Working on christmas day, the entitlement of others

Mysticcatmum · 08/11/2023 11:15

I have a job in a 111 NHS call centre, the office is open 24hrs 7 days a week. I have just been given my Christmas rota and to my delight I have been given off Xmas day (which I have worked previous years).

Now I have had an influx of colleagues who have children, asking me to cover their shifts since 'I have no children'.

So, my question is, AIBU for thinking that I do not (apprantly) deserve to have a christmas off with my family (who have had a rough year) all for the sake of those who have children, who have been off previous years?

Please stop responding to or quoting @Eggybrains everyone!
She is attention seeking, don't bite.

Good point and usually I ignore. I found the pp posts so comically ridiculous I couldn't resist. Then when that pp tags you back, asks you a specific question and says stop tagging me is rather ironic. I do hope the pp is able to stick to her answer and not be swayed or bullied.

I’m certainly not! They are extraordinarily entitled - they’re used to getting their own way because my boss panders to them, so they’ve become monsters. I’ve no interest in doing them a favour ever again!

Good for you!
Let the boss deal with the problem he/she has created…

I'm relying to you now because you've specifically asked me a question even though in the same post you asked people to stop quoting you. Odd but hey ho.

To answer your question at present I do not work in a job that needs weekend or over holidays cover (Easter, Xmas etc) I made the decision to change my career when I decided I would like (hoped to have) chn in the future.

Before this decision I worked in 3 different jobs where weekend and holiday working was part of the contract. So I guess, this is rough figures as quite a few years ago, around 100 ish people as colleagues over the 3 jobs.

Generally most people are fine and respectful, but I did come across, I think 5 if I remember correctly, that would not take no for an answer when asked to swap for Xmas and Easter at some points. I was a lot younger late teens and early 20s, I was told that I didn't need Xmas off as I was only going to see my parents and it didn't matter if we celebrated on the day or not. When I declined their request stating that I had worked the holidays previous years so would be taking that year off, as the rota stated they were not so nice, making things uncomfortable at work by talking about me behind my back saying I was selfish etc.

So to answer your question I have met enough to know that people like op colleagues do exist sadly. They are not the majority but they do exist and this does happen. I would say the frequency depends on the pool of colleagues you work with.

Your analogies of happens as often as someone murders their colleague is quite frankly ridiculous, can you not see the difference between murdering someone (quite the extreme occurance), to someone using their kids as a reason that should be able to cherry pick shifts?

This is obviously something you feel strangely passionate about, but surely you can at least imagine that it could happen more often that you have seen? And the fact that numerous other pp have confirmed they have themselves been in this position, you still seem to think everyone is lying. So again I don't think the op answering you directly will have any baring on your thoughts. You refuse to take others experiences into account and only base things on your experience. 🤷‍♀️

Wow, you say that I seem to think everyone is lying but also say I believe other people but not peoples interpretation of the OPs post. You can’t have it both ways.

I believe you. I don’t believe that loads of the OPs colleagues said “you need to work Christmas Day cos I have kids and you don’t”. Saying rarely things happen is not a stupid comparison. Someone might say they knew someone murdered by a colleague - I wouldn’t think it was untrue but I wouldn’t think it common.

my sample size of working places is substantially larger than yours. The attitude you describe is rare becuase I’ve never experienced or witnessed it. That doesn’t mean I don’t believe you or don’t believe it rarely happens. I think it very, very improbable lots of the OPs colleagues said “you need to work Christmas Day cos I have kids and you don’t”. And she didn’t say that, but that’s how it’s been interpreted - as she’s written it to try to be interpreted as such. If the OP suggested loads of her colleagues had been murdered in a round about way but not explicitly, I’d think it improbable and want clarification, but it’s not impossible and I’d believe her if clarified.

No questions for you, but please don’t tag or quote me unless the OP actually confirms what was said. But she won’t, for the reasons already given.

Sitting with in laws, sipping beer, occasionally checking this for extra entertainment.
Better than netflix drama😂

Teder · 18/11/2023 18:52

If I was the OP, I wouldn’t come back to a thread I posted 10 days ago to clarify to an egg brained poster who thinks I’m “misrepresenting”. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Especially when plenty of other posters have said similar things have happened in their workplaces. I doubt they are all “misrepresenting”. 🤣🤣

I didn't tag you. But I'm not claiming you're "strangely passionate" about this, which is as much BS as the other stuff you write. You just keep quoting and tagging me, so I get email notifications. That is a reason to respond, not passion.

If you don't want a response, don't write nonsense.

And loads of people said that this wouldn't happen at their workplace, and if it did the person would be shot down in flames. Cos people are not like this.

It's been looked at now, even though started 10 days ago, because it was in the press.

It's total bollocks to suggest that loads of people would say "you need to work my Christmas Day shift cos I have kids and you don't." There might be one dick in a work place of 100 who does this, but not loads as the OP was clearly suggesting. There may well be loads of people who ask for a swap, but this is normal practice in work places like this, but most people don't know this because they don't work in a job which requires Christmas Day cover.

🤣😂 this thread has made me laugh so much. As a pp said more drama than a Netflix show

Mikethewanderer · 18/11/2023 20:45

I did many years covering for people with kids, Christmas, new years, little johnny's birthday, little sally's sick day.and when I needed a specific day off because of issues always got sorry no..was much better when I said no..we all do our fair share. It was often framed "but you get paid more working this day.." correct response is " then you should take it, I have no kids to feed my bills are lower..I am happy to take the financial hit."
This person shouldn't feel bad, enjoy your day off or sell it to the highest bidder see who really wants to spend a day with their kids.

Ewock · 18/11/2023 19:36

I don't see the drama. But then again I work in a job where there are quite important things happening. Not a 9-5 M-F job where employees seem to think asking to swap a shift is outrageous (happens all the time in jobs where 24/7 cover required).

Given the amount of media coverage this thread has got I'm also wondering if the OP has not come back as been pulled up for presumably breaching social media policy. Bitching about colleagues, esp if misrepresented, would, I suspect, be against NHS 24 social media policy.

Teder · 18/11/2023 21:25

In my job that probably isn’t as important as Eggy’s, (who needs nurses anyway?) asking to swap doesn’t work anyway because we need a certain number of X professionals and a certain number of Y at level <number>. Regardless, we do get some people whinging they deserve it more because they have kids. More than half the team have kids!

Go and find yourself an actual Important job instead of wasting time on here!!!!!! < wags finger >

Ewock · 18/11/2023 21:29

Highly unlikely she has been pulled up by her employers as its anonymous and it could be a huge number of people posting. I also don't r a 9-5 job where "quite important things are happening" however I can also understand that different things happen to different people.

Posting identifying information would be an issue, posting on an anonymous forum not a problem. People need to vent, if this helps op and any posters then good on them for having a release. Not everyone has people they can turn to or talk to in real life.

You do seem to have a huge issue with the op, no idea why. And I hope things are ok for you as everyone should have somewhere they can speak.

So how did you miss that that specific poster does indeed work in a job requiring Christmas working?

I’m on a wind up? 🤣 Have you missed the last few pages? Now I know you haven’t been paying attention.

You keep "mis understanding". I think you are doing it on purpose.

Anyway what @Eggybrains said.

People don't work in jobs that require you to work some Christmases because they are all desperate to work Christmas.
People can ask to swap. Op can say no.
