I would divorce my husband if he behaved like Giles Coren did

I read an article in the Mail on Monday about how Giles Coren abused his neighbour who is the mother of an autistic child by pretending to be a delivery driver to gain access to her house in a row about parking. I am the mother of an ASD child and would divorce my husband if he behaved like this. I can’t believe someone who is employed by the BBC has so little control over himself. No wonder he was issued with a police caution. His poor neighbour.

Surely stern Mon would have more sense? Hope so. Whilst we're on relatives of the famous, Joe Johnson, Bozo's brother, is married to Amelia Gentleman, the journalist who investigated the Windrush outrage. What a contrast. Seems that sometimes the Good Fairy turns up at a christening and gives one child all the good stuff then Bad Fairy dumps all the personality defects on another child in the family. GC is particularly talentless and is bloody lucky to have a career solely because his father was beloved in media.

largeprintagathachristie · 15/11/2023 22:59

I think he’s putting his wife in a difficult position- her stuff kind of dances around her husband clearly being known as the biggest wanker Kentish Town and environs has ever seen, whilst she posts about eyeliner, or salads, or her children.

I hadn’t seen her Daily Mail article posted upthread before, though, about how she was attracted by Coren’s “twinkling eyes” and 5 bedroom house. Just yuk.

WildishBambino · 15/11/2023 23:18

Years ago I went to the recording of a R4 comedy programme with Alan Coren. Half way through and for no reason he went on the most appalling racist rant. It obviously didn't make the final broadcast, so yes, I've never quite bought the 'lovely amiable dad' story and I suspect his nepo baby didn't fall far from the tree.

Don’t click that link - it looks suspect. It is not a reputable website as far as I know and definitely not “the times” which is thetimes.co.uk

I have no opinion on Giles Coren but so about cyber security.

TheaBrandt · 15/11/2023 23:23

I don’t feel in the slightest bit sorry for her. His character must have been pretty apparent half way through the first date he hardly disguises his knobbish tendencies.

It’s not a real story though. The DM link was removed. It sounds exaggerated at best to me.

WoollyBat · 16/11/2023 00:49

Urgh he’s so awful. But 54? I’m amazed, I had no idea he was the older sibling. I think of him as being loads younger whereas Victoria gives major big sister vibes.

I often wonder and worry about his wife. The things he’s written about her are so nasty. I remember one moaning about her pregnancy weight gain and being deprived of his “wasp-waisted” chattel, that’s always stuck with me though it’s far from his worst, it’s just so publicly demeaning. I really hope Esther stays with him because she’s similarly horrible because the alternative as a PP suggested is grim.

I read the sofa shagging article in gobsmacked amazement. That he wrote it. That someone published it. Just ew ew ew ew ew!

EachandEveryone · 16/11/2023 01:51

His wife went into it with her eyes wide open shes said wha5 he was like when she fell for his house. She either thought she could tame him or is equally as posh as he is and its normal behaviour in their circles. Sounds like hes stuck in his 30’s. I know someone who lives in W London whos husband is a writer and she said its embarrassing at parties seeing blokes in their 50’s going off to do coke. They are all at it. Its blokes together I wonder where they go these days it used to be the Groucho Club.

CatLoaf · 16/11/2023 02:23

Oh well. I remain an Esther fan

@StormyDaniels
This seems like a strange observation. All of them became individually successful, and then became friends/partners with the people they met at work…seems entirely normal to me

Edited

Hardly a strange observation, 'shocker', the establishment run the media! Most political correspondents on the BBC for example have been to a combination of Oxbridge and private/grammar school. How can they challenge the establishment when they are the establishment! Of course they have their token internships...

@JemimaTab Interesting that you should mention Alan Coren. Is his father the only reason GC is famous ? Does he have any discernible skill or talent of his own ?

No. He's a total nepo baby who thinks he's cleverer than he is because he had an expensive education.

Disgusting man.

In this news report about Amazing Hotels it says Giles chose to leave the Programme in order to do another project.

He says, ‘I’ve got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that I’ve had a knee-trembling new television series commissioned that has the potential to be by far the best thing I’ve done on telly.
'The bad news is that, in terms of scheduling, I have had to choose between this new baby and another series of Amazing Hotels.’

He later thanked the BBC, saying: 'The beautiful way you have gone about this changing of the guard means so, so much to me.’

Anyone know what the “knee trembling new television series” is? The new presenter - Judge Rinder - has appeared on the new series of Amazing Hotels, but I haven’t seen Giles on anything. I really hope it’s not on the BBC. I would definitely make an official complain if the license fee is being used to pay his salary

Giles Coren confirms he is leaving BBC following Twitter spat

Mr Coren, 53, announced he would move on from the broadcaster due to a 'diary clash', almost a year on from facing huge backlash over two tweets that allegedly mocked the death of a journalist.

Anyone who says he is a good writer should look at the Times this morning for his banal review of the Devonshire, written in Oxbridge posho patois. This guy is so overrated

DonnaBanana · 16/11/2023 08:25

You might divorce him but they seem well suited to each other. If you listen to their podcast they clearly riff off of each other. Even the most bizarre people can often find partners they click with, eg Fred and Ross

I listened to a bit of Esther and Giles’ podcast once, but found it too tedious. All I remember is that Giles kept jealously complaining about how Rory and Alistair were being paid £25,000 a week for their (far superior in my opinion) The Rest is Politics podcast. I think comparing Esther and Giles to Fred and Rose West is a bit extreme though! I do wonder what Esther really thinks about the fact that her husband has lost all his TV work and has been issued with a police caution. A little angry nepo baby would definitely not be my first choice of husband, no matter how much he helps with the housework. Definitely rather you than me babe.

Fred and Ross? clues? or am I being dim?

Honestly? I’m not loving all the posts about how awful Esther Walker and Victorian CM are because they are married / related to Giles Coren. His actions are his responsibility.

I suspect that his father was no saint either. He just didn’t have twitter. It hasn’t done Giles Coren any favours to be compared to his father so often.

It was always going to end up there. It's the usual Tattle crew.

I do think he’s lost a lot of work though. That hotels programme, for example. But he still writes for the Times, I think. He’s really benefited from the goodwill towards his father.

The Times seems to be exceptionally loyal to those with the right connections. I think India Knight still has a job with the ST, though we switched to Independent so wouldn't be sure at this stage. But this guy really should not be given any platform and left to become a footnote

WilheminaModel · 16/11/2023 09:27

I agree that Giles’ wife and especially his sister are not responsible for his actions. But Esther writes and is paid to write a lot of articles about being Giles Coren’s wife - the case in point being the one she wrote yesterday for The Times about him being helpful in the house. This is the same house he stormed out of at 11.30 at night in the guise of a delivery driver to verbally abuse his neighbour who is the mother of a disabled child - all over a parking dispute. My point is that I would not tolerate it from my husband. Perhaps as the mother of a disabled child I feel particularly sensitive about this. But also that Esther’s articles don’t seem quite honest, or that they are telling the whole truth. Because while Giles is apparently helping his wife around the house, he was also recently issued with and accepted a police caution for his actions.

I've met her in person a few times as she is the friend of a friend. She is not very nice.

Her big sister is married to Alexander Armstrong.

In what way? What’s she like? Really gone off the times.
