To be genuinely shocked by the apparent illiteracy of Andrea Jenkyns?

Have we really reached the point where it is acceptable for a senior MP to publish a serious (presumably) document that is barely legible?! It's not a text or a tweet or a Mumsnet post for goodness' sake. It reads as though she spoke it into her phone and hoped for the best. If this is what passes for communication nowadays, no wonder people struggle to connect and constantly misunderstand each other.

It's perfectly understandable, albeit poorly punctuated.

AutumnCrow · 14/11/2023 15:13

It's semi-literate rubbish.

minou123 · 14/11/2023 15:25

It isn't great.

I understood what she was trying, and failing, to say, but she really should have asked someone to proof read it.

As the former under Secretary of State for Education, I give her a D-. Poor, needs to try harder.

ilovesooty · 14/11/2023 15:26

She was a minister in the department of education at one point.

She's also a classless, mannerless woman who I hope will lose her seat at the next election.

StarlightLady · 14/11/2023 15:27

YANBU.

waitholdup · 14/11/2023 15:28

YABU for not posting what you are complaining about

AtomicBlondeRose · 14/11/2023 15:32

That's terrible. I don't mind the "straight talking", or even the slang, but I do object terribly to all the comma splices. It's a true sign of someone who doesn't read, in my opinion.

MerryMarigold · 14/11/2023 15:33

It's bad. Both in content, logic and grammar. Oh dear!

TheresaCrowd · 14/11/2023 15:34

I think 'barely legible' is pushing it a bit far, unless someone isn't particularly good at reading and comprehension.

It's very poorly written though.

Mummymummy89 · 14/11/2023 15:35

Thank you to the pps who posted the transcript.

Now I've read it, yanbu. The second paragraph doesn't have a single main clause, in any of the sentences!

Mummymummy89 · 14/11/2023 15:37

Just spotted a comma splice in the penultimate para too.

Surely you'd get a colleague to read over something before clicking send...?

Edit - There are comma splices all over the place.

Scruffington · 14/11/2023 15:37

She needed that little Word paperclip fella of yore to pop up and say 'did you mean to write this illiterate shite?'.

To be genuinely shocked by the apparent illiteracy of Andrea Jenkyns?
Skodacool · 14/11/2023 15:39

I agree, it’s dreadful.

SwedishEdith · 14/11/2023 15:39

I'm not defending her at all but I'm sure she's said before that she's dyslexic. You'd expect someone in her position to get everything proof read, if that's the case. I suspect she doesn't though.

Papillon23 · 14/11/2023 15:43

What I really don't understand is that they employ staff. Surely even if your own grammar is dreadful you'd then make sure you employed someone who could check what you wrote?!

CurlewKate · 14/11/2023 15:45

<shrugs> It's perfectly clear what she means. That's what's important.

TheKnittedCharacter · 14/11/2023 15:47

Shocking! She’s a MP ffs. It makes her look as thick as mince.

Iamnotthe1 · 14/11/2023 15:47

ilovesooty · 14/11/2023 15:26

She was a minister in the department of education at one point.

She's also a classless, mannerless woman who I hope will lose her seat at the next election.

The boundaries of her constituency have been redrawn and now include an area which typically supports Labour and Green candidates. It's possible she'll be out.

She has been sending out a newsletter to persuade these new potential new voters to support her. It's ironic that, in it, she has claimed that she has had a personal hand in ensuring all secondaries in her former constituency are all good/outstanding.

DupontsYellowDressingGown · 14/11/2023 15:50

It reminded me of one of those unhinged Nextdoor posts

VimtoVimto · 14/11/2023 15:52

The content sounds like it was written by Nadine, though in that case I’d hope it would be better edited.

You would think she could have asked someone to read over it especially as it would be made public.

Littlelucas · 14/11/2023 15:52

I understand her letter completely, not sure what the issue is.

I guess at least she doesn't resort to calling people of the opposing party "scum" like a certain possible future deputy prime minister shudder

fearfuloffluff · 14/11/2023 15:54

Doesn't surprise me at all.

These are the people who got us out of the EU despite not knowing what a common market is, years after the referendum.
