To still own CDs and DVDs

Sallybegood · 17/11/2023 20:30

I’m late 30s. Attempting a very much needed declutter. I don’t have loads, maybe about 30 DVDs and 40 CDs, but anything I can cull will be helpful. AIBU to be going selectively through what I have and planning to keep some rather than just sending the lot to the charity shop (and sending my CD player with them)? If you’re around my age, do you still own any? I won’t be buying any new ones.

YANBU - it’s reasonable to keep a select amount, especially of DVDs since the streaming services don’t have everything

YABU - get rid of the lot, this isn’t how people access content any more

Anther vote for owning actual things, not renting!

Finance = findable

I’m 30 and I haven’t bought or used either for years. All of my music is on Apple Music and we access films through the firestick. Honestly couldn’t stand the clutter.

Singleandproud · 18/11/2023 09:42

I have loads of dvds in a zip up case - not sure I have anything to play them on now though.

DD loves buying CDs from the charity shops and they live in the car.

I have DVDs and CDs, but also audio cassettes and vinyl.... I suspect you will be fine to keep what you have.

Thanks for all the replies! Useful stuff to think about. For those who say they prefer to own DVDs of favourite films/series etc as streaming versions can be pulled - I feel the same to an extent, but I guess when storage space is really tight (as it is for me because in general I keep too much stuff), there does arise the question of how often you’re actually going to re-watch them? For example I’ve kept a big DVD box set of a series I liked from the 90s because it’s not available on streaming and I do feel I might want to watch it again at some point. But realistically it is 17 years since I watched it last (!) and I’m still not quite feeling ready for a re-watch.

Oops posted too soon. I meant to add: I’m guessing others are re-watching more frequently?!

We have my vinyl from the 80s onwards and new that the kids have bought.
They buy second hand CDs as they like a physical copy and some are rarer than others.
Youngest is very into music and would tell you that bands can’t make much money from Spotify so touring, merch and physical media keeps them afloat. Especially newer artists.
This is why you’ll see even the likes of Take That selling signed CDs, coloured vinyl, or access to presale tickets if you buy a CD/vinyl copy of their latest release.
We still have DVDs but rarely add to the pile now!

I have been a charity shop volunteer for about 10 years and this is something that has really changed since I started. We used to do really well on CDs and DVDs, especially mainstream movies and pop CDs. Every car had a CD player, every house had a DVD player. But now we are deluged with CDs and DVDs and we just can't shift them because everyone is streaming. New cars have bluetooth connection to phones rather than CDs and everyone has Netflix and Disney+.

Some charity shops may take them but ask, we're refusing as even at 3 for £1 we can't get rid.

I'm the same age.
I haven't listened to a CD in probably 10 years. I still have about 100 of them, but honestly am not sure what to do with them.

DVDs I have loads. But about 8 years ago, I got rid of all the cases and put the discs in those see-through individual plastic wallets, and they are now stored in 2 pretty boxes underneath my tv. I do still watch the occasional DVD, but not often.

Bostonbakedbeans · 18/11/2023 11:23

I have old players for both CDs (@20) and DVDs (40). I watch the DVDs when DH is watching the footie on tv.
In fact I donated a pile of old books last week to Oxfam and came out with 2 Blackadder dvds! 🤩
I managed to get our old wedding vhs tapes and childhood cinefilm digitised last year (showing my age) and we had a movie afternoon with the DC howling with laughter at the hair and outfits!

Mate, you’re on a forum called ‘AIBU’. It sounds like you might be happier elsewhere?

"Mate", I can comment wherever and howsoever I bloody well like, thanks.

My bedroom entertainment set up is a 12 year old non smart TV, to which is connected a Sony Picot, on which I play my DVDs, listened to via a sound bar (which replaced the speakers when they died). I can also Bluetooth from my phone or tablet to the sounds bar. There is also a Chromecast connected to the TV for casting content from iPlayer, Prime Video etc.

We must have hundreds of DVDs and CDs. No intention of getting rid of them. There are means of playing them in the living room and all three bedrooms, be it a simple DVD player or Play Station in the kids' rooms. There's also a Blu-ray player in the living room, but tbh we never bought many of them. I find DVDs fine, and cheaper.

I'm currently listening to a CD from a box set by my favourite singer, that I bought new last year (the box set, not the singer).

I use the PC to rip my favourite CDs to audio files so I have them on my phone or tablet to listen to on long bus journeys. Equally, we can burn audio files that we've purchased to CDs. My favourite band and singer still release their albums as CDs. I have a mix of CDs and MP3 albums by them, downloads usually when I've been too impatient to wait for a CD to arrive in the post.

PS DH also has a turntable and a fuckton of vinyl. Not revival, we're both of the age that played records and cassettes in our youth, and he's always had a turntable as part of his separates, along with a double cassette deck. I don't use them though, prefer my CDs tbh.

As you seem lost: this is a forum where people talk about their situations and decisions they are making and ask other people what they think of those situations and decisions. If you find that innately irritating, your coming here is a poor use of everyone’s time, but particularly your own.

I just recently got rid of the final lot.

I got rid of most about 3 years ago but kept about 20 favourites. 3 years on they hadn’t been touched so they have gone along with the DVD player.

As you seem confused: my time, my decision. My call.
Bye now.😏

We don't have CDs but we do have our favourite films on DVD just in case the internet ever goes down.
