To ration the toilet paper

4 of us in this house. And we are getting through a minimum of 3 rolls a day. Bearing in mind I’m out at work and kids are at school. The final straw was me getting a fresh roll out at 7pm and going to the toilet just now and finding the roll empty. WTAF are they doing with it?! I’ve lost the plot and given them a roll each and told them they best make it last til the next delivery comes on Tuesday. Guess I’ll work out who the culprit is based on who comes asking for more first. Seriously tho, a whole roll in less than 4 hours!! And I’ve been for one wee in that time. I never thought I’d be the type of loon to impose toilet roll restrictions but it’s getting ridiculous. Sometimes I’ll go the the bathroom and find 2 brand new empty rolls on the floor over the course of half a day! Out of nowhere. Am I being unreasonable to impose rations until i can work what the hell is going on with it?

I do get your frustration honestly (my DD is the same) but it’s toilet roll.

If I came on here saying my partner was rationing my toilet roll, MNers would lose their minds and rightly so.

Toilet roll should never be rationed unless you are getting into debt buying it.

Don’t buy expensive stuff as I find it’s thick and doesn’t last long.
Don’t but too cheap as you end up using more.

Mariposista · 10/11/2023 10:00

I am guilty as charged when it comes to TP.

Catza · 10/11/2023 10:05

It does seem excessive. We are three adults and a 13y/o in the house and we use about 2 rolls every 3 weeks. The only time I had issues like you describe is when I shared a house with students - three of use shared upstairs bathroom and a roll would go within half a day. One of the girls was Italian and constantly complained about lack of bidet so I think I know where rolls used to go. I think allocating the rolls to kids is a good shout not in a sense of rationing but so that you know who is using more and can have a conversation with them about what needs they have and whether these could be better met in other ways.
Empty rolls on the floor would be a lot more triggering for me and everyone would get a demonstration of how to deal with an empty toilet roll!

Bluetrews25 · 10/11/2023 10:26

The cheap stuff is false economy as you have to use loads of it as it's so thin.
The thicker 3 ply stuff means you can fold 2 sheets to wipe either front or back.
Are they scrunchers (use loads) or folders (tend to use less)?

Sounds like someone has hygiene worries.

OldInvisibleandangry · 10/11/2023 10:33

My ex used to get through two rolls a day. He also crapped 4-6 times a day.

it wasn’t the reason we split but it was one of the many things that confirmed the decision was right. I had no idea how angry I was at his toileting habits.
YANBU. Divorce them all and make a loo roll fortress to live in.

ApplesAndOranges5 · 10/11/2023 10:39

DS has IBS and so we go through quite a bit of toilet paper. I’d say for you OP, it is probably a mixture of one being overly hygenic, periods and your DS ‘doing his business’.

Poor man. Sounds like he might have had Inflammatory Bowel Disease or a similar medical condition.

Beamur · 10/11/2023 10:44

Excessive loo roll use in our house is linked to OCD but I know the culprit.
That plus the high level of consumption of soap makes me wonder if you have a child or two with some issues around hygiene? Any other signs of anxiety?

PickledOnionCrisps · 10/11/2023 10:46

Maybe speak to everyone individually and see if there’s anything they need to tell you. It may be something that they’re embarrassed to tell you about and that’s the reason for using more loo roll. The rationing seems a bit totalitarian.

OldInvisibleandangry · 10/11/2023 10:47

He had IBS (not inflammatory) but refused to stay away from the triggers

that was meant to be a reply but the function didn’t work.

If my partner was rationing it because I was using a whole roll a day for nothing other than wees and poos and the odd nose blow I’d admit I either had a problem or was just being unreasonable using so much.

The one who used all the soap now bizarrely doesn’t wipe half the time she goes for a wee, otherwise I’d be convinced it was her. She is the “peculiar” one, usually if things go missing she’s the culprit, breaks stuff and doesn’t tell anyone, puts empty milk jugs back in the fridge etc. But since I know she doesn’t wipe after wees every time I don’t as this is her. Unless she’s found another use for it.

Does DS wipe after every wee?

But a few posters have admitted using lots of toilet roll themselves.

Should they have it rationed by their partners?

I think lots of things should be rationed if someone is wasting it.
Toilet roll should not be one of them.

Painto · 10/11/2023 11:09

@Itsnotchristmasyet so why can't whoever is using it just explain what the problem is?

I would not put up with someone(s) using it all so I go without.

They will ask for more when they need it. If two of them can make it last more than a day but one has used all theirs by bedtime I’ll at least know who’s wasting it. But I’ll be damned if I’m spending more than a tenner a week on bloody bog roll for no reason.

That's about 4 sheets per day each!

TastesLikeStrawberriesOnASummerEvening · 10/11/2023 11:13

Crikey, I have IBS and even I don't use that much.

ManateeFair · 10/11/2023 11:14

If this is a relatively recent development, I'm wondering whether someone in house has developed an OCD type thing around wiping/cleaning.

It's about 9 sheets per day. Boys are at work all day, kiddo at school so I guess it is mostly just me and I don't use a lot. I recon we don't buy any more than two large costco packs a year. We don't ration toilet roll and happy to buy more just never seem to need it more often than that ( unless someone has bad tummy)

SauronsArsehole · 10/11/2023 11:27

Notjustmesurely · 09/11/2023 23:45

12, 13 and 15. All perfectly capable of responsible toilet roll usage.

Boys or girls?

girls could be going through heavier than normal periods and/or the period shits and needing to use more.

also buy black dog poop bags for pad/tampon disposal. Black bag hides contents. Make sure it’s all on top of cistern as reminder.

boys? Wanking. Casually point out to the loo roll sticks and is itchy when it does.

SauronsArsehole · 10/11/2023 11:28

Also to add I’ve noticed the quality of my usual loo roll has dropped, price increased and needing to use more. It could also be that.

Sloelydoesit · 10/11/2023 11:32

I was delighted to buy 72 rolls of Andrex for £30 last week. Simply due to the excessive loo roll usage in this house.

So they have to ask you if they can have more?

Sorry but that’s such a shitty thing to do and bordering on controlling.

I get your frustration if you think it’s being wasted but I highly doubt one of your kids is just chucking it in the bin for a laugh.

They are obviously using it for something and whatever it is, it isn’t something they want to share with you.
By getting them to ask you for more toilet roll, you are getting them to admit to something they may not feel comfortable admitting.

If you’re struggling to afford it then perhaps ration something else instead.
