To still own CDs and DVDs

Sallybegood · 17/11/2023 20:30

I’m late 30s. Attempting a very much needed declutter. I don’t have loads, maybe about 30 DVDs and 40 CDs, but anything I can cull will be helpful. AIBU to be going selectively through what I have and planning to keep some rather than just sending the lot to the charity shop (and sending my CD player with them)? If you’re around my age, do you still own any? I won’t be buying any new ones.

YANBU - it’s reasonable to keep a select amount, especially of DVDs since the streaming services don’t have everything

YABU - get rid of the lot, this isn’t how people access content any more

We have hundreds of dvds and cds and occasionally still use them. We've got beautiful storage for them (like amazing bookcases and oak furniture) so they're not in the way and look like decoration. We don't plan to get rid anytime soon. YANBU.

Soubriquet · 17/11/2023 20:32

I have dvds and buy new ones in all the time. There are stuff I wanna watch that aren’t in streaming

Fawbs89 · 17/11/2023 20:32

Spotify.

VickyEadieofThigh · 17/11/2023 20:33

I just don't know what to do with the hundreds of dvds in the loft.

KrisAkabusi · 17/11/2023 20:35

I put hundreds of each in a skip during the summer. Charity shop not interested, no takers at a car boot sale. Nobody wants them as most people don't even have anything to play them on any more.

ServeMeTheSky · 17/11/2023 20:35

I still buy CDs both new and from charity shops.

Scruffington · 17/11/2023 20:36

I'd file the DVDs into one of those zip up folders. Always worth hanging on to your favourites.

With regards to CDs my brother is convinced that any album that was released initially as a CD is worth hanging on to. So he wouldn't keep a Beatles album that had been reissued on CD but would keep a Pulp album for eg.

Elzibells · 17/11/2023 20:38

Yanbu. We've kept some dvds that we would have to purchase to stream. I've kept alot of cds too, it's a faff to stream in my car so I just put cds on, I like it! My 3 year old knows what a CD is too now which surely can't be a bad thing.

Flightsoffancy · 17/11/2023 20:40

I've just bought two albums on CD to listen to in the car! I like having the things themselves, with the inserts etc and I rediscover stuff more easily if I pick it off my shelf rather than have digital versions. Don't really bother with DVDs any more, although I've kept plenty. But I'm 47 so maybe too old to be helpful here 😂

APurpleSquirrel · 17/11/2023 20:41

We have kept a selection of DVDs - particularly useful for when the broadband goes down & you still want to watch something.

Fifthtimelucky · 17/11/2023 20:46

We still have masses of CDs and DVDs. I rarely buy DVDs these days, but I still watch them and I do still buy CDs.

We also still have lots of videos and vinyl records!

TheDandyLion · 17/11/2023 20:46

Haven't used a CD or DVD in at least 10 years probably longer. The house is full of tech but I don't think we have a device to even play one anymore.

SurelySmartie · 17/11/2023 20:48

I still keep CDs especially of classical music they’re better audio quality than most streaming or online things.

AppleKatie · 17/11/2023 20:50

I got rid of all mine in a declutter 15 years ago. It felt really radical at the time.

I was worried I’d miss them dreadfully.

I don’t 🤣 and haven’t at all. So I’d say do it!

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 17/11/2023 20:50

We have a small handful of dvd's for holidays as holiday cottages and caravans seem to still provide dvd players.

But I really do mean a handful. The rest went to music magpie when we could still get cash for them.

Oh and I own one CD made for me by DH in our teens. Kept solely for sentimental value.

Fionaville · 17/11/2023 20:50

I can't answer. I've got 100s of each that haven't been used in years. I don't know what to do with them!

BogRollBOGOF · 17/11/2023 20:51

I still like CDs and DVDs. I like to know I have what I like.

We take the DVD player and DVDs on holiday and have guarenteed films that we know we all like.

RightTimeRightPlace · 17/11/2023 20:51

Fawbs89 · 17/11/2023 20:32

Spotify.

You can have both though? We have Spotify, alexa, my daughter uses amazon music etc. We still have vinyls, cds and dvds. I've even got some classic cassette tapes in the loft.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 17/11/2023 20:57

Very few DVDs (we never had many) but 100s of CDs and in fact I'm asking DH for a new CD player for Christmas.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/11/2023 21:02

Most our DVDs are only available for streaming if you pay more than we paid for the DVD.

My teenagers buy CDs, and think LPs are cool. Not that they say LP of course.

whoami24601 · 17/11/2023 21:04

I'm watching a DVD right now 😁 I didn't want a TV in our room but DH did so we compromised and set it up solely with a DVD player so we're not tempted to mindlessly watch TV til the early hours.

EBearhug · 17/11/2023 21:05

I raise you tapes and vinyl with wind-up gramophone and shellac 78s. 😉

I have my CDs and DVDs.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 17/11/2023 21:06

I'm 40. I still play CDs in the car.
I was just thinking I should get up in the loft and grab a few of my favourites from the box that got chucked up there when we moved house.

Panda89 · 17/11/2023 21:06

I got rid of all mine when we moved 3 years ago and they haven’t crossed my mind since.
I’ve always been able to find what I want to watch on the various streaming services.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 17/11/2023 21:07

I'll see your CDs op, and raise you MINIDISCS! Anyone else got those? No... Just me then... 😬
