To still own CDs and DVDs

Sallybegood · 17/11/2023 20:30

I’m late 30s. Attempting a very much needed declutter. I don’t have loads, maybe about 30 DVDs and 40 CDs, but anything I can cull will be helpful. AIBU to be going selectively through what I have and planning to keep some rather than just sending the lot to the charity shop (and sending my CD player with them)? If you’re around my age, do you still own any? I won’t be buying any new ones.

YANBU - it’s reasonable to keep a select amount, especially of DVDs since the streaming services don’t have everything

YABU - get rid of the lot, this isn’t how people access content any more

I was listening to a couple of cassette tapes this evening while doing some sewing. We still have about 100 and listen to them fairly frequently. Same for CDs.

For many tapes and CDs the sleeve notes are interesting and add to the experience.

Circularargument · 17/11/2023 22:13

Who cares what "people" do? If you want to keep some, do.
Honestly the constant "is this normal, what do other people do, how can I follow the crowd and avoid making any kind of personal decision" trend around here is so bloody irritating.

I still buy CDs both new and from charity shops.

I don't even know where you can buy cds new!

Amazon, direct from artists' websites, at gigs...

Ladyj84 · 17/11/2023 22:17

I've never stopped getting DVDs and CDs love em and only 30s lol hubby same

User74895634 · 17/11/2023 22:19

I have loads of DVDs, the streaming channels don't show a lot of things, I play CDs in the car.

quivers · 17/11/2023 22:20

If I'm going to part with money for something, I'd prefer to own a physical copy of it rather than rely on a service that could disappear into the ether at the whim of some random computer that decides that I should no longer be allowed access to it.

Meandermoanda · 17/11/2023 22:20

I have hundreds but I keep them in little sleeves instead of their cases to use less space. I can't bring myself to part with them because I still have a cd player in my car and it's nice to keep them all in case streaming goes weird when I'm old. I can pass them on too.

User74895634 · 17/11/2023 22:24

It's a lot cheaper to buy a dvd series you really like than to endlessly pay for Netflix, (other streaming channels also available) in the hope that something you may like will be on

BadLad · 17/11/2023 22:29

We’ve got loads of both, all ripped to a hard drive so they can be watched on TV or copied to a tablet or phone at any time. Nobody can cut them or delete episodes or wokewash them in any way.

Clawdy · 17/11/2023 22:30

Still play my cds every Friday and Saturday evening with a glass of wine! Love them. S

Eike · 17/11/2023 22:35

I think it's worth keeping DVDs you really like.

You actually own it, whereas ones you purchase online could reasonably disappear if the service ever goes bust or whatever, or have internet issues. I buy them from CEX second-hand if they aren't on Netflix for free. There's a series I want to watch but it's on Prime, which I don't have, plus what happens if I sub to Prime and then unsub? I can't then watch it/lose it if I've bought it,plus how many months of Prime will I have to pay to watch all the seasons? Probably more than it would cost be to buy the 2nd DVDs that I can then watch as much as I like for free....

Eike · 17/11/2023 22:38

Don't know why I said netflix for free. I think I mean once you sub, they are just there for the sub price, whereas on prime only some are included and you still have to buy/rent others

This absolutely.
Basically, you're just renting music, series and films.
And many of them seem to be available for streaming for only a limited time,
when you can actually access the ones you want.

NeedWineNow · 17/11/2023 23:21

We've still got DVDs and CDs which we can play through our Blu Ray DVD player. Love the Christmas CDs when we're putting decorations up and doing the wrapping.

In fact my stereo was ahead of its time. It has a 10 CD rack type thing, so I've always loaded 10 discs and set it to random play. So it was sort of an Alexa of the late 80's.😂

10? Wow that was posh! My brother bought one that had a 5 CD changer in the 90s which I inherited. I absolutely loved choosing which 5 to put in. The joy of not knowing what was coming next 😁

Growlybear83 · 18/11/2023 09:03

I don't think I've ever got rid of a DVD or CD, and I've still got a number of VHS tapes. We've also got hundreds of vinyl records, mostly albums, going back to the early 70s. I think I've still got a couple of my mum's 78s too. Apart from the 78s, we still play/watch them from time to time. CDs in particular take up so little storage space, why get rid of them?

LlynTegid · 18/11/2023 09:08

Some may have sentimental value, in my case some were gifts and some others I know or have met the musician.

Haruka · 18/11/2023 09:21

I still burn my own CDs to listen to in the car. I have an old laptop with a CD/DVD drive just for this purpose, even if, these days, it can take half an hour to boot up.

Missedmytoe · 18/11/2023 09:23

I still own vinyl! I like the format if what I have - plus some is autographed, so I'll be keeping it all.

Biker47 · 18/11/2023 09:26

Got rid of my CD's ages ago, now I just download everything off of spotify to play either on my phone or in the car. Still have blurays, I want to keep them, but have bought a disc storage case thing which stores hundreds of discs, so I'm going to move them all into that and put the actual cases in the loft to free up some space.

Mate, you’re on a forum called ‘AIBU’. It sounds like you might be happier elsewhere?

I put hundreds of each in a skip during the summer. Charity shop not interested, no takers at a car boot sale. Nobody wants them as most people don't even have anything to play them on any more.

That’s interesting, both our local ones have them on the donations wanted currently poster on their window

Reugny · 18/11/2023 09:35

Just this week I had to deal with crappy broadband and a sick child. DVD player worked a treat.

I keep both DVDs and CDs for that reason. Though I have to play the CDs on a Blue ray or DVD player or in my car.

This is also the reason why I have an old fashion radio.

Wolvesart · 18/11/2023 09:38

The DS is a movie buff so we we have quite a few DVDs. As others have said, not everything is streamable. A good example is that he wanted to watch Twin Peaks tv series and - at that time - it wasn’t available. I bought him a huge box set for a birthday present. NB he’s 18.

Re CDs - I personally find that classical music isn’t always findable on streaming.

The DVDs are boxed up in cloth cube storage in his bedroom. Arranged in finance ways. The CDs are in categories and alphabetised within those. I’m a librarian.
