To be genuinely shocked by the apparent illiteracy of Andrea Jenkyns?

Have we really reached the point where it is acceptable for a senior MP to publish a serious (presumably) document that is barely legible?! It's not a text or a tweet or a Mumsnet post for goodness' sake. It reads as though she spoke it into her phone and hoped for the best. If this is what passes for communication nowadays, no wonder people struggle to connect and constantly misunderstand each other.

@cardibach "Why would diversity mean not being able to construct a sentence?"

It doesn't. But it does mean giving opportunities to people who for whatever reason have less privileged backgrounds and fewer educational advantages.

Nobody in the U.K. has had so few educational opportunities that poor grammar is the result. Someone with English as an Additional Language, the; I’d agree with you. I’m an English teacher.

luckylavender · 14/11/2023 17:25

Embarrassing

luckylavender · 14/11/2023 17:26

TheKnittedCharacter · 14/11/2023 15:47

Shocking! She’s a MP ffs. It makes her look as thick as mince.

I've seen her interviews enough. She is.

luckylavender · 14/11/2023 17:27

Littlelucas · 14/11/2023 15:52

I understand her letter completely, not sure what the issue is.

I guess at least she doesn't resort to calling people of the opposing party "scum" like a certain possible future deputy prime minister shudder

The issue is there should be standards in public life

LlynTegid · 14/11/2023 17:30

I'm not shocked, should be, but know how low the Tories have sunk over the last few years.

donquixotedelamancha · 14/11/2023 17:31

That letter is terrible. It's embarassing that an MP not only has such poor literacy but didn't even get an important letter checked.

That said, it still communicates it's point better than OP. I miss the days when MN vipers were such pedantic arseholes that no-one dared post without any context at all.

CrashyTime · 14/11/2023 16:47

It is very simple, she is saying that they got the biggest majority since Thatcher because Boris read the public mood correctly on Brexit, and he also seemed to have a connection with the public before that (I never understood this aspect of his public appeal but Brexit was the biggie, the Elephant in the Room, top line politicians thinking they had the right to undermine that vote was sickening to behold) RS has not even been elected LOL, it isn`t difficult to get her sentiment, they are repeating the thing they got right on Brexit in reverse, instead of getting the public mood right they have a guy who nobody knows anything about, no one relates to and who is unelected parading about pretending to be a PM! It is laughable to watch, but the not funny bit is the truly chilling Circus Of Horrors that will populate the government if the opposition get the protest (against RS The Unelected) vote going to them, I saw YC being interviewed the other day and felt shock that she was still around and potentially in a new government soon! It was very sobering to think that politicians of this low calibre who absolutely disgraced the position they hold over Brexit could actually return to power.

You are Andrea Jenkyns and I claim my £5!

Everanewbie · 14/11/2023 17:31

If you're equally appalled by the tweet yesterday from Feryal Clark, a Labour MP then YANBU.

However, if you are making this point from a place of political tribalism and choose to overlook Feryal Clark's incorrect multiple use of apostrophe , then YABU.

Hibiscrubbed · 14/11/2023 17:32

Oh, that is embarrassing. 😂

What tweet? Why do posters keep expecting everyone to know what the fuck they are on about?

Everanewbie · 14/11/2023 17:36

@donquixotedelamancha hopefully the attached explained what the fuck I was on about.

Flickersy · 14/11/2023 17:37

It is to be hoped that our elected representatives in government would have more of a command of the English language.

Between automatic spelling and grammar checks and a human assistant which I'm sure she has, I don't think she can claim ADHD etc as an excuse. It's an official government letter, not a post on Facebook.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/11/2023 17:38

@CrashyTime well I guess we all see things differently- I for one think Yvette cooper is a very smart ,classy lady and a great debater and so do my friends of all political persuasions.

Ms Jenkyns on the other hand in my view is none of these things.

Mr Johnson did not read the mood correctly, he was up against a candidate that lots of the centre ground didn't want to vote for and he lied to the non political about what the Brexit bonuses would be- people like Andrea jenkyns or Johnson don't care- they are making damn good money in the short term with very little obvious ability - let's see what amazing job she gets once out of office. Maybe GB news or the Mail will give her a slot!!

CrashyTime · 14/11/2023 17:38

cardibach · 14/11/2023 17:09

Why would diversity mean not being able to construct a sentence? It’s not only Eton that teaches that!
This seems a really prejudiced statement against people from less privileged backgrounds - though I’m aware you don’t mean it that way really. If we are talking about very elderly people, then they might not have had a full education (though my dad, who left school at 14) had extremely accurate grammar. Someone of Jenkyns’ generation had a thorough education provided by the state.
I disagree wit( some of what JRM said about grammar because he’s just wrong - but (and it kills me to say this) he’s not wrong that professional communication should be grammatical. It’s not rocket science.

It doesnt matter nowadays everybody has their face in a phone 24/7, they cant spell either, the phone tells them how to spell and they think grammar is a school somewhere. She is just playing to the gallery of people who cant construct things other than illiterate texts and tweets IMO, they got lucky playing to the very divided gallery over Brexit but their latest attempts at trying to appeal to "public opinion" (no more tents on Oxford St. etc.) are backfiring like an Elephants bum, the idea that RS would have anything in common with common people is far fetched to say the least, BJ on the other hand claimed to have had encounters with such people in places like broom cupboards and the like, or so I was told the other day?

I’m fairly appalled, but somewhat less so than about Jenkyns, whose letter was appalling on several counts.

cardibach · 14/11/2023 17:42

Sorry @CrashyTime ’m nit entirely sure what you are saying.
I don’t care who else can’t be bothered to write accurately. I expect people actually governing the country to be able to do so.

Are you labouring under the misapprehension that we have to give equal weight to our political mockery? We’re not media outlets. Or hosting a hustings…

Everanewbie · 14/11/2023 17:36

@donquixotedelamancha hopefully the attached explained what the fuck I was on about.

Ok. Yes, this is bad. It’s a tweet though, not an official letter. Autocorrect flings apostrophes around with gay abandon. Should he have proofread it? Yes. Do we always proof read for social media? No.
Should Jenkyns have got it right in an official letter? Of course. Your whataboutery is transparent and also not equivalent.
By the way - does the chaos revealed in the tweet appal you at all?

CrashyTime · 14/11/2023 17:45

Crikeyalmighty · 14/11/2023 17:38

Of course he read the mood correctly, the voters voted to leave! You can`t bring people up on stories of war heroes storming beaches etc. for the right to freedom and the vote then try to overturn the first really meaningful vote people get offered, a primary school child could tell us that, he just stuck his tail on the right donkey, but that is how politics works.

cardibach · 14/11/2023 17:47

@CrashyTime what did the voters vote for though? Several different things I’d say.
Irrelevant to whether Johnson is a decent politician/person or Jenkyns able to write clearly though.

DarkDarkNight · 14/11/2023 17:48

Wow that’s very poor isn’t it? Apparently she is blaming ADHD. If there is a reason for her poor spelling and grammar all the more reason to have someone proof read it.

It reads very badly, it’s more like a stream of consciousness iPhone note than an official letter. How embarrassing for her.
