Rwanda plan

AdamRyan · 16/11/2023 23:05

Was just reading Suella Bravermans thoughts on how to make the Rwanda plan work, which involve sending staff there to review claims and pulling out of all human rights and refugee conventions.

The plan has cost £140m to Rwanda so far, plus £££££ in legal fees and so far we've sent no-one and found out its illegal. I'm very baffled as to why the government are pursuing it, I keep hearing that "most people" support it. So I thought I'd ask:

IABU: It's a priority as it will deter immigration and the government should spend whatever money and time it takes to deliver this

IANBU: The government should focus time/money on other priorities instead.

Mickael Essouma is alive & on the Bibby Stockholm

Shame is still waiting for his claim to be processed rather than being employed in the NHS.

Let's hope he isn't on the Rwanda list

Thank goodness the NHS is so awash with Doctors we can afford to lock them up.
UK poaches Doctors from multiple 3rd world countries, yet here we have one already here but what do we do?

The levels of incompetence shown by this government knows no bounds.

Yes for the best I’m sure I’m guessing you’ll not go on about deals and this surprise surprise the number of Albanians arriving via irregular means has been vastly reduced again

Edited

You are right that I was mistaken, I wrongly assumed that the decrease in numbers crossing the channel was down to the UK-Albania deal. I should have known not to believe Sunak's statements

https://x.com/BestForBritain/status/1734971251494355426?s=20

So, it turns out when Sunak says: "Last year, a third of all those arriving in small boats were Albanian. This year we have returned 5,000 people and cut those arrivals by 90 per cent..." the number of Albanians returned after crossing in this way is ACTUALLY 500.

The reason this matters is that, as @DianaJohnsonMP establishes, this includes a number of foreign offenders - the lowest hanging fruit - rounded up and returned to boost the number and create precisely the misleading impression the PM's statement created

You’re all over the shop with this

Numbers are way down, measures in place are having an impact as you highlighted in your initial Albania post

stomachameleon · 13/12/2023 17:22

@helloOP sorry if I am being a bit dense... so why is he is on the Bibby Stockholm then? Is it the way he arrived or the fact he applied for asylum?

If he is a world renowned doctor why did he not apply to the nhs? Even as a locum?

It doesn't make sense... this is not a judgment on him btw but the system.

There is a 3 year wait to get your claim processed.

He could be sent to Rwanda without the UK government having looked at his claim.

I understood the very bad weather over the summer also played a part.

What new measures, Albania aside, has the Govt introduced?

Bad weather would impact all Channel crossings regardless of nationality not just Albania, that they’ve plummeted relative to other countries is outside weather

helloOP · 13/12/2023 18:09

Sure i get that, i thought you said there were new measures taken, that were working, fine if i misunderstood and there are none.

Outside Albania it’s probably more increased surveillance on French beaches but you may have to find a list as I haven’t looked for all things

Generally though a reduction can be looked at against Med / EU big jump in numbers

EasternStandard · 13/12/2023 18:35

What made me post that about measures was seeing that Tik Tok adverts from traffickers have been banned recently

Just looking at what is happening makes me realise how hard it is to deal with such high levels of profiteering and selling

helloOP · 13/12/2023 19:11

There are plenty more apps than TikTok, i hope we aren't relying on Chinese apps to police our borders.

Numbers crossing the Med into EU vs numbers crossing the channel into the UK are misleading, there will be a delay before we see correspondingly higher numbers coming here, perhaps the Italy/Albania deal will reduce?

100% agree on the profit/selling etc, its why we need to be back in all the EU law enforcement agencies.

Of course not Confused on using tik tok to police borders. It’s traffickers selling on there by the way and banning any ads is no bad thing on whatever platform

As for law enforcement agencies they are not helping the EU stop migration levels from rocketing

On Albania deal it’s probably bought politicians some time but if half are sent back due to failed claim half will be approved.

Whether voters in Italy feel that’s solving the issue enough we’ll see

His identity doesn't really matter

I disagree - the wrong man's identity has been reported by Cameroon Online.

Shame he is still waiting for his claim to be processed rather than being employed in the NHS.

When did the doctor arrive in the UK? Also, it appears to be the case that the doctor was screaming at 3am and has 'had some conflicts with security guys and the management' and you think he should walk straight into a job with the NHS?

Yes, it matters that the wrong identity is corrected, it doesn't change the tragic circunstances.

You don't think doctors can struggle with mental health? Especially one who is a refugee living on a barge in a room the size of a parking space and being left in limbo about their asylum claim?

You might have seen this already

https://bylinetimes.com/2023/12/13/asylum-waiting-lists-rocket-by-236-as-migrant-housed-on-cramped-barge-takes-own-life/

Migration experts say the uncertainty asylum claimants feel about the future, and the indefinite waiting time for a decision, cause intense feelings of psychological distress, which can lead to suicide.

Added to that are issues around the quality of accommodation, such as the cramped conditions aboard Bibby Stockholm, which has the capacity to house around 500 people in little over 200 rooms smaller than a parking space, described by one MP as a “quasi-prison”.

Asylum Waiting Lists Rocket by 236% as Migrant Housed on Cramped Barge Takes Own Life – Byline Times

A day after the suicide of a man aboard the Bibby Stockholm exclusive data obtained by this newspaper shows migrants waiting three years or more for a decision on their future has more than trebled in the past year

I do - but why should a foreign doctor with known (thanks to the twitter happy immigration solicitor) mental health problems walk into a job with the NHS?

Well, I hope he receives help for his mental health and if/when he gets his asylum granted he will be able to continue his work as a doctor

Clavinova · 13/12/2023 20:30

UK and others can have returns agreements with other safer countries, why not, hardly rocket science

Germany appears to be struggling;

9 Nov 2023
Roughly 300,000 people whose asylum applications have been rejected remain in Germany. The challenges Germany faces in deporting them were on full display last week, when Scholz traveled to Nigeria in a quixotic attempt to convince that country’s leaders to take back 14,000 of their compatriots.
The main hang-up preventing the deportation of most? They lack passports...

One example here;
https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/france-border-force-patrols-beaches-migrant-crossings-english-channel-b1050309.html

Does that limit channel crossings? or has the weather had a greater effect.

Your link says British officers are in an observational role only, so what has that achieved? bear in mind that Labour were widely criticised (by those on the right) for saying they would have greater EU engagement, yet here we are boasting of this!

The pp said "measures" & you ve named one, an extremely weak one at that, we ve tik tok as well.

I hate to say but these don't seem very robust.
