To think her attitude stunk?

Went into branch today to get a print of of my statement (needed for new job) and I got told to go to the desk.

Which I did and then the woman serving me was like “we don’t do that at this desk, I’ll do it for you just this time but next time just remember” “I was told to come to this desk?” “Like I said we don’t do it here, like can’t you just use your app and transfer it?”

There was a printer right next to her and she did print it off. I just don’t think such a simple request, needed so much attitude? Honestly her voice is full of annoyance.

I never understand why people who work in a bank are so keen to advise you to do things online or at the self service machines (especially when it’s quiet so not like there are big queues). Surely they’re doing themselves out of a job!

It's in their staff goals - it's what management have asked them to do, ie upskill customers on how to use the self service facilities.

I have a problem with the staff member feeling the need to train a customer rather than the previous staff member who sent you to the wrong place .
I don't love being kindly lectured as if I actually worked there.

This.

Got this recently at a hairdresser reception, with ‘as I said before’ and other passive aggressive comments, when actually I have said that I was actually specifically told to do the action their colleague.

Also, things are not as obvious just because the person that knows about it works there, eg. Didn’t you see the sign? Got it at a hotel recently, no it is the first time I have been here, so how would I know your convoluted processes are on a sign?

not sure why so many comments are so adverserial against the op. they are not doing her a favour, it's a service she is entitled to. being polite is free and if that was not her job, she could have referred op to someone whose job it was! and back branches are there to help customers out not sneer at them.

It's probably no-one's job because it can be done via the app.

Chardonnay73 · 10/11/2023 17:19

Not if it needs to be a verified copy it can’t be done by the app!!

Paperbagsaremine · 10/11/2023 17:24

I would have said, "oh no, please don't do it if you're not supposed to, I'll go back there and check where I am supposed to ask, I must have misunderstood"
...
admittedly to see if she was honestly just annoyed by Idiot Colleague Getting It Wrong Again (still should have been civil though!!!) or whether she was trying it on herself 😎

Ibravedaflood · 10/11/2023 17:26

I get paid by a cheque - small amount - regularly.. Use the deposit cheque route via my phone.. A great leap for me! This time apparently date wasn't that clear and a letter in the post told me I had to go into branch.. In branch the member of staff ushered me to a deposit atm. Tried to explain the scanner wasn't picking up the date. Some waffle about making sure customers can access all options.. The atm swallowed my cheque and I asked her if that meant it had accepted the cheque.. She wasn't sure but I would get a letter in the post if it wasn't! So back to bloody square one... If she had let me use a teller my money would def be available when I needed it... Instead it's still 50/50...

Nothing wrong with PP pointing out that as almost everything else can be done online these days, requests which do have to be carried out in branch, are literally the only reason why branches, with employees, still exist.

They need to remember that not everyone has iphones, access to apps or printers - I don't. I've lost count of the times I've been asked "Haven't you got a friend who could print it for you?" Yes I've got lots of friends thank you for asking but none of them have printers either.

Sweep3 · 12/11/2023 12:56

They are not doing themselves out of a job by not printing statements out etc.
because how it works is that the bank reviews what transactions could have been done at home, at a machine etc.
printing bank statements could be done at home or emailed as a PDF to wherever required therefore this transaction would be viewed this way, you are not saving anyone’s job by going in and doing something you could have done elsewhere.

that said op needed a statement, didn’t have a printer so it could have been done at either till without the rudeness or sending to another desk.

toomuchfaff · 12/11/2023 12:58

I'd be seriously questioning why a job wants to see my bank transactions. I'd have redacted that to death, cut off all but the top bit, like he'll you seeing my bank transactions! You ain't my mortgage provider assessing me for a loan!

CrazyCatLadyCat · 12/11/2023 13:25

Sounds very strange. Why on earth do you need to show HR your bank statements? I would be questioning it.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 12/11/2023 14:14

I’ve been in that situation before where someone at a business tells you info and then someone else tells you off for following it. It’s so frustrating and badly directed. They should be telling the staff member not to direct people to that desk.

Also, I had to have a bank statement printed at my bank and stamped which I couldn’t do at home. I think it was for proof of address for new employer so it’s something they must have to deal with.

Nothing to do with the OP at all.

This is why I've not gone paperless for bank statements, and won't until I am forced to.

Organisations who want proof of address or are doing financial checks are going to have to start accepting electronic or home printed copies eventually.

SalviaDivinorum · 12/11/2023 14:26

I'm just wondering what I'd have to do.

Since I was left high and dry, late at night in a dangerous US city location I no longer have a Lloyds account. My new account is one with no branches so I have no idea how I would verify a bank statement.

Proof of address is often needed for background checks in many companies (e.g. finance) not unusual

helpihaveateen · 12/11/2023 16:14

Good grief !!

for those that don’t know, employers like to see a physical bank statement as part of their identification procedures, it’s proof of address!
really it should have either arrived through the post, or be stamped by the bank in branch as a genuine copy.

takingstepss · 09/11/2023 23:01

Well seeing as I’m not HR or a partner in the company o don’t set the employee requirements strangely enough.

I had to do this too and get it stamped by the bank, they wouldn’t accept print outs from your phone/emails.

We can’t accept electronic or home printed copies because it’s too easy to alter them. We have to have a copy that has been posted to you or stamped in branch.

I haven’t been inside a branch for 5 years at least. I do everything through the app and get pdfs of my statement sent to me. I asked HR in the new company if I could forward that on to them and they said no it had to be a physical copy.

Yes, you're right. I work in pre employment checks for recruitment and for proof of address to accept a bank statement it generally has to stamped or say 'printed in branch on xxxx date' to show it's within the last 3 months. She was being an arse!!!

Have you never had to prove your address? Really?

OP yanbu I had the same issue recently - I work in a pharmacy and needed to apply for my NHS smart card and submit my Enhanced DBS check as I finally finished all my training and am fully qualified. Both of which required a combination of ID that contained name/dob/address/photo ... Each application required at least 3 documents. My passport and driving license covered all the required content but they also required a document such as a household bill, council tax statement or a bank statement. They had to be originals and if they were print outs they had to be stamped by the company/bank and dated within the last 3 months.

I am paperless with all my bills/bank statements and could not for the life of me find the council tax statement I received in April so decided the easiest one to get was a bank statement. Went into the branch, had to queue for 15 minutes at the desk in the entrance while someone wafter about with an iPad and tried to make people use the machines etc ... I asked for a paper statement and was told I could get statements on my online account or one of the machines and I had to explain it was for an identity check so I had to have a physical copy with stamp so she reluctantly sent me to the line to wait for counter service. I waited another 10 minutes before getting to the counter. I got as far as saying "Can I please get a printed statement ..." before I was cut off with a very dismissive tone and told "You can do that at the machine, you know?".

At which point I gave her my customer service look and continued with a firmer tone "As I was trying to explain before you interrupted me, I need an original copy but as I have set my accounts to paperless any printout needs to be done here as it needs to be stamped and dated." She went quiet then and glanced over at the customer next to me and was clearly embarrassed to see they were watching the whole thing.

She then grumbled to herself and refused to speak or look at me for the rest of the transaction, despite the fact that she was the one who caused the fuss by interrupting me and embarrassing herself by jumping in before I had a chance to finish my sentence.

I haven't stepped into an actual bank branch for about 10 years and if that's the standard of service you get when you go in nowadays then no wonder banks are closing branches left, right and centre!

NoEffingWay · 12/11/2023 23:23

For DBS applications you have to have an original copy, and this means that employers can't use printouts but can accept a branch verified statement which is where the branch prints and stamps the first page of the statement showing the persons name and address.

Some banks have banned this, which is massive pain all round. If you can have statements printed and posted to you, please do if you ever want to work in a health or public service job!
