To still own CDs and DVDs

Sallybegood · 17/11/2023 20:30

I’m late 30s. Attempting a very much needed declutter. I don’t have loads, maybe about 30 DVDs and 40 CDs, but anything I can cull will be helpful. AIBU to be going selectively through what I have and planning to keep some rather than just sending the lot to the charity shop (and sending my CD player with them)? If you’re around my age, do you still own any? I won’t be buying any new ones.

YANBU - it’s reasonable to keep a select amount, especially of DVDs since the streaming services don’t have everything

YABU - get rid of the lot, this isn’t how people access content any more

Ds collects vinyl and cds, new releases and classic.

WestendVBroadway · 17/11/2023 21:09

I still have a large selection of CDs which I mostly play in my car. I also can't bear to part with my huge collection of 80s vinyl singles and albums, though I have no record player.

NotToYou · 17/11/2023 21:09

No CDs or DVDs here and no way to play them.

resipsa · 17/11/2023 21:10

Keep at least one of each. Year 8 DT homework this term included looking at a CD/DVD and case. We had a long search to locate one!

Thehonestybox · 17/11/2023 21:10

Keep some! It's got to the point now where I feel cosy and nostalgic watching a dvd (which would sound bizarre to 25 year old me!)

Abergale · 17/11/2023 21:11

I took all my old stuff to cex. Got almost nothing for it but still felt better to get money for my collection!

mugofstew · 17/11/2023 21:13

The new vinyl ds collects sells out in a couple of minutes and often resells for hundreds of dollars.
It's quite the operation getting hold of it on a day when it is dropped.
It amuses me as we were told vinyl had died some decades ago.

PuttingDownRoots · 17/11/2023 21:14

We still buy DVDs. Cheaper than streaming plus you own them.

We keep them in folders.

SkaneTos · 17/11/2023 21:14

I love my CDs and DVDs!

I also still sometimes listen to old recorded radio programmes on cassette tapes, and watch old movies on VHS.

I'm 36 years old.

UnaOfStormhold · 17/11/2023 21:16

I have cds and dvds - I like having my favourites permanently rather than constantly having to pay a rental fee and being overwhelmed with choice. I did have a few mp3s I bought on Amazon that are now impossible to use unless you pay for a subscription which really annoys me.

Oh and I still have my minidiscs and player @GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut.

Echobelly · 17/11/2023 21:16

YANBU - I keep CDs and DH keeps DVDs (although he still buys them second hand and never gets round to watching them).

I can see the point more with DVDs in some ways - some people have pointed out that if there's a film or series you love and it's not that well known, you can't guarantee it'll always be available on streaming. Streaming services can decide to pull things at any time, so it could vanish and if you don't have a DVD it's gone.

This is so true!

Yay!

I feel sorry for the minidisc. It was a compete revelation, such a good invention. Just bad timing, got overtaken by mp3 before it ever became mainstream.

I spent hours copying my CDs onto minidisc, and then mocking up the album covers on MS paint!

grafittiartist · 17/11/2023 21:33

Still buy dvds and occasionally a cd. Nice to have a copy!

Christmasisonitsway · 17/11/2023 21:34

Dont have a CD or DVD player so none here

PurpleSky09 · 17/11/2023 21:36

I love DVDs and CDs and I won't get rid of mine! I'm early 30s and like my CDs for nostalgic reasons more than anything.

BrandyandGinger · 17/11/2023 21:40

I still have a lot of my CDs. I'm not usually sentimental but they used to be so expensive so I only bought ones I really, really wanted. My Dd keeps some vintage* ones in her room because they look nice.
*Some of her vintage ones I bought in the 2010s. Teenagers really know how to make you feel old.

IHeartGeneHunt · 17/11/2023 21:41

I've still got lots and watch/listen to them.

bettynutkins · 17/11/2023 21:42

I got rid of my 50-60 dvds on funky pigeon. Was a few years ago now but got about £20.
I kept about 5 of my favourites but in the end just got rid as could stream them.
I think they are unnecessary clutter.

UsingChangeofName · 17/11/2023 21:45

I see your CDs, and raise you to my records that I sometimes still listen to.

Spotify or whatever is useful if you want to listen to a particular song, but I put on a CD or a record and get tracks I'd forgotten about. It's great. Plus, I listen to them in the car without needing to have my phone out.

CesareBorgia · 17/11/2023 21:46

I still own cassettes and VHS tapes!

stayathomer · 17/11/2023 21:51

Wifi went down for a few days recently and we pulled out the dvd player and cd player. I’ll be honest if I were to pick between the two I’d say dvds are a bit more obsolete and apparently new tvs have nowhere to plug them in anyway, but I love my collection and find when you use any sort of a HomePod you end up forgetting what you want to listen to and listening to the same thing!

ShadowCipher · 17/11/2023 21:58

I prefer tv series dvds, as dont use eg netflix, amazon etc

ToriTheStoryteller · 17/11/2023 22:04

I still buy CDs and they are the main way I listen to music apart from the radio. The multi-level stereo that I bought with my Saturday job money 35 years ago is still going strong and the other day I played a cassette on it to show DS how it worked. Even showed him the joys of how to wind it on with a pencil.😉

ToriTheStoryteller · 17/11/2023 22:07

In fact my stereo was ahead of its time. It has a 10 CD rack type thing, so I've always loaded 10 discs and set it to random play. So it was sort of an Alexa of the late 80's.😂
