Have we really reached the point where it is acceptable for a senior MP to publish a serious (presumably) document that is barely legible?! It's not a text or a tweet or a Mumsnet post for goodness' sake. It reads as though she spoke it into her phone and hoped for the best. If this is what passes for communication nowadays, no wonder people struggle to connect and constantly misunderstand each other.

“Yes, Boris, the man who won the Conservative Party a massive majority, was unforgivable enough.”

I’d agree Boris is unforgivable, but I think that’s not what she meant. And I think someone with these communication skills should be nowhere near power. She’s a liability.

Crikeyalmighty · 14/11/2023 15:56

I cannot believe the people of Morley and outwood think she was a remotely suitable person . They had lovely Ed Balls too. Pretty sure that was 'all' about Brexit !

The women is charmless and rude with some really nasty views but totally fancies herself.

I understand her letter completely, not sure what the issue is.

I guess at least she doesn't resort to calling people of the opposing party "scum" like a certain possible future deputy prime minister shudder

But giving the middle finger to crowds outside Downing Street is really classy, right?

TheKnittedCharacter · 14/11/2023 16:00

That Spectator article is perfect. 😂

Littlelucas · 14/11/2023 16:02

Well to be fair a baying mob were shouting abuse at her, which she says had been going on for years and included death threats.

She didn't call the majority of the voting population "scum".

Well that's all fine then.

AgentProvocateur · 14/11/2023 16:04

It’s shockingly bad. Yes, it can be ‘understood’ but is this semi-literate person the calibre of MP we want? This is a formal letter that she knew would be published. If she’s dyslexic, she should have got it checked.

Coldia · 14/11/2023 16:06

Gosh.

It's very poor.

MadeForThis · 14/11/2023 16:06

Was she drunk when it was written?

JennyForeigner · 14/11/2023 16:06

'Yes Boris... was unforgiveable enough'

Absolute lol. What a dingbat.

cardibach · 14/11/2023 16:08

CurlewKate · 14/11/2023 15:45

<shrugs> It's perfectly clear what she means. That's what's important.

That’s the bare minimum of what matters - for professional communication the bar should be much higher. I’m fact, you only know what she means sometimes because you already know…not because of the letter, but because of the situation.
She does appear to say Johnson is unacceptable though, so we agree on that. (Paragraph 2 - the sentence fragment which refers to him).

Abitofalark · 14/11/2023 16:09

What passes for communication these days is starting a thread without an explanation of what it is about.

I’ve just commented on that gem without first reading your post!
indeed. It’s only comprehensible because we already know what she means.

muddyford · 14/11/2023 16:09

DH chaired a large NHS board and one member presented a paper written in the then text-speak. He didn't understand until someone else explained. This was a paper circulated to board members and would then have been filed for goodness knows how long. She was asked to rewrite it in adult language.

MrsJellybee · 14/11/2023 16:09

Written by someone who doesn’t understand what constitutes a sentence.

Pippim · 14/11/2023 16:10

Isn't she the one who won Ed Balls old seat?

Night409 · 14/11/2023 16:11

It’s fine.

If you can’t read it, then perhaps the issue is with your literacy or comprehension skills instead.

Neither did Rayner.

Iamnotthe1 · 14/11/2023 16:13

She has blamed the errors on her ADHD which is actually a really offensive comment to make. By saying that ADHD is the cause of her poor written communication (and so it's not something she could do anything about), she is essentially saying that those with ADHD shouldn't aspire to have good written communication. Hardly the message a former education MP should be pushing.

commonground · 14/11/2023 16:14

This from Yahoo: In response, Jenkyns pointed out that she has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which can affect spelling and grammar, and accused those criticising her of being "sanctimonious"

Oh, that's a shame she said that. DD has really quite debilitating ADHD but the one thing she excels at is spelling and grammar. So I'm not sure that is a great excuse.

That said, it does read like it was fired off 'from the hip' and maybe emotion got the better of sense.

It's clear what she meant:

"Rishi's Machivellian involvement in getting rid of [...] Boris Johnson [...] was unforgiveable enough."

I am far more concerned by her appalling opinions than her poor punctuation.

I’m a teacher. I can read and understand lots of things which are ungrammatical, poorly constructed and (though these done apply to a typed letter) poorly spelled and scruffily written. that doesn’t mean any of them are good enough, does it? They wouldn’t pass GCSE, for example.
I don’t know about you, but I’d like my representatives to be able to construct decent English. But then I haven’t had enough of experts, either 🤷‍♀️

DuesToTheDirt · 14/11/2023 16:15

Yeah, illiterate.

"How long are MP's going to sit on their hands and let he and his out-of-touch advisors..."

Plus, she doesn't seem to know what constitutes a sentence.

Sallyh87 · 14/11/2023 16:15

I don’t agree with the content of the letter but I fully understand what she is saying.

I want caring politicians who will support the NHS and other welfare activities, and obviously have a grasp of economics. I don’t really care if their grammar is up to scratch.

Needless to say I won’t be voting for her party but it’s not because she can’t write!
