregnant. It's not like he has to give anything up at all. For context, he doesn't go out much and I trust him but I know he would have gotten really drunk and been hungover all day today too. Should I have been ok with him staying out?

I've had 2 drinks in this whole pregnancy and will be having 1 glass of red wine when I'm 39 weeks as a treat. A couple isn't going to do any harm

That will blow some people’s minds on here!

Why are so many posters happy for the DH to stay out and OP be the default parent to relieve the babysitter?

She WANTED to go home. She CHOSE to go home. It wasn't about relieving the babysitter.

@widowtwankywashroom

in the first trimester it’s absolutely not uncommon to be so big you can barely walk let alone exercise so if that’s not giving up your body I don’t know what is!!
and it’s not the odd drink is, it’s nine months of no alcohol!

Uncommon to be that big you can barely walk.
Utter bloody poppy cock

@Bbq1 it says in her opening post it was time to go home for the babysitter

@widowtwankywashroom

give over! Loads of women get severe pelvic pain and can barely walk.

and not to mention the weight gain!! Or are you also going to pretend that’s no big deal and doesn’t happen to many women?!

Sorry you lost me at him smoking while you were in the room.

No problem, he did what he wanted last night, he can be on duty with your DC this morning. You go and do what you'd like to do.

I don't have an issue with my partner going out/staying out occasionally while I'm pregnant but he still needs to do his fair share at home, and once we have kids he doesn't get to opt out of parenting in the morning before he opted out the night before.

Why? My husband gives me a lie in when I go out. I don't put a notch on the tally every time he has a beer with his friends. I'll give him a lie in so he can enjoy himself without worrying about feeling peachy at 6am.

It's a partnership, not a business arrangement

Yes it was - it's right there in her opening post!

VintageTuppence · 19/11/2023 11:06

I don’t think it would have hurt him to go home with you.

Maybe we don’t have to go back to the times of putting your feet up for 9 months (or perhaps that’s only in old movies) but a bit of nurturing won’t go astray while pregnant or as a new mother. My generation proved women can do it all alone and sometimes I think we lost something precious along the way.

I wouldn't describe being pregnant as shit... I loved being pregnant and it was such a privilege to grow a baby!!

Me too. I loved being pregnant and felt so fortunate to be having my baby. It's hardly giving up your whole body. The amount of women on MN who "hate pregnancy", "hate parenting", etc it makes you wonder what some women expect from pregnancy or motherhood. So much is viewed negatively with talk of sacrifices.

I presume @LuckySantangelo35 meant in the 3rd trimester? And I think it's the luck of the draw as to what you get. Dc1 I could barely move towards the end and struggled to even get shoes on. Dc2 I was walking school run (around 5 miles a day) until the week they were born!

It's great you loved pregnancy but you'd have to be pretty ignorant not to realise how damaging it can be for some people.

Pregnancy (and birth) can put women in hospital and can cause lifelong complications - it's not always a walk in the park!

She might have meant the third, but she said the first.

@Bbq1

you have to give up a lot.

Missamyp · 19/11/2023 11:20

The Man wants to stop out, partner/wife says no- he's being unkind, and inconsiderate.
The woman wants to stop out, partner/husband says no- he's being controlling.

Some things yes
A lot, no

Your pregnant not dying. Of course he can stay out!

She's not just pregnant - she's suffering with sickness.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 19/11/2023 11:31

@Pickledprawn I hope you mean "did his share" rather than "helped me"?

crumblingschools · 19/11/2023 11:34

I was sick and tired throughout pregnancy, kept waiting for the bit where you bloom, but never happened!

@widowtwankywashroom

I’ve already said!

alcohol, certain foods, certain types of exercise, you gain a lot of weight and can’t fit into your old clothes, etc etc.

LuckySantangelo35 · 19/11/2023 11:19

@Bbq1

you have to give up a lot.

Such as? If women are that bothered then they don't have to get pregnant or if they chose to don't complain about it and be a martyr for 9 months or more.

Happytimes123456 · 19/11/2023 12:03

margotrose · 19/11/2023 10:16

Surely you can recognise that lots of people have a different experience, though?

I'm glad you had what sounds like an easy pregnancy but lots of women don't.

Well same goes for that first comment. You can't say all pregnancy is shit.
I found it such a blessing to be pregnant!

Bbq1 · 19/11/2023 12:13

If some women love alcohol, swordfish and blue veined cheese so much probably best they don't get pregnant. No one forces them. Also, yes you put on weight but you can lose it again. If your clothes don't currently fit, get some new ones. Most exercise you can do safely up to birth, it's actually recommended. Fgs, it's only 9 months and a privilege to grow a life. It's really not, "giving up everything". Those of you who think pregnancy and motherhood is "shit" probably don't get pregnant again. Then you can have all the alcohol, food and clothes (that fit) that you can manage.
