I would divorce my husband if he behaved like Giles Coren did

I read an article in the Mail on Monday about how Giles Coren abused his neighbour who is the mother of an autistic child by pretending to be a delivery driver to gain access to her house in a row about parking. I am the mother of an ASD child and would divorce my husband if he behaved like this. I can’t believe someone who is employed by the BBC has so little control over himself. No wonder he was issued with a police caution. His poor neighbour.

Anyway for an intelligent man who actually is quite good at writing funny articles, he has totally lost his way.

See also Lawrence Fox. My DH worked with someone who at school with him and said he was a w*nker then, too.

Richard Ayoade is Fox's BIL. All these awkward family gatherings. I wonder if any of Fox's family see him now? Emilia used to do celebrity Gogglebox with him but has been dropped, clearly.

I often wonder this about people who seem to have every advantage.

@Lentilweaver he probably realises that everything he has is as a result of things beyond his control. Makes some people jittery, knowing that their life is largely down to luck. Especially men for some reason ?

I think it may be a colossally out of control ego at play. In his mind, he is brilliant, a genius, so talented etc. and wants to be recognised as such. But people keep ascribing at least part of his success to his father and the old boy network. Which hurts his ego. I suppose it could explain why he flies off the handle if you mention his dad.

Cheesecakefiend · 15/11/2023 20:53

I can't read that article as it's so badly written but I get the gist of it. He sounds awful.

Greenpolkadot · 15/11/2023 20:56

What an absolute arsehole

Yes i was going to say the same thing. Although when I moaned to DH about India K still being employed by the Times he said she wasn't responsible for her partner. Which is true.

India Knight seems to be relegated to the beauty pages most of the time, rather than being allowed to comment on issues of the day.

I think Esther seems very funny from her writing (not counting the Daily Mail - journalists just write for them for big cash and sensationalist headlines.)

I've met her in person a few times as she is the friend of a friend. She is not very nice.

Her big sister is married to Alexander Armstrong.

The80sThe80s · 15/11/2023 21:12

I read The Times but always skip past anything written by Giles Coren - can’t stand him.

CurlewKate · 15/11/2023 21:22

@NumberFortyNorhamGardens "

She does plenty of commenting on Times Radio. I do agree that she isn't responsible for her husband's behaviour, though.

she's not responsible for what he did but her decision to stick by him meant that their relationship and 'stable' homelife was used as a factor in him being given a suspended sentence.

It’s beyond disgusting. It’s about him fucking the family sofa and it being full of his…urgh. Do not recommend you seek it out.

This is fairly normally posh boy talk though. i know several otherwise lovely blokes who talk about "meeting the family" when describing something they wank on.

StormyDaniels · 15/11/2023 21:24

It’s threads like these that make you realise how incestuous parts of the media are. Here David Mitchell is married to Victoria Coren-M, brother of Giles Coren. (Incidentally I remember VCM had Claudia Winkleman as a bridesmaid). Giles Coren’s SIL is married to Alexander Armstrong. I think you have to marry in to get a primetime BBC slot.

Scruffington · 15/11/2023 21:28

Coren is a thin skinned arsehole whose outbursts have (until now) been indulged and then brushed aside. He only has the piddly career he has due to nepotism. As he's all too aware of, which is why he has such hysterical reactions when anyone reminds him.

Good for the neighbour for taking him on. I bet the other residents of the street are hi-fiving her.

NancyJoan · 15/11/2023 21:31

WilheminaModel · 15/11/2023 20:44

Why would Giles suspect that his neighbour would paint a swastika on his house because of a parking dispute though? Surely the neighbour’s beef was about members of the Coren household using the designated disabled bay rather than him being Jewish? Speculating that he may be the target of antisemitic abuse seems like he is assuming victimhood without actually being the target of any. In fact, Giles was the one sending himself and his wife antisemitic abuse via his alt Twitter account.

I don’t think he did, this publication is conflating two separate things that he said regarding considering moving away. The neighbour situation was one reason, the fear of antisemitism was another. I think. I did listen to it, but it was a couple of weeks ago

LoreleiG · 15/11/2023 21:37

What even is UK News? I can’t see the link about the police caution anymore on the Daily Mail.

whiskeyfoxtrotcharlie · 15/11/2023 21:45

He's absolutely ghastly and one of the reasons I never read The Times. I don't rate him as a writer either – it's embarrassing how hard he tries to be witty, subversive and shocking.

DontListenToWhatYouveConsumed · 15/11/2023 21:51

@AzureBlue99 4th option, Jump off a cliff.

After reading 'Dear Kitty' I'm very surprised there wasn't an investigation tbh.

I feel desperately sorry for the neighbour and her child.

BenZodiazapam · 15/11/2023 21:52

To be fair, Coren has always been a grade A knobber. I’m only amazed people are still giving him work.

Chonkadoodle · 15/11/2023 21:54

There is a special place in hell for men who intimidate women. He’s a spoilt, nasty gobshite who doesn’t deserve to be pissed on if he was on fire.

TinyKittenPaw · 15/11/2023 21:55

Have you read the article he wrote about his ‘fat’ son? It was awful.

AlizeeEasy · 15/11/2023 22:03

@StormyDaniels
This seems like a strange observation. All of them became individually successful, and then became friends/partners with the people they met at work…seems entirely normal to me

MajesticWhine · 15/11/2023 22:06

Having read about the incident with the neighbour, I do think that a drink/ drug problem is likely. As well as a personality issue. It's totally unhinged behaviour.
I can't imagine what life is like for his poor wife.

LoreleiG · 15/11/2023 22:13

@WilheminaModel do you have the original Mail link?

Blinkingbonkers · 15/11/2023 22:17

God, that’s awful. Poor neighbour. No wonder the wife wasn’t letting him in the house, he should be chucked out permanently. And with behaviour like this no media outlet should be employing him, ever.

Mummyof287 · 15/11/2023 22:21

Used to watch the hotels programme often and he was all over Monica galetti like a puppy with a bone...always wonder if anything happened between them.
He came across an entitled insecure idiot, and appeared like he might be drunk

FortunataTagnips · 15/11/2023 22:33

While Vile Giles, as he is known among my friends, is clearly a weapons-grade bellend, what the hell is that “news” website? “UK Times”?? I’d be very wary of believing anything I read on it without corroboration from somewhere more respected.
