To not cancel our wedding because DS has COVID

CheeseCrackers45 · 07/11/2023 13:28

Hi all. 1 year old son has had a bit of a cough for about a week. He's a bit tired but otherwise well. No fever, happily playing etc. Went to the GP today just in case it was another chest infection (he's already had several). Turns out he has COVID.

Here's the kicker... Me and DSs dad are due to get married on Thursday and DS is obviously attending 😅 We've taken tests and so far they are negative. My colleague is saying I'm being selfish by not cancelling the wedding. Me and my partner have decided to go ahead with it, but of course will be telling all guests that DS has COVID and letting them make their own decision about attending.

YANBU - no you shouldn't cancel
YABU - You should cancel

@Everanewbie

Would you make the CEV guests you do tell swear that they won’t tell anyone else?!

Differencesclear · 08/11/2023 16:44

On another thread @Everanewbie you say your husband is a doctor

really?

Everanewbie · 08/11/2023 16:30

@Differencesclear Because people get all hysterical when the C word is mentioned, and this hysteria still has the potential to derail OPs wedding day.

People being risk-averse and cautious aren't "hysterical." Covid is still 4x more deadly than flu. And has other lasting effects. https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/covid-19/covid-omicron-carries-4-times-risk-death-flu-new-data-show

Are you actually saying it's better for innocent people to be exposed to a high-risk virus than for the OP's wedding day to be disrupted?

COVID Omicron carries 4 times the risk of death as flu, new data show

Flu was tied to 7,851 deaths from week 33, 2022, to week 12, 2023, compared with 32,607 deaths tied to COVID-19.

Everanewbie · 08/11/2023 16:45

@Differencesclear good point. In retrospect, I'd just keep it to myself. Like I've said, he's likely not infectious any more, if he is it'll only be slightly infectious, and even then, its not worth getting your knickers in a twist over in a post quadruple boosted, post-omicron world.

Everanewbie · 08/11/2023 16:41

@BottleShipDown worldwide governments are downgrading it below flu, more emphasis is on flu vaccines this year than COVID. The certainty I can talk with is based on government hospital stats, and deaths plus the fact that I've had it 3 times, my husband has had it 3 times, my elderly parents twice, my in laws twice, and my great grandmother in law, aged 93 once. Zero deaths, zero admissions, 3 early nights, 2 packets of lemsip and 1 afternoon off work.

Are you able to quote any credible, objective sources to back up what you are saying?

Because my research is proving you to be dead wrong.

Yes, he is indeed. Who shares the same opinion. If you think Doctors are a large homogenous group that all cower at COVID you'd be very mistaken.

Well I’m very happy for you that your family are lucky enough not to get it too badly.

I know many people for whom the same isn’t true.

A poster above has posted evidence it’s 4x deadlier than flu.

My dad died of it earlier this year and I know people who have long covid and are massively impacted. Currently a friend has been bed bound for a week with it.

Until you provide robust evidence I’m not going to accept your 99.9% figure.

‘Cower’ at covid?? Or take reasonable infection control steps?

If COVID was such a threat, do you think the government would only offer the vaccine to over 65s, and not push it with anywhere near the same enthusiasm as before? Let me guess, evil tories etc etc.

You made read some scary article by indy-sage or something, but stats show that flu is now killing and hospitalising more than covid, and everyone I know, anecdotal, I know but range from 1 year olds to 93 year olds have experienced covid as a cold of varying severity. Some only knew they had it because of a line on a test strip.

It was bad for a while, statistically, some still get rough like the previous poster. But its not the killer you think it is, not at the start even, let alone now.

BottleShipDown · 08/11/2023 16:54

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/11/2023 16:09

I caught this ‘cold’ in July.

Been housebound and mainly bedbound ever since. Too weak to do anything.

No underlying health conditions. This was the second time l had it. There was no problem the first time.

I’ll lie in my bed and contemplate my ‘cold’ when l can’t even wash my hair and can stagger to the loo twice a day.

This ain’t no fucking cold. It’s a fucking insult to call it a cold. My world has never crashed down with a cold.

So sorry to hear this. That sucks. 💐

MrShady · 08/11/2023 16:54

@Everanewbie for me it's a non event anyway I guess as a wedding isn't something I could go to
I was more unwell with covid though than flu and having to get the anti virals while feeling awful was a pain

and you still wouldn’t tell them because you wouldn’t want them telling others?

Everanewbie · 08/11/2023 17:05

@BottleShipDown Weekly Flu and COVID-19 Report_w44 (publishing.service.gov.uk) at one point 7000 daily flu admissions. COVID peaking at c. 700 daily ICU admissions. Admittedly, the figures are not 'like-for like' but a disease with a peak ICU admittance, that falls of a cliff quickly, is not something that scares me.

I'd have a decent understanding, yes. But I'd be acting because of the hysteria that covid has, not because they need warning.

Sorry I’m not clear

So if someone is CEV and you knew it - you would not tell them because you’d worry they’d tell others?

ie you would decide what this person was and was not entitled to know to ensure they didn’t tell anyone else?

CharlotteBog · 08/11/2023 17:10

But its not the killer you think it is, not at the start even, let alone now.

Yeah, darn that World Health Organisation. What do they know?

Differencesclear · 08/11/2023 17:10

It is the prerogative of your guests to be “hysterical” about the risk. That is their prerogative. They are adults. Furnish them with them with the information but let them make the decision

thing47 · 08/11/2023 17:11

I'm just glad I don't know that poster in real life @Differencesclear, making decisions about other people's health on their behalf. How delightful.

I'm not sure myself. On balance I think I wouldn't tell anyone because they don't need to know that a 1 year old picked up one of the many mild respiratory viruses in circulation more than 2 weeks previous and that COVID isn't serious enough to warrant overshadowing my wedding over even if he were infectious, which he is unlikely to be by now. Apologies for the ambiguity.

Differencesclear · 08/11/2023 17:12

I got Covid. It was barely a sneeze

but my goodness - I wouldn’t ever think I know better than a guest re what information I should or should not keep from them regarding their health

Differencesclear · 08/11/2023 17:13

ok so you’re not sure.

We have made progress!

CheeseCrackers45 · 08/11/2023 17:14

Thanks all. Wedding is still going ahead tomorrow (eeek, nerves kicking in now! ). We have told everyone that DS has COVID and left the decision up to them. So far everyone has said they will still attend.

DS is okay in himself, just a bit tired and grumpy. But we do have someone on standby ready to take him back home after photos if he gets too grizzly. I understand why some people are suggesting just leaving him home with a babysitter, but we do have an older child as well (who is fine) who is obviously also attending and it feels a little unfair to have her there and not her brother, even though DS wouldn't know or care 😂

@CharlotteBog well, the WHO did, rather belatedly declare the emergency over in May 2023, quoting:

The WHO Director-General concurs with the advice offered by the Committee regarding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He determines that COVID-19 is now an established and ongoing health issue which no longer constitutes a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC).
