I would divorce my husband if he behaved like Giles Coren did

I read an article in the Mail on Monday about how Giles Coren abused his neighbour who is the mother of an autistic child by pretending to be a delivery driver to gain access to her house in a row about parking. I am the mother of an ASD child and would divorce my husband if he behaved like this. I can’t believe someone who is employed by the BBC has so little control over himself. No wonder he was issued with a police caution. His poor neighbour.

Anyone who says he is a good writer should look at the Times this morning for his banal review of the Devonshire, written in Oxbridge posho patois. This guy is so overrated

"posho patois"😂

I had the displeasure of work experience at one of the broadsheets, It was over 20 years ago but as I had attended a pretty dire south London comprehensive state school and at the time was studying at a red brick uni, I certainly was not made to feel welcome! My 6th former son has been looking at how the industry functions and skill sets needed to enter a career in political broadcasting but he hasn't been to private school, we don't live in Southwest London (I did as a child but in dull suburbs), West London or North London so he is already at a disadvantage as far as I can see!🙄

reallyworriedjobhunter · 16/11/2023 09:46

@Newsenmum She is very self-absorbed and comes from a privileged background. Not really aware of other people's situations (so I could totally imagine her parking in someone's disabled parking space just because it's raining and she doesn't want to walk far/carry shopping far.

When they got married she casually mentioned to me that they spent £15k on flowers. At the time that was my annual salary. Before tax.

Really concerned with clothes, hair, her skin and her weight. She is nice enough to make small talk with.

She says she only does the Daily Mail stuff because it pays very well.

reallyworriedjobhunter · 16/11/2023 09:51

I do feel very sorry for her having to put up with him. I suspect she won't divorce him though as she loves all the trappings of being married to him iyswim.

I wonder if the neighbour is the same child that he publicly threatened to rape and kill?

I'm sure the whole of Mumsnet is grateful to be enlightened by your DH. India Knight is not responsible for her partner but she is responsible for staying with him.

To the OP - I am sorry it has taken such a long time for you to realise what an odious person GC is. There are many other examples about him and many other threads on Mumsnet dating back years.

That is unnecessarily snippy. And he WAS right - the fact that she stayed with her partner doesn't negate her need to make a living even though you might not like it, which I didn't. I am sure you'd be annoyed if you were made responsible for a family member's failings.

Although for a while the comments were switched off under her articles.

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 16/11/2023 09:59

He is vile. The comments he made about the death of a young journalist he did not like were beyond awful. Why would any woman want to be with someone so awful?

Sounds like a horrible person to live next to. All his responses are so over the top, and apparently he thinks they are funny because everyone has always told him he is funny. Nope, not.

SparklingSparkle · 16/11/2023 10:22

I think alcohol plays a big part in both their lives. I used to love Esther’s instagram. He used to be quite funny I loved the thing he did with Sue Perkins. But now he seems bitter and nasty. Social media has done a lot for some celebrities and damaged quite a few including Giles and Danny Baker.

circleback · 16/11/2023 10:35

I think the other part of the India Knight issue is that she chose him over her child. Her child now lives with her father I believe. i’m not saying she should lose her job but you can understand how people are Shock at the whole thing.

Hellenabe · 16/11/2023 10:36

@enchantedsquirrelwood but didn't Indias husband download child porn of kids between 1 and 12 being raped. A category A movie. Apparently he'd been drinking heavily. Right. Not sure I'd see her in the same light plus her daughter is no longer living with her. Bizarre.

Lentilweaver · 16/11/2023 10:38

I used to rather like India Knight. I felt for her, having quite a tumultuous childhood. I liked some- if not all-of her writing, and thought she had talent. But now I think she has completely lost the plot. Plus all her recommendations are incredibly expensive and out of touch with the mood of the nation. I am also not keen on beauty columnists who use Botox.

Busephalus · 16/11/2023 10:49

Assuming they live fairly centrally in london with great transport links, maybe it's time they ditched the car all together

User1775 · 16/11/2023 10:51

He's a classic of his type. Brought up to believe he would inherit the world and everyone would bow and scrape. It must be fucking brutal to realise what he must - he is in his position due to his dad, and everyone loves his sister and hates him. He drinks too much. These types are so fun and vivacious in their 20s but spite and envy fill them with rage and this is what is left. So many of them around, just boring old posh drunks with nothing to contribute and a huge chip on their shoulders. He'll feel it is beneath him to live beside a mother with a disabled child - how can she have the same as him - a house like his? and a private parking space? He is the master of the universe and she should be licking his boots. I think that his neighbour is a hero for exposing him.

What do you mean by “usual Tattle crew”?

I’d imagine a lot of being married to his ilk involves bundling him out of friends’ dinner parties at midnight, after he’s imbibed one bottle too many, and started to accuse his hosts of being child molesting cunts. And expressed a wish to rip their heads off and shit down their throats. And wifey chuckles apologetically and says ‘oh you know Giles. Can’t take him anywhere. See you at yoga on Tuesday’.

WilheminaModel · 16/11/2023 12:06

I know we shouldn’t hold women accountable for the bad behaviour of their husbands, but if India Knight was publishing articles about how handy convicted paedophile Eric Joyce was around the house, would it be any more or less acceptable than Esther’s Mrs Giles Coren output? For really what is the difference? Giles has recently been given a police caution for impersonating a delivery driver and verbally abusing his neighbour late at night while her disabled child was in bed over a sodding parking dispute. Personally I don’t care how helpful he is at home to his wife.

Why would Giles suspect that his neighbour would paint a swastika on his house because of a parking dispute though? Surely the neighbour’s beef was about members of the Coren household using the designated disabled bay rather than him being Jewish? Speculating that he may be the target of antisemitic abuse seems like he is assuming victimhood without actually being the target of any. In fact, Giles was the one sending himself and his wife antisemitic abuse via his alt Twitter account.

https://www.indy100.com/news/giles-coren-twitter-alternative-account-pavel-pilnik-jonathan-nunn-wife-antisemitism-8703366

Giles Coren is a xenophobic, antisemitic, whiny, weasel faced wee cunt with mediocre talent.

I feel so sorry for all his neighbours.

Prelapsarianhag · 16/11/2023 12:33

He's a nepo baby. Famous father and Giles is the disastrously untallented son - and he knows it - that's why he is such a sour puss.

LoreleiG · 16/11/2023 12:37

WilheminaModel · 16/11/2023 09:27

I agree that Giles’ wife and especially his sister are not responsible for his actions. But Esther writes and is paid to write a lot of articles about being Giles Coren’s wife - the case in point being the one she wrote yesterday for The Times about him being helpful in the house. This is the same house he stormed out of at 11.30 at night in the guise of a delivery driver to verbally abuse his neighbour who is the mother of a disabled child - all over a parking dispute. My point is that I would not tolerate it from my husband. Perhaps as the mother of a disabled child I feel particularly sensitive about this. But also that Esther’s articles don’t seem quite honest, or that they are telling the whole truth. Because while Giles is apparently helping his wife around the house, he was also recently issued with and accepted a police caution for his actions.

Edited

So you say, although you've still not produced the Daily Mail link, which has been pulled. Any thoughts as to why that might be?

Why shouldn't Esther write about her actual life? Anyway a police caution is hardly the same. I agree with the pp - it's unfair to bring her into it.

Giles saying that he feared he and his wife would be the target of antisemitic abuse from the neighbour he had abused, and also using an alt Twitter account to send himself antisemitic abuse are textbook examples of D.A.R.V.O. (deny, attack, reverse victim and offender) and a typical characteristic of a narcissist. He pretended to be a delivery driver in order to gain entry to his neighbour’s home so that he could verbally abuse her late at night while her disabled child was upstairs. Then he claimed on his podcast that he feared she would paint a Star of David or a swastika on his house. It sounds unhinged. But it’s absolutely classic narcissism.

Sue Perkins used to work with him a lot. I wonder if she now refuses to, she seems a decent sort with good morals.

WilheminaModel · 16/11/2023 13:21

I definitely read it online in the Mail. I have no idea why it has been pulled. Maybe he’s sicced his lawyers on them. It seems he has form in that respect, and that is what he did when it was reported that his home was being targeted after he mocked and celebrated Dawn Foster’s death.

His pal Sue Perkins obviously didn’t put in a good word for Giles to ever be a presenter on Bake Off though. I also don’t think he’s ever been on any of the Master Chef series, which is surprising for a high profile critic. Jay Rayner, the Guardian critic, is always on Master Chef. I wonder why Giles has never done either of those huge shows. Hmm…
