To think her attitude stunk?

Went into branch today to get a print of of my statement (needed for new job) and I got told to go to the desk.

Which I did and then the woman serving me was like “we don’t do that at this desk, I’ll do it for you just this time but next time just remember” “I was told to come to this desk?” “Like I said we don’t do it here, like can’t you just use your app and transfer it?”

There was a printer right next to her and she did print it off. I just don’t think such a simple request, needed so much attitude? Honestly her voice is full of annoyance.

She shouldn't have been so snotty with you. It is quite simple to access your statements online but if you don't own a home printer then they aren't the type of thing that you would want to be printing at the local library!

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 09/11/2023 19:12

And anyway, if it wasn't for customers like you she would soon be out of a job seeing as they're doing their utmost to close all the banking branches down and force it all online only!!!

ahh the old ‘I pay your wages’ take on the situation.

sipsqueak · 09/11/2023 19:17

Bank branches are very weird places in general. And unfortunately bad customer service is pretty standard nowadays. My advice would be to just move on from that unpleasant incident and get yourself used to online/mobile banking so that you don't have to bother visiting the branch ever again.

I haven’t been inside a branch for 5 years at least. I do everything through the app and get pdfs of my statement sent to me. I asked HR in the new company if I could forward that on to them and they said no it had to be a physical copy.

Nothing wrong with PP pointing out that as almost everything else can be done online these days, requests which do have to be carried out in branch, are literally the only reason why branches, with employees, still exist.

I think your HR is the unreasonable one in this scenario!

WalkingRunning · 09/11/2023 21:13

I like how she said we don't do that here whilst doing it for you. Sounds like a miserable mare

Jeannie88 · 09/11/2023 21:28

Not everyone uses apps and has printers at home and as a client you should have been treated with more respect. We use banks, we are clients, therefore when we need to use their services, same as any other walk of life. She was unnecessarily rude. In any profession, even when met with requests we see as unnecessary, which yours wasn't, we politely reply with of course, let me help you with that.

I would have printed the PDFs.

Why do you need to give a printout of your bank statement to HR in your new job. That is the strange part of your story, bank staff being rude is not unheard of.

Then you call customer services and ask them to post you a statement.

It literally states it takes 7-10 days to receive it. I didn’t know they would request that I come in in person with the documentation on a specific day that had a shorter timeframe.

My new job is in a different city. So no it’s not like I can just go in on a lunch break either.

Well seeing as I’m not HR or a partner in the company o don’t set the employee requirements strangely enough.

I have a problem with the staff member feeling the need to train a customer rather than the previous staff member who sent you to the wrong place .
I don't love being kindly lectured as if I actually worked there.

Yes she does sound unreasonable and had an attitude.

therealcookiemonster · 10/11/2023 01:05

not sure why so many comments are so adverserial against the op. they are not doing her a favour, it's a service she is entitled to. being polite is free and if that was not her job, she could have referred op to someone whose job it was! and back branches are there to help customers out not sneer at them.

Chlorinara · 10/11/2023 01:59

This does my head in. When I wanted to open bank accounts I stupidly went to branches of various banks in my nearby city to see what they had to offer, and mostly was met with "just go home and look up all the rates and details there" like I was an idiot. It seemed the people I thought might be in the business of trying to sell me their services were actually more like bouncers. I opened accounts at the one bank where someone actually engaged further with me.

Congrats on the new job OP.

Q2C4 · 10/11/2023 11:08

Retail bank staff are not well paid and are increasingly finding their support network is being eroded. For example, branch staff are often expected to clean the branch to cut costs.

The branch will be staffed to cover the minimum level of expected activity which will exclude anything which can be done by customers via an app or online.

I'm not excusing rudeness or can't do attitudes - just trying to provide some context.

Georgieporgie29 · 10/11/2023 11:47

Yes she was rude. No idea why pp’s are suggesting you bend over backwards to do this yourself to excuse her shitty attitude. It’s really not that difficult to print a copy of a statement off for her and as for them not being well paid, I would bet that they are better paid than the Asda checkout ladies and yet they don’t feel the need to be rude. Also I’m not well paid myself but am never rude to customers or clients so I fail to see the correlation there.

@Georgieporgie29 as a general matter retail bank staff are not well paid (Ie not much above NMW) given the complexity involved and regulatory nature of their job. Branches are not resourced to do tasks which can be done online/app.

If you want to blame someone for this, I'd blame the equity analysts who set unrealistic cost reduction targets for banks and bank senior management who try to meet those unrealistic targets in order to keep the bank share price from tanking.

Chardonnay73 · 10/11/2023 12:02

For certain industries eg NHS it has to be a bank statement from the last 3 months printed in branch or printed at home and taken into the bank to be stamped and verified as a proof of address. Thems the rules! Can’t produce the proof of address? You won’t be employed until you do.
OP the employee sounded rude and unprofessional.

If the bank staff don’t feel that they can do their job without being rude then maybe they should leave and go elsewhere. The only person I’m blaming for a bad attitude is the bank worker I’m not sure why I would blame other people for that. I mean it was literally printing a statement off.
