I would divorce my husband if he behaved like Giles Coren did

I read an article in the Mail on Monday about how Giles Coren abused his neighbour who is the mother of an autistic child by pretending to be a delivery driver to gain access to her house in a row about parking. I am the mother of an ASD child and would divorce my husband if he behaved like this. I can’t believe someone who is employed by the BBC has so little control over himself. No wonder he was issued with a police caution. His poor neighbour.

He is clearly unhinged or an addict of some kind. That guy who knew his dad, that exchange was bizarre. It's a wonder he didn't sue him.

On that hotel programme he was insufferably smug. So glad he lost that gig. I don't like his sister either.

Scenario -

Giles Coren, Lawrence Fox, Owen Smith - shag, marry, avoid?

Okay, I’m a bit ashamed to admit this but I used to have a tiny crush on Lawrence Fox when he was in Lewis and seemed like a fairly reasonable person and not an utter twat, so I’d shag him. Marry Owen Smith - and then very quickly divorce. And Kill Cohen. I don’t think there is any other option for him, he’s hideous.

I’ve worked with David Mitchell And he’s so lovely and I get the feeling Victoria is lovely too. I listened to her discussing her teenage diary and she was clearly incredibly smart as a teenager but with zero ego, even now discussing it. I wanted to her a lot. But they must be so embarrassed being related to Giles. He’s so disgusting it’s unreal. After he said that stuff about his daughter I would have taken my kids far far away from him. Vile.

I've disliked the guy pretty intensely since his casual reference to "the piglets from the local comp". Raging snob apart from anything else.

I think he’s a prick too, but this was a tongue-in-cheek comment as his kids are at a state school

He wrote an article about wanking? Then he is an actual literal as well as figurative wanker.

It’s beyond disgusting. It’s about him fucking the family sofa and it being full of his…urgh. Do not recommend you seek it out.

sergeantsalt · 15/11/2023 19:34

I've thought he was scum of the earth ever since he posted those disgusting tweets about Dawn Foster on the day of her death. All because she pointed out the role nepotism played in his career.

CatLoaf · 15/11/2023 19:35

I think Esther seems very funny from her writing (not counting the Daily Mail - journalists just write for them for big cash and sensationalist headlines.)

Personality disorder.

Personality disorders are rooted in trauma usually so maybe. Did he go to public school? I wonder if it was a boarding school?

JemimaTab · 15/11/2023 19:52

He went to Westminster school - he’d have been a contemporary of Louis Theroux and Adam Buxton. I wonder if they get on.

theduchessofspork · 15/11/2023 19:59

He had a few spats with Dawn Foster, and wrote this when she died

Mr Coren, 51, tweeted: “When someone dies who has trolled you on Twitter, saying vile and hurtful things about you and your family, is it okay to be like, “I’m sorry for the people who loved you, and any human death diminishes me, but can you f* off on to hell now where you belong”?”

A number of Twitter users suspected the tweet was about Ms Foster after she previously accused Mr Coren of only being able to get a job at The Timesbecause of his famous father, Alan.

The man really is a screaming arsehole, on so many levels.

SwedishEdith · 15/11/2023 20:03

Christ, hadn't seen the Michael White exchange before.

CavalierApproach · 15/11/2023 20:04

Pathetic little man

CharlotteStreetW1 · 15/11/2023 20:05

I read a book about a cricket tour by some media type. One of the players remained conspicuously unnamed but was heartily despised by everyone in the end. Sounded like an utter cock. It was mentioned that he wrote for The Sunday Times.

Sometime later, before I knew better, I was reading a book by Giles Coren which mentioned this cricket tour. It didn't take much working out. I'd gone off him by the end of the book.

He has zero self-awareness.

CavalierApproach · 15/11/2023 20:09

I’m still a bit shocked every time I remember that Dawn Foster has died. I didn’t agree with her on everything, not by a long shot, but she was so, so intelligent. And so funny. Thirty-three is incredibly young — she could have done so much in the life she should have had. It was a deeply sad loss.

And instead Giles remains in the world. Pfft

fortnumsfinest · 15/11/2023 20:09

I've never heard anyone say anything complimentary about him

ShelleyCarpenter · 15/11/2023 20:15

I do enjoy a lot of his writing in The Times.

Considering The Times still employs India Knight who is married to a convicted paedophile, I doubt he'll be told to clear his desk.

Yes i was going to say the same thing. Although when I moaned to DH about India K still being employed by the Times he said she wasn't responsible for her partner. Which is true.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 15/11/2023 20:18

Anyway for an intelligent man who actually is quite good at writing funny articles, he has totally lost his way.

See also Lawrence Fox. My DH worked with someone who at school with him and said he was a w*nker then, too.

WilheminaModel · 15/11/2023 20:22

I love Adam Buxton’s podcast. It’s been going for years and Louis Theroux has been a guest multiple times - they always reminisce about their school days. Giles has never been a guest on it. I think that speaks volumes.

Please don't ever mention his father to him.

Nepo Giles blocks and gets very abusive...

MrsHarrisAParis · 15/11/2023 20:33

Coren's article on Gaza and Israel was excellent. And I guess that's why he mentioned the threats to the house and the possibility of antisemitic graffiti. If he did indeed say any of those things because I'm not sure a website with a 'news' story about ghosts is the pinnacle of reliable reporting.

I'm sure the whole of Mumsnet is grateful to be enlightened by your DH. India Knight is not responsible for her partner but she is responsible for staying with him.

To the OP - I am sorry it has taken such a long time for you to realise what an odious person GC is. There are many other examples about him and many other threads on Mumsnet dating back years.

Raspberrymoon49 · 15/11/2023 20:35

He’s a piece of shit, well known how vile he is

I understand that his father was not the benign clubbable man he ipresented as. Not an excuse for his son's appallingness but maybe part of an explanation.

I'm intrigued to read that, that is such a shame to see. I grew up with Alan Coren's articles in Punch and his columns in The Times, and really looked forward to his appearances on "The News Quiz". I think that is the first time I've heard anything like that about him. Obviously you must have good reason to be of this opinion, but I daren't ask you how you know it.

Dymaxion · 15/11/2023 20:40

I often wonder this about people who seem to have every advantage.

@Lentilweaver he probably realises that everything he has is as a result of things beyond his control. Makes some people jittery, knowing that their life is largely down to luck. Especially men for some reason ?

Why would Giles suspect that his neighbour would paint a swastika on his house because of a parking dispute though? Surely the neighbour’s beef was about members of the Coren household using the designated disabled bay rather than him being Jewish? Speculating that he may be the target of antisemitic abuse seems like he is assuming victimhood without actually being the target of any. In fact, Giles was the one sending himself and his wife antisemitic abuse via his alt Twitter account.
