My next door neighbour shouts at his DD

My NDNs have an 18 month old. The dad absolutely bellows at her and smacks her. This has been going on around a year. I also hear him playing with her and singing to her and making her laugh.

I find it really distressing. And I try not to judge but I can't understand what she could be doing that's so bad at such a young age and so frequently. I hear him shouting every day. As soon as it starts I'm on edge, listening and hoping he won't smack her. I don't know what I can do other than wear ear defenders all the time?

No, I didn't say that atall! You just assumed! I find it so strange that people think I would not have reported it.

And I find it so strange that you neglected to mention that in your OP…

Begsthequestion · 18/11/2023 21:26

What have you reported? Did you tell them something different to what you've posted on here? Because it keeps changing.

What did they say the fifth time you reported it? Any different than the previous four responses?

If you're troll hunting, you should report instead.

I think you've hassled the op to an excessive extent.

Yes, and not just once but four times! As if that is not worth mentioning either.

You can think whatever you like. This thread is messed up.

A year? So he has been shouting at & hitting a baby from 6 months old and you just listen Confused

Begsthequestion · 18/11/2023 21:31

Sad what some people do to entertain themselves on a Saturday night.

I'm off out tf.

UndertheCedartree · 18/11/2023 21:32

Begsthequestion · 18/11/2023 21:19

Three times or five?

You imagine the baby next door has been assaulted for a year, but you haven't heard it, or heard the dad threaten it, until just now? But you assume it's been going on.

What did you actually report three or five times?

I said about 3 times. I checked it was 4 times and I've reported again which was why I said 5 times now. Is it fun thinking you are catching people out? I don't understand.

3 times I reported shouting. Once I reported shouting and him threatening to smack her. Then I just reported him shouting again. I think I might have heard him threaten to smack her another time I'm not sure. Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned the smacking. I have quite a muddled head because I take a lot of medication.

You should absolutely report this to SS. Shouting and smacking a baby is sheer abuse.

Universalsnail · 18/11/2023 21:33

Please report this. The shouting is less then ideal but smacking too? This is abuse.

UndertheCedartree · 18/11/2023 21:34

MidnightOnceMore · 18/11/2023 21:24

Ah, I see.

I didn't assume you'd reported. But now I understand you have.

I think then the issue is 'I've reported, but it's still happening, and I find it distressing/don't know how to live next door to it'.

I think you should report any actual threats of violence or episodes of hitting to the police when they happen.

Also phone the nspcc for general advice.

Sorry your thread has been a bit tough - it really wasn't clear you'd reported.

Thank you. And sorry, I'm rubbish at making threads on here.

He's been smacking her since she's 6 months old? 🤔

I don't really know. I hope not 😔

OP posts:
Emeraldrings · 18/11/2023 21:35

Not convinced this is real. I mean if it's been going on for a year that means the baby was 6 months old when dad was hitting her.
If it is real and you have reported it 5 times it would have been investigated so not sure what else you can do except report to the police each time.
I'm not sure why you think your children are going to be so affected by hearing it. It's obviously not nice but they are safe, this other child is not.

3 times I reported shouting. 1 time shouting and threatening to smack. Then just now shouting. I left a voice mail just now.

@UndertheCedartree where do you live that it's not illegal to smack a child?

twofojoy · 18/11/2023 21:38

I'm sorry I really don't buy your excuses , it's common sense to ring the police when you hear child abuse.

That's fine if you want to think that. Doesn't change reality. All I'll say is it's a shame you don't understand not everyone is as good at communicating as you. Some of us struggle. I'm trying my best.

It's not automatically illegal in England. Wrongly IMO.

@UndertheCedartree where do you live that it's not illegal to smack a child?

It's not illegal to smack a child in England. Although I cannot see how anyone could condone smacking a BABY. But OP is not sure he is smacking... it's gone from 'he is smacking' to 'I think he is smacking' to 'I am worried he might smack'. It's an important distinction.

England, sadly 😔

It's not legal to smack an 18 month old in England. No court would ever find that it was reasonable. Possibly a smack to a 12 year old if they did something bad (still not OK in my opinion), but not a baby.

benefitsterrified · 18/11/2023 21:46

Op I think the fact you're autistic means your posts have been misinterpreted.

I hope your reporting does help the child.
