To ration the toilet paper

4 of us in this house. And we are getting through a minimum of 3 rolls a day. Bearing in mind I’m out at work and kids are at school. The final straw was me getting a fresh roll out at 7pm and going to the toilet just now and finding the roll empty. WTAF are they doing with it?! I’ve lost the plot and given them a roll each and told them they best make it last til the next delivery comes on Tuesday. Guess I’ll work out who the culprit is based on who comes asking for more first. Seriously tho, a whole roll in less than 4 hours!! And I’ve been for one wee in that time. I never thought I’d be the type of loon to impose toilet roll restrictions but it’s getting ridiculous. Sometimes I’ll go the the bathroom and find 2 brand new empty rolls on the floor over the course of half a day! Out of nowhere. Am I being unreasonable to impose rations until i can work what the hell is going on with it?

OMG, you have a 12 year old boy, do you really need this spelled out?!

limefrog · 12/11/2023 05:36

by giving them a roll each I can see which one is over using whether for a valid reason or not.

I imagine that if they really don't want to tell you, they will just buy their own.
I get your frustration but what you are doing is quite humiliating for your kids.

Lovedecorations · 10/11/2023 12:14

Same. I can use a roll in one go on the toilet if I'm having a flare up.

I'd have been mortified as a teen to be restricted on toilet roll.

I am very lucky and thankful @Lovedecorations that when I get flare-ups they are not quite as bad as yours, but I do still get through an awful lot of toilet paper in one s(h)itting!

I eventually realised that I needed to flush the toilet after every wipe, or the build up in the toilet pan itself became unflushable. I know that there are several reasons why flushing immediately might not be good for the planet, particularly environmentally, but trying to deal with a blocked up toilet and/or drain was certainly not good for me.

I do hope that both you and your GP are continuing to try to find a reasonable method of at least reducing your number of flare-ups, and that you are indeed very successful 🌻

I’d guess your sons hit puberty. My friend couldn’t fathom where her toilet paper was going and then found it in a plastic bag under her sons bed lol.

Those people who are saying that if op restricts paper temporarily will humiliate the children, what do you suggest? Because I think giving a roll to each child and seeing who needs to ask for another as they've almost ran out will be an easy way of finding out who is using it all and may reveal if they have any health issues or wasteful habits. Surely it's good that op finds this out as can seek help from doctor or give advice on not being so wasteful etc. No one needs to be humiliated. I don't think asking my mum for loo roll would have humiliated me! I'd have happily shouted 'need more loo roll!'. Hop you get to bottom of it all Op!

My money is on someones using wads of it for every single wipe!

Zanatdy · 12/11/2023 08:18

24 rolls a week is an insane amount, as is one roll in a few hours. There’s no way it’s being used sensible or correctly as you’d never get through that amount. Yes girls on periods will use more but constantly going through this amount is madness. As are posters claiming you can’t ration toilet roll. Yes you can, and you can definitely ask who is wasting it.

AhBiscuits · 12/11/2023 08:18

I need to know who the culprit was.

NetZeroZealot · 12/11/2023 08:36

OP, is there anyone who come into your house regularly who could be stealing it? e.g. a cleaner. This happened to a friend of mine ...

TheBookAccordingtoIsaac · 12/11/2023 08:41

I wonder if one of the girls is stuffing their bra's with toilet paper for school. Just thinking about my own pre-puberty rountine.

Luddite26 · 12/11/2023 08:52

Which toilet roll are you using or have I missed this?

SquitMcJit · 12/11/2023 08:58

Re Who Gives a Crap - does anyone know where it’s actually made? I was going to try it but I think it might be made overseas and then shipped over to Uk. Which definitely puts me off buying it?

Nonplusultra · 12/11/2023 09:00

I keep our extra rolls in a basket and top up when it’s low, so the ones down the very bottom could have been there for a year or two because I throw the new ones on top.

I tipped out the basket recently when something else had fallen in and I couldn’t get over the size difference in the toilet rolls. The old one, is about half an inch taller as well.

I’ve noticed that we were getting through a lot more rolls but I was putting it down to teenager needs, but the shrinkage is also playing a part.

I just looked it up and there’s more info on their website now than there was last time I looked. It’s made in China. So I guess it’s about working out if the other environmental benefits they do (supporting water charities, using bamboo, eco friendly packaging) make up for this.

sorry to derail!

Do you have any teenage boys in the house?

@Duechristmas & a fair few others.

so you haven't read the thread?

At least do everyone the courtesy of reading the OP's posts. MNHQ couldn't have made that easier! (See next/see all on their posts )

over 150 posts in, you don't think that might have been mentioned?!?!

repetitive asking the same (answered) question makes threads really boring.

They covered this on Radio 4 this week on Sliced Bread. The topic was is Toilet Paper the best thing since sliced bread and they went through loads of different types including Who gives a crap, bamboo etc. unfortunately the best for the environment was recycled unbleached paper which looks awful in the bathroom ( his words not mine) it was interesting you might find it in iPlayer.

@TheBookAccordingtoIsaac

i don't think girls do that these days!

partly I don't think it's such a big thing these days to pad out bras & if it is there's so much online that you can buy cheaply with less hassle.

The one who used all the soap now bizarrely doesn’t wipe half the time she goes for a wee, otherwise I’d be convinced it was her. She is the “peculiar” one, usually if things go missing she’s the culprit, breaks stuff and doesn’t tell anyone, puts empty milk jugs back in the fridge etc. But since I know she doesn’t wipe after wees every time I don’t as this is her. Unless she’s found another use for it.

Not sure if anyone else mentioned this as haven't read all the thread, but best to warn your dd that not wiping after weeing can cause UTIs

SquitMcJit · 12/11/2023 10:03

Thanks @Doggymummar I’ll listen to that.

My dd used to make beds for her cuddly toys out of toilet paper

I remember making clothes for my strawberry shortcake doll out of loo roll. I blame Blue peter 😂

SkiingIsHeaven · 12/11/2023 10:43

Is your husband an avid wanker?

Smellslikesummer · 12/11/2023 11:44

@Notjustmesurely who was it at the end? Did someone ask for more or did the consumption level drop now that it is not anonymous anymore?

S4mJune · 12/11/2023 12:35

Are they boys?
If they are, I think you probably already know where it's going.

Reigateforever · 12/11/2023 12:55

This will stop any misuse, if you bought this. Well, before the soft loo paper it was used everywhere.
