A friend recommended it. Have listened a few times. Just seemed to be endless discussions about stopping the small boats. Presumably this is a hard right leaning Station?

I don’t get why people put more effort into saying all this when mn threads thrive on it.

One part perception, one part demographics.

There is a lot of dismissive decrying of ‘wokeness’ and similar on Mumsnet - you really don’t have to look far. I would assume that insults from those with opposing views will stick out to any reader more so than those from their own side of the discourse.

That said, Mumsnet clearly leans left but I don’t think that’s surprising given demographics. In the most recent election, the gender gap was the largest it has been in decades (women were far more likely to vote to the left than men). The age gap is also very well known but is more pronounced among women.

In the most recent election, 61% of women under the age of 35 voted Labour compared to 19% of women over the age of 65; only 20% of women under 35 voted Conservative, compared to 62% over the age of 65.

Mumsnet (as right wing voters often point out at election time) is not a good representation of the wider population - the average Mumsnet user (a woman in their 30s) is far more likely to be left wing than the average British person.

I’ve been on here for ages. It’s picked up since the referendum and the pandemic.

I doubt the age range has changed

bombastix · 19/11/2023 21:30

@GuessItsANameChange - very interesting on the demographics! This is I think also reflected in voting Labour (unsurprisingly perhaps). It would probably be interesting to know the ages of particular posters who advocate for particular positions but a bit intrusive!

Halllooo · 19/11/2023 21:38

I find it’s astounding that there are still these right wingers watching this tosh who think it’s all the fault of immigrants and the wine and the gays … whatever ‘it all’ is …

The age range likely hasn’t changed but politics has generally become far more polarized over the past 10 years. Mumsnet leans significantly to the left so you’ll see the effects of that polarization, on the left, more on here than you would in other places with different demographics (GB News being an excellent example - I doubt that such an extremely partisan news channel would have gotten off the ground in the 90s or 00s).

Yes I’ll agree with that

Much more polarised now, sadly. I actually do want a range of opinions hence encouraging others to post even if not in the majority, and sometimes taking the flack for not being so

I also use mn as even though there is a skew (more so lately) I don’t see it like full algorithm SM which shows you information you already know increasingly. Plus I don’t actually do GBN at all, I’m more R4 and Times Radio even though the former can irritate at times

I like the FWR section though, it stands out generally on the internet as having intelligent nearly all female posters

EasternStandard · 19/11/2023 08:06

Yes I was surprised at a pp demanding evidence of left wing echo chambers

You only have to look at how many mn threads go, typically the same posters hounding other views off them

No one was asked or even demanded to produce evidence of left wing echo chambers. Perhaps you misread or misunderstood.

Not sure why you’ve popped up Confused Who cares if you’ve missed the conversation.

I found pp discussion interesting, your post shows you’ve misunderstood or missed it. Not that any of it was to you.

Scroll back and read if it interests you that much Hmm

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/11/2023 23:49

Why shouldn't I pop up? Is there a reason I shouldn't be on this thread?Hmm I was one of the people who asked what the LW version of thr KBG News channel was upthread.

Great, you’ve mistakenly thought I was addressing you then

I wasn’t referring to you in later comment. You’ll have to scroll back to see it was another poster.

TooBigForMyBoots · 19/11/2023 23:55

You did quote me.🤣🤣🤣

EasternStandard · 19/11/2023 23:59

So? Confused That comment re demanding evidence was not about you.

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/11/2023 00:02

It wasn't about anyone on this thread because no one here disputed that LW echo chambers happen or demanded evidence of their existence.😆

Jesus just read the thread and get what you need that way. I don’t need to repeat conversations with you.

TooBigForMyBoots · 20/11/2023 00:05

I have read the thread and you're talking out of your behind.

Scroll away, and move on 🙄

I agree with many posters above that Free Speech Nation is an excellent programme. Also like Michael Portillo on Sundays, along with the most surprising, in a good way, presenter to me, Arlene Foster.
The Sunday programmes often have Paul Emery on as a guest, he of Blue Labour - makes for some really interesting and informative debates.

‘Offer a different opinion, and you are immediately dismissed as a 'right-wing, conspiracy theorist loon' (or words to that effect).’

if it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck…

And, right on cue, you've highlighted my point beautifully. 👏👏

I'm curious... what scares you so much about having a proper debate that all you can do is project insults? I mean, your posts literally don't give people anything to work with. But it's others who are 'thick'. Apparently. 🙄

Jumpingthruhoops · 20/11/2023 01:57

EasternStandard · 19/11/2023 14:29

So that’s all you have..

Not the coherent debate as claimed pp

Apologies @EasternStandard I replied before reading your comment. But I agree. These people do not help their cause at all. In my view, when you start resorting to insults, you've lost the argument. And if you start with insults, then you likely never had any argument in the first place.

Jumpingthruhoops · 20/11/2023 02:14

Meowandthen · 18/11/2023 18:52

Examples please. You need to back up that claim.

@TooBigForMyBoots I believe @EasternStandard was referring to this exchange above.

The BBC is not left wing. At most, it is centrist but leaning slightly to the left of the absolute centre. Channel 4 News is the only tv news show that could reasonably be described as left wing. GB news is extremely right wing and easily the most partisan of the news networks.

If the BBC were left wing surely they'd have loved Corbyn (someone actually left wing), in reality he had unfair coverage from a supposedly balanced broadcaster.

Problem is many on the right see anyone left of Farage as a lefty.

SinnerBoy · 20/11/2023 09:01

^The BBC refused to call Hammas terrorists.
Do you not find that anti semitic or do you not consider anti Semitism to be racism.^

Not calling Hama terrorists is strange, but as the BBC explained, they were following OFCOM guidelines, as were Sky and ITV, when they similarly used terms other than terrorists.

The Daily Mail, which hates the BBC as a matter of policy, managed to make little mention of the rest of the facts.

Also, calling them militants doesn't equal anti-Semitism.

I mean, Laura Keunssberg is happy to work for them. You do know that she's Jewish, don't you?

EasternStandard · 20/11/2023 15:25

Thanks @Jumpingthruhoops i was too irritated to bother getting them the quote 😬

Agree on insults

Deathwillbebutapause · 20/11/2023 17:17

I mean, Laura Keunssberg is happy to work for them.

Or "Dumbo," as Nicki Minaj appraised her.
