I read an article in the Mail on Monday about how Giles Coren abused his neighbour who is the mother of an autistic child by pretending to be a delivery driver to gain access to her house in a row about parking. I am the mother of an ASD child and would divorce my husband if he behaved like this. I can’t believe someone who is employed by the BBC has so little control over himself. No wonder he was issued with a police caution. His poor neighbour.

A propos of Jay Rayner, I actually emailed him once in a very fangirlish way and he responded very kindly, I was expecting to be ignored but he seemed very down to earth and kind.

Can I just say, if anyone hasn't yet scrolled down X to the video of the guy expalaining how that daft sex scene could physically happen - do it now.

I don’t personally fancy Jay Rayner but I can see why other people might. He seems like a man in touch with his sensual side. He’s got a nice easy way about him and I’d be surprised if he’s had a Coren style tantrum since nursery school.

I think Jay Rayner has the same appeal that Pete Davidson (6 foot 4) has. He’s a jazz musician as well as a critic. He’s obviously very cool and comfortable in his own skin and has the crumpled shirt aesthetic that suggests he genuinely does not seem to give a shit what other people think of him. While, if I think back to that hotel Programme, Giles looks like his mother dressed him. And according to another thread he lies about being 5 foot 9 when he’s not and also wears built up platform shoes.

I love Jay Rayner too. I remember how he was very grumpy about Deliciously Ella & all that she stood for (in terms of ‘clean eating’ & making all sorts of wild claims about food & wellness). I think he also complained that her restaurant weren’t disposing of their rubbish correctly 😂.

Unlike angry little Giles, Jay Rayner looks like the sort of man who could more than handle himself in a fight, but also seems like the sort of man who doesn’t get into fights. And that is very attractive.

I used to love Out to Lunch with Jay Rayner, which I started watching during lockdown. Jay has a great rapport with his guests and it’s always very interesting and well researched. Especially compared to the Esther and Giles show which is totally half arsed and just seems like privileged people complaining about their first world problems, like whether to go to their country house in breach of lockdown rules.

There’s no way he’s 5 ft 9 - I met him briefly many years ago and he was about the same height as me (5 ft 7), but I strongly suspected he was wearing built-up shoes because he was walking very oddly.

He has said he is 5 foot 9 in his own column. There are lots of photos of him standing next to people who are 5 foot 9 and taller though and he is clearly not that height.

He gets paid for writing like that? I take it the Editor has no idea how bad it is and they just slap it in the paper unread. Bloody hell.

Monica is 5'.6". GC is not 3 inches taller unless there is something wrong with every camera.

Maybe his platform shoe heels add on a couple of inches though.

Giles also has massive issues around his own weight/food intake, judging by what he’s recently - and not so recently - written. What he wrote about his then four year old son (who now is apparently a ‘Mumsnet-sporty’ 12-year old) was seriously unhinged.

He’s disgustingly judgy about everyone’s weight, it’s no wonder his wife is obsessive about her own and is a RL teeny tiny.

I’m sure I remember reading a really nasty column Giles wrote on Rishi Sunak, and about his short trousers, in which he was especially sneering about the fact the PM is 5 foot 7. I’m sure Giles can’t be more than 5 foot 7 and absolutely hates being short. Can anyone find it? I don’t subscribe to The Times any more so can’t look beyond the firewall.

It reminds me of the fact that I once worked with a man who was obese and always made fun of fat people.

I have an acquaintance who is very rude about overweight people, particularly women. It stems from her own fears about weight (she is an average weight and has spent most of her adult life on a diet, terrified of putting on a lb). Her partner is one of those naturally incredibly rake thin men who struggle to gain weight and feels that fat people are just out of control greedy pigs. I’m sure he’s the one who passed the fear onto his partner.

I worked with a man who did that. He was one of the rudest, most arrogant people I've ever met.

Had to look up what BDE meant (and am not sure about Jay Rayner having it!), but it sounds like the absolute opposite of GC- he comes across as incredibly needy and incapable of coping with any criticism at all. He actually reminds me a bit of a right wing Owen Jones. And frankly, both of them need to spend less time screeching at people on Twitter.

I think you’re definitely right that Giles is lying about/exaggerating his height. Here is a photo of him with his Amazing Hotels replacement Rob Rinder, who says he is 5 foot 8. Giles is clearly at least an inch shorter. So unless Rob Rinder is actually 5 foot 10/11 and pretending to be 5 foot 8 there is no way that Giles is actually 5 foot 9.

I am just shy of 6 foot and it’s amazing how many men, it’s always men, lie about being 6 foot. It’s ridiculous how many times I’ve looked down onto the tops of so many heads of men who proclaim to be 6 foot.
